Does anyone knows why the bar (cartridge) of an underwood Champion doesn't advance? The little hammers hang in the air (halfway) and the bar doesn't want to move when I click a letter...
What would happen if you don’t have the little metal parts for the margin selector? Have one coming to me but not sure if it has the little metal parts you showed
Well if you’re talking about the little U-shaped clips, i think those are primarily for setting tabs...its been so long i don’t even remember. But it would still be perfect usable, you would just need to manually indent paragraphs/margins-eyeballing it every time the carriage returns. If you’ve already decided to work on one of these older machines, its not much of an inconvenience
I have a 1936 Corona Standard which is the best of the 3 I have, no tabulator, you can get by without it. If you need tab stops just note where you would want them on the scale and move the carriage there. It’s just a bit slower.
Ummmmm gosh I honestly can’t remember! I know some typewriters have that feature (I think it’s intended to keep the mechanism safe during travel) but I can’t say for sure whether this one had it or not!
I have a 1936 Underwood Champion. Do you have any problems with the margin release button? When I press the margin release, it releases both the left and right margins. When I push the carriage to the right for a new line, the carriage will travel too far, practically to the left end of the platen. If I manually reset the margin release in the back of the carriage, then both left and right margins are re-established. The margin release does not reset after I have pressed it. Thanks..
Sorry I don’t even think I ever messed with it. It was in such pristine condition. And it’s gone now so I can’t really help at this point. The carriage is a tricky thing on these old machines though ...
When you open up the ribbon cover, i think its stamped onto the carriage rail…sometimes you need a flashlight to look around and find it. Been a while since I looked at one of these. My memory might be incorrect…
