    Once you become more comfortable with polyrhythms and odd time signatures, it becomes second nature to groove out to them. Just gotta react to more bands like this!

    Should've went with the drum playthrough instead. But at least someone is listening to Leprous.

    Everyone else reacts to 'Slave' live....a lot of Leprous takes a few listens to learn the songs but the payoff is worth it when you learn and expect the transitions. Leprous described themselves as 'Avante Garde' music, but it's standard prog to everyone else.

      @animal1439 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd maybe consider Coal to have some Avante Garde moments (particularly on Contaminate Me), but I'd usually classify Leprous as either Prog or Art rock, or in the case of Castaway Angels and Pitfalls, Prog-Pop-Rock?

    This music isn't for the casual listener. U really need to be in to it. Its really for progressive musicians and people who really love progressive music. Odd time. Weird beats.

    I think its often unfair to judge an odd metered tune off of traditional grooves most Americans may be accustomed to like 4/4 or 3/4. There are plenty of cultures (like India's music) where they've figured out how to dance to really odd metered music. I often think of it as long and short pulses. So in the case of this song which is in 11/4 I'd segment it into 3+3+3+2, or Long-Long-Long-Short. I mean yeah, you have to think about it, but if you internalize that pulse you'll find that the whole song pretty much "grooves" that way and you can immerse yourself in it. Prog is often all about experimenting with uncommon musical techniques in an effort to break new ground, so the more often you see bands using that exact rhythm pulse (long-long-long-short) the more you'll see people being able to dance to that kind of music. I think a band that does this best is "King Gizzard and the Wizard Lizard" because they're often playing songs that are just increasing in Odd meters and they're clearly segmented in a way that's easy to follow, like 7/8, 9/8, 11/8, 13/8 etc. If you're interested in checking that out, I really like the Altered Beast/Altered Beast movement of songs because each new iteration moves up the time signature scale and becomes increasingly complex :)

    Love Leprous and this song, but didn’t love this reaction. It’s prog. You’re not going to feel a beat. Prog bands often throw you off on purpose. It keeps you paying attention. It’s unusual in a different way than Jinjer.
