One of the best radios I ever had was a nice Panasonic boombox I bought for around $100.00 back in the 1980s. Sadly it was destroyed in a car accident. It was a top notch radio receiver. I remember being amazed at how high quality it was on both AM and FM.
I remember stores selling these brand new back in the mid to late 80s...BEST Catalog stores! This was when Panasonic made some fantastic portable SW radios...most had PLL by now that were digital...the quality of that time was incredible...they were made to last almost forever. Also Made In Japan.
Speaking of radio, the man who penned the lyrics to the song "The Spirit Of The Radio", Neil Peart, the amazing drummer of the band Rush, has died. He was like Superman to us drummers... Begin the day With a friendly voice A companion, unobtrusive Plays the song that’s so elusive And the magic music makes your morning mood Off on your way Hit the open road There is magic at your fingers For the Spirit ever lingers Undemanding contact In your happy solitude. Invisible airwaves Crackle with life Bright antennae bristle With the energy Emotional feedback On a timeless wavelength Bearing a gift beyond price - Almost free… All this machinery Making modern music Can still be open-hearted Not so coldly charted It’s really just a question Of your honesty One likes to believe In the freedom of music But glittering prizes And endless compromises Shatter the illusion Of integrity “For the words of the profits, Are written on the studio wall, Concert hall - Echoes with the sounds… Of salesmen.”
A very fine example of a very Rare Radio, it's an Excellent find Todd! Can it take Rechargeable Batteries? Have you tried a simple "Lazy Susan"? Most often used in the Kitchen, or serving food. It might serve your purpose for an inexpensive Turntable. You know, I hope that you are taking some Photographic images (at least 8"x10") of these radios, because you could make quite an interesting Leather-bound Portfolio for yourself!
@JOE PRETE It's ironic it's a "rare radio" today but when I was a kid back in the mid-late 80s these things were literally available by the pallet at catalog merchandise stores like BEST, and Service Merchandise! That being said when you bought one of these Panasonic, Sony, or Toshiba competitive models you were getting fantastic quality products Made In Japan at fair (not cheap) prices the quality of such things back then you had to actually witness it was so darn good, even most of the mid tier items from the big Japanese brands were outstanding....We'll never see that quality again in our lifetimes. Command Series was a popular line of affordable multiband radios both portable and tabletop that were good quality at slightly higher than mid tier prices and most of them were well worth it, especially units like the legendary Panasonic RF-2200, RF-4900, ,RF-2900, RF-B60 and RF-B600.
I have an instagram account, you can find it on my Channel Header. Can you give me a line on a whisper quiet Lazy Susan? I have tried a few and they are noisy. They make grinding/scratching noises when turning the radio.
@@watershed44 there was a time...a long long time ago the perception was if it's made in the USA is was quality... otherwise it was cheap Japanese junk. Interesting how far we have lowered the bar.
@Two Hands Are you the same guy as "Two Hands and a Radio"? That's true, when the USA and German made electronics they were excellent and Japanese stuff was middling at best. Then our country literally gave up competing and handed a lot of manufacturing over to the Japanese who with OUR expertise and technology of course made great products. Most of the root ability to produce high tech and high quality came from the USA and Europe.

Nice classic
Thank you Arnold, it is enjoyable to tune the bands with.
Microwave oven ring turntable with guide rollers. Works well for a turntable. Place them both in a round serving tray. Voila, 73.

Begin the day
With a friendly voice
A companion, unobtrusive
Plays the song that’s so elusive
And the magic music makes your morning mood
Off on your way
Hit the open road
There is magic at your fingers
For the Spirit ever lingers
Undemanding contact
In your happy solitude.
Invisible airwaves
Crackle with life
Bright antennae bristle
With the energy
Emotional feedback
On a timeless wavelength
Bearing a gift beyond price -
Almost free…
All this machinery
Making modern music
Can still be open-hearted
Not so coldly charted
It’s really just a question
Of your honesty
One likes to believe
In the freedom of music
But glittering prizes
And endless compromises
Shatter the illusion
Of integrity
“For the words of the profits,
Are written on the studio wall,
Concert hall -
Echoes with the sounds…
Of salesmen.”
