Probably a bit late in the answer, but no. Plex is mostly a media metadata service... but it grew to the point that it actually has its own free ad supported streaming service. It is especially powerful if you have your own movies/TV shows/ music on your own computer or NAS. It will automatically fill in all the details of your movie in its interface. You get most of the service for free, but there are some advanced features that the plex pass makes sense, eg if you have a home media server/NAS.

As someone who has used Plex for it's original use case for years it's unfortunate to see them push into this new direction of streaming.
Been using Plex for about eight years with a lifetime pass. I like the one stop shop for streaming as well has housing my own media.
Sorry, but why am I paying them a monthly fee for? Is it simply to not have to search what I want to watch?

sadly soon I will one day stop using TH-cam. Too many ads makes TH-camrs lose Subscribe. Is a matter of time.
