MXR Distortion + vs Boss DS-1 vs Proco Rat II

  • Which do you prefer?
    A comparison between what I call the first-generation true hard-clipping distortion pedals that came out in the 70s. Before then, there were only fuzz pedals.
    I'm using my Stratocaster plugged into my MXR Distortion +, Boss DS-1, and Proco Rat II into my Fender Champion 600. Enjoy!

    I like how he taped the controls on the Boss so you couldn't see the levels.

      I’m guessing that’s how he’s saving his favorite settings on that pedal?

    I think I like the MXR the best. The other two were also phenomenal but they felt a bit wetter and less bright. I’d definitely go with the rat if I need something to bridge the gap between fuzz and distortion though.

    I personally thought the RAT sounded the best in this video, full sounding and smooth. But, I guess it depends on your application and preference. Thanks for the video.

    • @commandhtf
      @commandhtf  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Same. I very much prefer the Proco Rat for most of my applications. Very full sounding with lots of mids and enough bite.
      I have a video demonstrating all of the Proco Rat's capabilities including overdrive, heavy distortion, and fuzz. Thanks for watching!

    Great comparison video mate.
    On the MXR: someone commented on Rowland S Howard having used one, but I believe he only used one box for the bulk of his career - an MXR Blue Box, and apparently a temperamental one at that. His signature sound came out of Jaguar x Blue Box x reverb x volume x not being a gearhead Not that there's anything wrong with being a GH 😊.
    Also, for a milestone example of MXR Distortion+, refer to Australian band The Saints debut album, (I'm) Stranded (1976) - particularly the one-two punch of Demolition Girl/Nights In Venice. Guitarist Ed Kuepper fed his SG through an early Distortion+ into (I think) a bass amp. He also tuned up 2 semitones.

      He ran both a Blue Box and a Distortion+, he even had a signature pedal by Reuss that was based around a Distortion+ and a Blue Box in one pedal, though I believe that was built post mortem.

    Something not talked about much is how each pedal flavored or changed the clean tones. I have both the DS-1 and the Rat and I used to play exclusively with the MXR Distortion +. I find that both the DS-1 and the Distortion + flavored my clean signal far less than the Rat. While I recommend all three pedals, you may have to adjust your amp settings when playing with the Rat if you have a particular clean sound in mind.

    In this vid the mxr sounded better, some vids it doesn't. I have been using the boss since it came out but always have had to boost it with overdrive pedal after it to get the crunch I need when I play classic rock. But the mxr sounded great. Boss and mxr have always been my favorite pedals. When I play metal it's either the mxr fullbore metal or boss metal zone. Been playing since 1980....\m/

    Good choice to compare these 3 monuments. I ordered a ds1. The compromis between midscoop- clarity and warmth fits my needs the best I think. I already have a ds2 wich is too fat sounding. The Rat : the distortion sound in itself is really special. But I would like the dirty Rat wich has more highs and sustain.You can use all three of these pedals. An mxr to make this dry husker du white noise ? , i wouldnt say no.

      @@diegopalominoss I ended up selling the Distortion+, simply because I was afraid of being the one to break it, it was killer though, it cleaned up very well when riding the volume knob. • @stevefierz4166
    @stevefierz4166 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    You've gotta have the output higher on the MXR to get a decent sound. In addition, all these pedals sound better in front of an already driven gain channel of a tube amp.

    • @commandhtf
      @commandhtf  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You also gotta balance the thin sound of the MXR as you begin to max the gain though. The MXR cuts of a bit of bass as you increase the gain.

  • @ggman946
    @ggman946 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    MXR is the most open transparent of the bunch. DS1 sounded scooped, bassy and brittle on top end . couldn't wait for you to stop playing it. The RAT sounds good, but it's tight and compressed as compared to the MXR. That appeals to some people, but the casing is big, boxy and takes up space. Imo, the win goes to the MXR.

    So I just built a mxr, and made one mod that was really awesome. I put in a switch that changed out the 47nf capacitor for a 220nf cap and it takes it from the thin but clear bit to having a fuller bodied sound that's closer to what you achieve with the rat in your sample. Just a fun mod idea for the folks mulling over what they like more.

      The DS-1 is almost never used properly. It was designed to boost an already overdriven Marshal style amp with boosted mids. Put the Tone anywhere over 11 o’clock and the DS-1 is basically unusable, far to much treble fizz. Distortion around or just over halfway is the sweet spot for me.
      Works best with darker bridge pickups in my experience. I run mine into the front of my SansAmp which is set to a slightly broken up Marshal style sound. Best sound I’ve got out of it so far.

    Good video, I like the rat..but I honestly believe, with all the pedals available in the world, we should be trying to use other pedals besides these three. The Greeks philosopher Platos 500 BC. If you see a guitar, even a guitar so weird, it blows your mind. You will know it's a guitar because you are already familiar with the perfect form of the guitar. My pedal board doesn't contain any of these brands. I am hearing impaired and I really don't care if I have a Joyo vintage overdrive pedal or a tube screamer. They sound identical when you are profoundly deaf. Being 100% in tune is not even necessary unless someone else is listening. I have been playing and singing for over 30 years and I have been going busking for nearly 20 years. I have always had hearing difficulties but I lost most of my hearing mid 20s. A guitar is a piece of wood with strings on....not a trophy.
