Awesome video man, I needed to see this. I used to record just like this (generic beat, record guitars, set up drums, hit record, run to kit, play bass, vocals...) but then I decided to upgrade to a whole bunch of fancy equipment... Now I've been feeling like I can't record unless I have this new piece of gear that will make things easier, my mics are terrible, etc etc...
This was great to see to remind me how easy it should be. The only thing I want to do to improve on what you've shown us here is setting up a TouchOSC server over wi-fi so I can trigger recording while sitting behind the drums... or even just a midi controller with a long USB cable, hitting record then sprinting to the drumkit always kills my timing. Looking forward to checking out your other vids, great work!

thanks for the insights. i always find it very interesting to see how other musicians record their stuff.
it's kind of funny how similar your way and my way of recording are, even though my music is miles away from being black metal. just shows again how related different styles of metal (or harder styles of rock in general) really are, which is something i tend to forget when i'm just listening to music for the joy of it.
for what you've said about Spotify/iTunes at the end:
you would need to pay some sort of digital music distribution service (for example DistroKid, TuneCore or CD Baby) to put your music on these streaming platforms.

Very interesting, love your music and it's very cool to see the similarities and differences between your techniques and mine. A lot of what I do is very very similar; but one big difference that stood out to me was the DI box. I usually record everything straight into the interface. How would you say using a DI box compares to not using one?
I struggle to see how adding something else between the guitar and interface can make the signal clearer, but I'm probably missing something. Would you recommend I get one, and if so, which one?

    • @zimorog

If I set up a cheap vox amp with a distortion pedal would the mic placement be good if I took the mic to the bottom of the atlantic ocean and put a pillow over it? I also was planning on putting my vocal mic on the other side of the planet too. Please let me know if this is a good technique. 😊
