The next time I hear that some unfortunate Palestinian kid was shot by the IDF, and they tell me that he was pointing a gun at the officers, I will be thinking of the boy in this video. He was not out to shoot anyone, he was just playing with the only thing he had access to, with no toy stores around, a hand gun.

As an Iraqi, it’s heartbreaking hearing the little kid at 9:01 say “war” while playing with a toy gun. That’s why we’re called “children of war,” because that’s what our childhoods were like. The saddest part is that, as kids, we thought it was normal. Fear, anticipation, loud explosions, losing people, and walking past human remains were just our normalized reality, and we didn’t even complain about it. Being born in 2004, I couldn’t imagine that people elsewhere lived quiet, peaceful lives. I didn’t realize how messed up my childhood was until I grew up a bit. The American invasion, the civil war, the rise of Al-Qaeda, and then ISIS occupation (2003-2018)... God, there’s way too much to say. Sorry, this tiny detail hit me harder than I expected and brought me to tears. My little sister was born in 2022, and I hope her childhood will be so much better than ours. Thank you, Mike. May God bless and protect you. Merry Christmas, guys.

This video shows how our world is only “divided” based on what we’re led on to believe by other people. Mike mate, I commend you for the work you’ve been putting in not just for this video, but for everything over the past year. It’s been a great breath of fresh air to see a content creator such as yourself showing the true beauty our world has to offer. Your journey has only just begun and I’m sure you’ll have countless more wonderful experiences with people and places throughout all your escapades. Keep doing you and best of luck in whatever you do my friend!
its not just divided by what we are led to believe. There are seriously dangerous people, places and religions in the world. Don't deceive yourself into thinking anything different, trust travel advisories and don't be dumb
@@tyborg314I ignored the travel advisory in 2018 and had the best experience ever, Iraqi people are the most welcoming, hospitable people I have met anywhere in the world. Best place I have ever been and I have been all around the world. What's you best place?
I watched a Yes Theory video a few months ago where Thomas went to Baghdad. His video plus yours has convinced me that the Iraqi people are some of the kindest people in the world. They are absolutely obsessed with hospitality. Thank you for spreading all the love that you do.
I watched a video a little while back of 'Small Brained American' visiting Iraq and the people were top-notch awesome, so kind, hospitable, funny, lovely sweet people. Now watching this i'm feeling like i want to go visit Iraq. And it's just such a thing for me because i grew up with politicians, news, media etc really demonising the people of Iraq basically, and i'm kind sad about that, like why would they do such a thing to an entire generation of kids like me, make us think that the people are iffy and the place is dangerous, couldn't be farther from the truth it seems.
I am from Iraq. The main reason people here are kind to strangers is that we rarely see people from other countries , so we get excited and very happy when we do. The global perception of our country has made it difficult for people to come here since the 1980s, However, in the last two years, we’ve started to see a change in this, and we are very happy to have you in our country 😊
@@otaku-iq7023 Iam from Iraq also but it is not the reason, I live in the holy city Karbalaa and Millions of people come to the holy city for visiting Imam hussain and they still come to our city since alot of years, but we still good and kind with them, as a person live in the holy city who have alot of shia the reason who make us kind with people is Imam Hussain we love him and our prophets and our religon told us to be kind, also we become happy when i be kind with any human
I went to Iraq the first time in 2018. (I've spent 2yrs in total) It's a wonderful country, sometimes on the brink, but it's coming back from 40 years of war. I love Iraq, it's one of my favourite places. I got back from Baghdad in October, I'm desperate to go back again. I don't understand why it's on everyone's blacklist not to visit. I have travelled around Iraq by myself many times. (Unfortunately not yet been south of Najaf). The Iraqis are a very generous people. I never felt unsafe. I never had a guide. Some parts are very modern, feels more like Dubai... Other parts, most parts, obviously less so. It's a very diverse country. I love Iraq.
The reason that iraq is on everyone’s blacklist not to visit all because of America, America want to control every country in the world so when we did not surrender, it began to attack us in the media and belittle Iraq. Despite its benefit from our wealth and the oil that we have at an almost free price, it continues to attack Iraq. Iraq always stands up to the enemies and we do not submit to their ideas. This is why they hate us. And this is why when u guys come to our country u just shocked cuz u didn’t expect to see us so innocent like that, and i really understand that this is not your fault, it’s all because of the media and your government as they always call us Terrorists. So just don’t believe the media and what they said.
