Dude, that last couple of turns by John were amazing! pure genious and knowing how to play the game, only ruined by that Lysandre top deck of Alex (kudos to him). I remember thinking "why are you playing Vileplume with two revitilezers in hand" and it was because he knew Alex was going to get that Vileplume. I hope to see John playing in Worlds!
I'm not sure what it is about the TCG, but it feels very formulaic and relying heavily on luck. The only strategy seems to come in the deck building stage, followed by lengthy card pulling turns trying to complete the deck's flowchart.
TCGs are luck and skill based. A perfect information game, such as, chess, has no luck but at higher levels it really requires memorisation to win - which is not fun IMO.
dietsodadude the luck comes from the coin flipping and drawing cards but the skill comes form building a good deck and playing the cards in your hand wisely
Things didn't used to be this way as much. Unfortunately there isn't a lot of footage of older games but the 2009-2010 were some of the most skill based and fun card game formats I've ever played in.

Waheed Abdullah Yeah, I used to call it RayQUAza, but I realized how it was really pronounced and started calling it Rayquaza. It sounds much better like that.
In the first game the commentators said John didn't use the Feather Arrow ability and said it might have been a mistake. I had to rewind it a little because I heard him say something about Feather Arrow. He couldn't use it because of Hex Maniac. They said later that he searched it out but didn't play it. I didn't want to rewind it even more again but I'm pretty sure he did play it because that's why he didn't play Hoopa Ex on that turn. If he hadn't used Hex Maniac he couldn't have even played that item card to search for Hoopa. And I wasn't even watching that close.
It's kinda ridiculous how the commentators were really unclear about Wilson's Hex Maniac preventing Kettler's Feather Arrow for a turn in the first match...
Echizen Ryouma you can run budget decks that uses other draw supports like octillery and now oranguru. and if you did want to run shaymins, running one is very manageable though two is preferred in most decks
I thought you couldn't evolve pokemon on the first turn? And furthermore, I thought you could only evolve pokemon once per turn per pokemon? How did he get a Rowlet to a Decidueye on the same turn? Is there a stadium card in play allowing this or are there new rules?
Compared to Yugioh where Zoo and Dracos are the only decks used in top 32 currently because the Power Creep is ridiculous. Pokemon is pretty unique with how there are different top decks. Last year the WCS for Pokemon it was a Greninja vs Audino Mega EX. Here in this Regional we got Decidueye/ Vileplume vs Mega Rayquaza. I think I even saw a Lapras deck topped in some other regional. WAY more varied meta in pokemon than Yugioh. Still like Yugioh though but Pokemon is fun to play to get a break from the Yugioh OTK. Also Pokemon is way easier on my wallet.

(accidentally deleted previous comment when trying to edit, ugh) It seems like most of these decks are designed with huge numbers of cards that sac cards to search for the small sliver of your deck that initiates your winning setup, and the rest is just there to keep you from losing until that happens. I just hate the idea that there is so much searching your deck for cards in this game. It makes deck construction so weird and it makes for REALLY boring opponents turns.
From your terminology it seems like you play magic? I can definitely see where youre coming from. The last 2 years has been a sprinting contest in regards to just sacing and playing, but it didnt used to be like this. Another deck thats quickly rising through the ranks right now is called water box which is comprised of lapras and a few other water tech cards. I wont bore you with the details but it definitely is alot slower. Also, like i think i mentioned before. We're losing a handful of MASSIVE staple cards that have made the format so fast and have dominated the last 2 years.
Congrats to the finalists. I played John at a local tournament, loved watching him squirm in his seat as the battles started to leave his favor. John is just too grabby with opponents cards, did you see how often he goes for that discard, looks through, sets it down, looks through again right after. But what really rubbed me the wrong way is John also tries to give out competitive advice to casual players when it is not asked for, like dont be that person. I am happy with the outcome of the finals.
Hey, Anju! That's a shame you feel that way, but Alex and I already had an agreement before the game even started to just grab each others' cards whenever we needed to. Saves time when every second counts.

Jeremiah Bachmann It's quite easy when you've been playing for a bit. You get used to following fast plays, the same applies to all TCGs
Play the game yourself, then its pretty easy to know whats happening.
Or try pausing whenever a card is mention to look it up and see what it does.
