I’m really loving Pale Waves! I feel like the creepy old dude being in my late 30’s digging this group, but they are really talented. Ciara and Charlie are a fantastic rhythm section! Hugo adds great ambience and melody with his guitar, complimenting Heather’s chord work. And the song writing? Really great stuff!!
I was walking the streets of San Francisco one night and came across this club called The Chapel and Pale Waves was the headliner (had no idea who they were) and they were incredible!

Everyone's on fire on this one. Heather's mastered and gotten more confident in her moves from Heavenly. Ciara rocking that classic headbang. The boys are dancing as if they're floating. Dat bass move. Dat guitar shoulder wave. Pure bliss!
They clearly are being propped up by outside influences because they have the same songs over and over again. At least bands like Fickle Friends, Kitten, HAIM, Now, Now, know how to write music and change up their style yet still keep an identity that isn't bland in their look and their sound which Pale Waves is having a hard time doing. Literally might as well be a Brithday Party Cure Tribute band.

I don't care how derivative this band may be. They clearly have good taste and chose their influences well. I hear everything I love about 80's alternative bands in this music with a modern twist, and it is endlessly satisfying. The hooks are never-ending, and they sink deep. I know producers can have a huge influence over recorded material, but MMMN is still a surprisingly good first album, even if it shamelessly recycles its own melodies. They're great melodies! This song and video in particular are pop rock perfection. I mean, how do you top this sound, performance, and aesthetic? Derivative? Sure. Still new and exciting? Yes!!! Can't wait to see what this band does after Who Am I? (Which I have to admit, felt a bit underwhelming, but then again I'm not keyed into the Avril Lavigne-type influences).
