    Her rendition of Purcell's Dido's Lament is my favorite of all time. I've listened to this performance countless times. She was more than a beautiful voice. She embodied the works she sang with absolute emotional devotion and passion. She became the piece. RIP to one of the greats. ❤

    Thanks so much for your wonderful reaction to Jessye Norman and remembering her. For me, she was one of the greatest Operatic voices of all time. I do not feel that I am biased. There was something so ethereal and full bodied in her voice, how she interprested the music, and how she used her God-given gift in her performances. I really appreciate the wonderful thoughtful comments made by the both of you. She was one-of-a-kind, so splendid in her uniqueness.
    I, too, grew up in Augusta, Georgia. Jessye was 10 years older than me. We both attended Mt. Calvary Baptist Church and lived on Mill Street. My grandmother raised me and had to work every other Sunday. Jessye would escort me to Church every so often. We sang on the same choir and even as a small child, I recognized that Jessye's powerful distinctive voice stood out and was a gift. I remember looking up to her and feeling so delighted that I could walk with her to church because even then, the adults saw something uniquely special in her and held high hopes for her future. She was asked to sing on special occassions and often was the soloist in our choir.
    It was such a blessing to see/hear the tribute to Jessye Norman. She was such an extraordinary person who was very passionate about opera, the arts, civil rights, and human rights. Jessye was such an encourager. We grew up in a time when uplifting, encouraging, supporting, and preparing the next generation for excellence, success, and greatness was the norm, expected of us because the generation before us gave us that experience and we recognized the importance of carrying that legacy on.
    We are no longer living in a society predicated upon Jim Crow laws, segregation, and abject racism. Sadly, so many outside the world of Opera and opera lovers have no idea who she is and have never heard of her. She was a Trailblazer who began her career in Germany and Europe when she was offered an engagement and subsequently a three-year contract by the director of the Berlin Opera. Because of the abject racism here in America, there were many opera houses where she was not welcomed. Jessye loved working in smaller venues where she was able to have a more intimate experience with the audience. She traveled back and forth to the US and graced us with that extaordinar gift at diverse venues. However, it was not until she received great/wide acclaim in Europe that opera houses here in the US began to open their doors to her. She was strong, courageous, regal, and held onto her God-centered foundation which strenghtened her to face the many obstacles and adversities she had to endure, especially in the early years. Yet, she remained humble and gracious.
    My grandmother (who raised me) and I followed her career and applauded her many accomplishments and the regal dignity in which she carried herself.
    Thanks again again for sharing your thoughts and memories of Jessye with us.

    Saw her live once. Rather a strange piece by Schoenberg, Erwartung, a very Freudian piece with about a woman lost in a forest, she looks for her lover, but her lover is dead, did she kill her lover, and all that jazz. It's only about 25 minutes long, and that was the entire concert. Ms Norman sailed onto the stage in a billowing gown made out of gold lamé, looking like Cleopatra on her barge on the Nile. And she was compelling. You just couldn't look anywhere else. She doesn't move much, but she's totally invested in what she is singing. She's a real old school Diva, bathed in Charisma. And her sound is so full and powerful. Greatly missed, but a great legacy.
    She was a real trailblazer in her day. She first found fame in Europe, and as an African American, she took on great German opera roles in great, but notoriously conservative, German opera houses, singing roles in Wagner and Strauss, and other composers in the canon. She was also a fantastic lieder singer. Beim Schlafengehen is magical.

    I stumbled on to this very performance accidentally as a non opera fan and only watched as I had never seen a black opera singer before. I have now watched this performance once a week for years and I'm moved every time. Ms. Norman was a true one of a kind who made an opera fan out of me, I was deeply saddened to hear of her passing. May she RIP

    I've seen her perform and when she stood before you, your soul stood is anticipation as if you needed to be exhausted by her. And the tonic quality of her voice and as you say volume could and did confound the audio system where she could cause sound to fold into itself and create harmonics that were angelic. It was maddeningly blissful.

