  • In this adventure Redbeard shares tips and tricks he's learned for motorcycle touring.
    I want to help other people who may be intimidated with riding long distances. Whatever a long distance is to you. I've done a good amount of touring on both Sonus (my 2015 Honda CBR300R) and Woodstock (my Honda Goldwing GL1800).

      @@AdventureswithRedbeard Yes. If I added all my miles together, it would equal 15 times around the world. I'm coming up on 16 times. Not making that a goal at all, I just like to ride. Outside being with family, I'm closest to God when I ride. I've ridden 5 countries and all 9 Canadian provinces and 44 states. My longest ride was 24K miles and 7 weeks long. But as I listened to your video, you made more sense than the many others I've listened to. I'm glad you faired well with your bout with cancer. A very life changing experience for anyone who goes through it and survives. God was with you.

    I appreciate your warm and relaxed delivery of your video(s). Long-distance riding is my passion and I can’t wait to do more of it when I retire next summer. I have gone coast to coast several times on my old Harley but now that I am new to the Wing family. I can’t hardly wait. I bought the Wing in June and have put almost 5k miles just getting on and going. My favorite trips are the unplanned backroad routes that I only plan on how many nights out. I do pick a state and go leisurely exploring. Butler maps are my friend.

    Love long distance riding. You are definitely correct about building up to a long ride. When I can do 650 miles in a day I know I’m ready for my trip. Just got back from a 5400+ mile trip from Florida to the north tip of Maine over to Milwaukee and back to Florida. 13 days of wonderful riding. Stay safe maybe we’ll meet on the road.

    I’m 66 years old and have been riding all my life, I always wanted the long haul but it’s hard to find friends that like to go for a cross country ride, my first coast to coast trip was when I was a teenager on a old panhead Harley, did a few trips on newer Harley’s but the last few have been on a 1999 Honda Valkyrie interstate just love that bike it has 100 thousand miles now but getting anyone to go is getting harder I was thinking of maybe doing some solo trips because I just love riding out west, thanks for the video

    • @AdventureswithRedbeard
      @AdventureswithRedbeard  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching! There are certainly some things I miss about riding out west. Mainly the ability to quickly get away from the crowds. I like that on the east side of the Mississippi there are lots of destinations closer together. I'll be riding to Arizona later this month (May 2023). Let me know how your solo trip planning goes.

    Nice video Redbeard. I guess TH-cam can read minds. I’m getting ready to scoot up to Moab, Utah next Friday for three days and was silently planning my trip and this video popped up. TH-cam seems to do that a lot. I do take as many trips during the year as I can. Usually around 500 to 1000 miles from my home in New Mexico. It is not uncommon for me to just hop on the bike and scoot somewhere unplanned for an overnight trip. My last two were Durango, Colorado and Ruidoso, New Mexico. I do like to keep a Butler map of the areas I am going to if one is available. I have found numerous beautiful backroads and little local mom and pop cafes that way. Be safe out there!

    • @AdventureswithRedbeard
      @AdventureswithRedbeard  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds like some great riding. I've only ridden through New Mexico, I-40 from TX to Gallup then north on 491. Those mom and pop cafes can be amazing. I need to go to Madrid, NM. Do you go there often?

      @@AdventureswithRedbeard … I live 30 minutes from Madrid on Highway 14 (The Turquoise Trail) and go up there often. Usually just pass through going on to Santa Fe or other places north. @@AdventureswithRedbeard The one tip I can think of is, I wear a water bladder backpack. I am constantly sipping on water when I travel. It's much easier than trying to drink from the cup holder with a helmet on.
      I just got back today from Colorado Springs to Indiana. 1,991 miles in 6 days. It was extremely hot traveling on a motorcycle. The water backpack saved me.
      When I stop for gas I fill up with ice and water and the gas station's usually don't charge me for the ice and water. Also on hot days the water backpack is on my back under my riding jacket so the ice cold water helps keep me cool.

      @@maverickb9465 OK, since you've only been riding smaller bikes, you may want to try out some mid-sized ones first. I suggest test riding something like the Honda Interceptor. It's a 900 cc bike that can be used for touring. It rides like a smaller bike but has lots more power. Especially when you hit the RPMs that opens all valves. That surprised me. You may also like to try a CTX 1300. It's a great touring bike as well and much larger than the Interceptor. My suggestion is to test ride bikes like these spending as much time on them as they allow, then test ride the Goldwing. It may help with the transition. This is just a suggestion. There are plenty of people who make the switch or buy a Goldwing as their first bike. Either way, have fun finding your Goldwing!
