Fun to see you use one of these, I enjoy mobile phone macro even more than with my DSLR. You did great with that little lens, the lens distortion is not as bad with the more expensive mobile macro lenses like Moment Lens, Olloclip and Rhinoshield. Excited to see you do more of these :D
@@StewartWoodArt, Whatever you do, don't get an iPhone XS Max! I have one and it is a challenge to do mobile phone macro with it, because it has horrible chromatic aberration in certain lighting conditions. An older iPhone would be better. I'm considering the OnePlus 7 Pro after seeing their amazing video on it - wayyy cheaper than an iPhone too LOL
I'm into botany, and being able to take good macro shots of small structures can be really important if I want to identify the plant at a later date. One thing I've found works surprisingly well is just holding a jewelers loupe/hand lens directly up to my phone camera. The lens I use is just a cheap triplet 10x-21mm that I paid about $15 for. You also have the added benefit of being able to use the lens independently of a camera, although it is at the expense of not being as easy to use with the camera.
You have to use the lens which is without hood as 12x and both lenses for 24x. Using the only top lens with hood for 12x will not work as it is not the actual 12x use lens.
I'm using mobile macro more and more and it's lots of fun tbh and yes less stares when out and about, easy to whip it out anytime. Great results on the Pixel 3a. Yes working distance is tough and better for still subjects. Great vid, look fwd to more testing. From a fellow Brummie macro photographer
This is very useful, considering I'm taking photography for GCSEs, this would be amazing for my macro photography, I would not spend £800+ on a special lens for a DSLR camera, so definitely buying that lens ;)
Thanks for this, I like to take close upimages of the old coins I find metal detecting, I am thinking I should buy a more expensive smartphone macro lens? ATB MMMD
I'm seeing quite a bit of accounts on IG that advertise these mobile lens. The pictures look amazingly sharp and perfect. Is it safe to say they are scams? Or is such sharp quality possible with a clip on mobile macro lens?
I have just purchased what’s marketed as an Apexel 12/24 attachment. There is terrible distortion, it’s pincushion distortion on the edges. As I bought it to copy some slides as a quick cheap way of having the images available for use from my phone, it’s proven to be a bit useless! The other thing you point out is the close working distance, and, so, for use with a copy stand system that is also a bit problematic as the light box will have to be raised up. Keeping it stable and parallel then becomes another problem to fix. I’m wishing I had bought the Lomography kit from a proper shop. Finally, the vignetting is a problem, especially on the 24x. I’m not sure that my Apexel is not a cheap copy but it seems that the problems are there even with a genuine item. It’s so cheap- £12- that it’s hardly worth getting a refund but I am not happy to have another bit of junk kit! Suggestion for future reviews on items like this- start it with a quick technical test for barrel/pincushion distortion, working distances, vignetting. I suspect this attachment is probably also not that useful for insect macro etc. photography unless the subject is not moving as the focus field is wafer slim and there is no way of increasing the depth of field as with a nice old fashioned camera and lens. This clip on is also fiddly to use, if you knock it the vignette cuts into the frame. As I said with the 24x, the vignette is unavoidable. It’s a problem Apexel could have avoided by making the diameter of the lens parts about 5mm wider. If you have read my quickie review here and want to see my work- check out Sound Reasoning on my Big Cartel. Maybe I should use the two phone clamps I ended up with (long story) and this sub optimal attachment to start doing practical reviews here. There really is no need for a lengthy video with this kit. We just need to know what defects and limitations there are.
I bought that exact lens and found that any photos with the lens hood were totally unusable. I think the lens hood is causing most of that distortion. Like you said 24x was difficult to get anything because there's virtually no working distance. I took off the top lens and used only the 12x underneath. Without the hood, and there isn't a lip on that lens. I got some gorgeous photos with my google pixel 1 phone the first time out.
@@StewartWoodArt thats a good idea. Id hate for people to give up. Try that lens one more time, with just the bare 12x (the one on the bottom) I bet you get great photos! I was looking for an app that would focus a macro lens. The moment lens and moment pro app look like they do that. I didnt want to spend that much on a lens, especially my first macro. But I would buy the app if it works with a cheap lens.
@@StewartWoodArtbased on instructions I saw, you used the wrong one for 12x (top one with white cover). Smaller bottom one alone is for 12x quality photos, only for 24x screw that top one.
hi Stewart, another interesting video. But as i only have an old i5 and really only use it to see if the trains are running ok i probably will not be going down the phone macro route, especially as i have the Canon 100mm Macro Lens so i will be sticking with that. However here is a challenge for you, when you go out and do another outdoors shoot with the DSLR why not drop a few of the phone images into your presentation and see if we can spot them from your main shots? Cheers Erich
hello mate i have a question i bought the apexel 24X macro lens and i have a P30 pro phone should the attachment be infront of the wide angel lens or the middle lens and should i use the macro lens option in the phone?
I just got the Moment macro lens (on Liesl's recommendation) and its taken a lot of getting used to (using it on a iphone 7 compared to normally shooting on a relatively high end DSLR) - the biggest issues for me have been the dramatically narrow depth of field and camera shake. Solving the latter will come with practice holding the phone and activating the shutter and the way you go about setting the camera up during the picture taking process. However, I'm using the camera app within Lightroom Mobile and you can set it to manual focus and trigger focus peaking which is really useful for gauging where the focus point is (the Moment app also has it but is not free) - I preset the manual focus to 100% and then bring the lens to the subject using the focus peak haze to judge where the plane of focus is. The images do have some distortion, possibly not as much as those you in the video, but imho that adds to the art of the pics and is something you learn to use to include and enhance the images.

Hi Stewart. Thanks for this presentation. I enjoyed it especially that much of my photography of more recent times is being done with smartphones. After all, what is the best camera? The one you have with you (in my shirt pocket) when you want to take a photo. I can see the convenience of having a macro lens like this for a smartphone when you don't want to carry around larger, heavier equipment. What do you do with a single macro lens like this when you want to use with more recent smartphones equipped with dual, triple, quad lenses (and even five) lenses? How would you know which lens to place it over? Is that even doable with multi-lens-equipped smartphones and blocking other lenses? You take something specifically, like Huawei's newest P30 Pro, which has a periscope zoom giving you 5X optical zoom, 10x hybrid zoom. Would such a macro lens even work? Sorry if I make my inquiry a bit confusing, but, I think you get the point. An ancient iPhone with a single lens camera is easy to understand. But I've long since jumped ship from Apple, and single lens smartphone cameras are no longer in vogue. Specifically I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 9 with intention to eventually getting the Huawei Mate 30 Pro when it is announced in October. BTW, would you have any lens recommendation for my Note 9? Thanks.