    Love reacting together as usual dear Jessye Norman was the 1st opera singer I connected to when I was a 8 years old. I remember listening to her recording at the #YoungTalent conservatory singing Purcell's Dido's lament. It was a revelation of a surprising and heartfelt new sound world. It was only when I was 24 years old and I got to sing Handel's #Cleopatra that I understood what poise, musicianship, relentless technique and inner strength she possessed.
    In the 1st interview with Norman that I've watched, she tells how she was exposed to opera for the 1st time when she got her own 1st radio transistor at 9 years old. It was the 1st time she could choose what to listen to without her brothers interfering. She was browsing the stations and came by an opera concert by chance. Luckily, the announcer described the meaning of the scenes, the clothing of the singers and the director's intentions so vividly that she didn't mind them singing in a foreign language. She said she was lucky not to be "taught to appreciate opera or to aspire to appreciate it". She just loved what she heard and wanted to sing like those singers on the radio.
    Norman's philanthropy is also something to be remembered, in 2003 she opened a school in #Augusta to provide a free fine arts education to disadvantaged children. Although suffering from a spine injury, she remained a positive influencer on the world's cultural scene and graceful till her last moments.
    As she sings here "Remember me, forget my fate". You will be remembered RIP 💗
    Together with my friend Linor Oren we reacted to her performance of this beautiful aria, what a way to say goodbye to this timeless voice and force of nature. You can notice we're totally transfixed in the 1st minute, and can't take our eyes off her during the rest of the video... But who would?

    • @axe7064
      @axe7064 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not rude. Your pointing out a fact, so let me explain why this happens to be. African / Caribbean peoples are spiritual. This spirituality is most apparent in our artistry particularly singing. Black performers of whatever genre have an ability of not just creating outstanding music but of connecting with every note and melody with a spiritual belief of a higher being. I don't mean Jesus or Christianity (although many would cite this) but the universe, creation. It's sub conscious. White Europeans do not have this spirituality which has been shown historically. Spirituality is in every fibre of us so those limitations which affect other artists are of no concern which is why black artists and black sports people excel in these areas. This is never discussed or mentioned in the black community . We just know this. Also Jessye sings from the black experience of slavery, from generations of pain, sorrow , trauma is in her genetic make-up which is why Miss Norman connected with her works so magnificently. She was also an extremely intelligent , disciplined artist. But please remember Jessye Norman had to be this good to get recognition when other less talented white sopranos were being acclaimed before her

    Thanks for this great reaction/analysis to surely one of the greatest voices ever among us. Norman's "Habanera", under Ozawa, is one of my favorite interpretations. I don't know if it was her choice or his, but the tempo is slowed, and she deliciously enunciates every single letter.
    I have to say though, my favorite complete performance is the 1980 "Spirituals in Concert," along with Kathleen Battle. Norman is in top voice throughout the entire performance and one of the reviews I read said to be in Carnegie Hall that evening was to be "among heavenly angels, electrifying the entire hall."
    A great example of her near perfect technique is "Give Me Jesus," during the latter half of which she does what I always associate with her singing, the dropped, slightly pulled back jaw you mentioned in this video, along with sort of a tongue/soft palate thrust at the beginning of a phrase. Being a layperson, I have no clue what that's for, but I always think of it as a "vocal reset." Would be interested to hear if you thought that was some technique she adopted over the years, or just an idiosyncrasy to her own style.
    Also, I agree she is THE Aida for me. Price's has its own merits, but Norman's richer, cavernous, velvety timbre to me typify the role more so than Price's somewhat lighter delivery.

    Opera singers should not attempt Dido's Lament. This is supposed to be a woman dying in the arms of her friend. It isn't a contest to see if you can be heard three streets away. If you want to hear it done sympathetically, listen to Alison Moyet's version. You will have to forgive some of her east London pronunciation, but appreciate the quality.

    • @TheDealvin
      @TheDealvin 3 ปีที่แล้ว
