One man's opinion here: I've never liked the whole numbering-of-stanzas thing in spoken word. Unless views and positions are REALLY different between stanzas, or the list is used as a prominent device, OK. But here, every stanza relates to the last, so why break it up with numbers? Why not just write a transitional line-or-two? Like, between 2 and 3, where Aunt Diana is announced dead, then recalling to when the Aunt teaches her how to fish... like do you really need to break that up? Son can't just write a line like, "I am suddenly reminded..."
1 Poet 1 Line it's called a list poem bc it allows you to just make a list and doesn't require everything to connect to everything else. it also lets you take a step away from the content, which makes writing pieces like this one a lot easier. sometimes the number holds some significance to the poem (like in 21 by Patrick Roche) and sometimes numbers or items are repeated to add weight or convey importance etc. ((idk if this was helpful at all but i hope it was))
Thanks for the reply; I am well aware of what list poems are in both the written and spoken word context, and I'm just not a fan of them. They make poems sound like buzzfeed lists to me. They can be done well sometimes, but for my personal preference, I'd just avoid the format because it seldom benefits a piece.
I love this poet. The tremble in her voice always pulls me right in. I cannot wait to see what she does next.
Wait, pull the petal from the stem, her hair is dandelion, does she have trichotillomania?
I think so. She said it in another poem.
What's the meaning behind this poem?