It was not a "war"! It was an Invasion and genocide! War happens when two sides are equally armed and equipped for battle. What has happened for the past 100 years is a conspiracy against the little people to take them out little by little by those who own the banks.
Such generous and kind people... thank you Mike for yet again showing us real people.. wishing you a happy Christmas and I pray for peace in 2025 🙏... Ireland stands with Palestine 🇮🇪🇵🇸
Man, this video is such a solid perspective shift. You’ve taken Iraq-this place most of us just associate with war and danger-and shown the heart, the people, the stories that don’t make the headlines. The contrast between the weight of its history, like the Hanging Gardens and the scars of war, and the everyday kindness of people paying for your tea or just having a chat-it’s so real. You’ve captured the raw beauty of a misunderstood place while keeping it down-to-earth and relatable. Big props for going against the usual travel norms and showing us the soul of Iraq. Loved it!
@@mikeokay It's amazing to just see the shared humanity no matter where you go or what global politics is affecting the international views on these places.
Top work ignoring the overblown travel advisories and showing us life in Iraq. One thing I never notice many travellers do is to try adopt the arabic greeting of touching your heart instead of shaking hands.
Hey man, I’m not sure if you’ll ever see this or read it, but I just wanted to say something that’s been on my mind. You’ve genuinely made my whole day so much better, and I feel like I need to thank you for that. I’m 14 and I live in Canada, but I’ve been lucky enough to visit Vietnam a couple of times with my family. Watching your videos brings back so many great memories of those trips. There’s something about the way you capture things-the atmosphere, the moments, the vibe-that really hits home for me. Even on tough days, just watching your videos puts a smile on my face. As sad as it is to say, this is the first time I’ve seen someone truly humanize these beautiful people who have been dehumanized by our media for so long. When you can, Mike, enjoy yourself a well deserved beer - you’ve earned it.
@fericat No, it is general, but currently it is only applied in Iraq. However, if you go to more developed places near Iraq, I mean Arab countries such as the Emirates, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and Jordan, they will allow you to do whatever you want. I advise you to use them.
Great video Mike, i as an Iraq Veteran would be super sketchy about everything, but you showed the beauty of Iraq and hope it will prosper even more and once again be a great country. This video earned you a subscriber.
Unbelievably incredible and eye opening to see this video. It's hard to imagine Iraq being safe and the people hospitable I guess due to ignorance and propaganda. As you said to Ali and Ahmed: It's beautiful that two Iraqi's and a Brit can sit and enjoy a tea in a place once war torn between the two with no hard feelings. Everyone is just a human and we all share the same struggles. Thank you Mike, another beautiful video.
The environment in this video looks more hospitable than the average stroll down an American city. Insane. This is more of a show of how much of a mess America has gotten than anything.
I feel like every country in the world just has wrong place wrong time moments. There are bad people everywhere as mucb as there are good people everywhere. Mike respects culture and people which goes very far
Iraq is different now Iraq is now safe and secure because of the victory over ISIS But the media still sheds light on the period of ISIS and the American occupation.
I love that you show the human side of everything. These people are so nice, they have been through so much the past few decades and they just want to talk to you and wish you peace and make sure youre fed.
Such a great video. Showing the humanity in demonized regions just beautiful. Waaaaayyyyy way way better than another travel vlogger who happened to drop a Baghdad video today. Cutting through fear mongering in the best way
Kurt caz put out a video today also in Baghdad. But to be clear he isn’t the only one. Opened with him talking about child marriage when it had nothing to do with the rest of the video. Generally good videos but there is always this weird undertone of looking down on the places they visit. Really apparent in Muslim countries or India or poor areas of western cities. And the comment sections definitely pick it up and run with it. Backpacker Ben another example. Just some of the most outright racist things I’ve seen in his comments it’s insane. Why I really treasure these videos that actively avoid that and all the cheap easy views that would come with it. Even bald and bankrupt is susceptible to it at times, as good as he normally is.
@@pattyayyy The reason is because people are trying to remind you of the reality of the situation... Women in most of these countries do not have rights, and NONE of them have equal rights. There's a lot of issues with these places, and a few minutes of watching a westerner MAN have a normal interaction with random people shouldn't change the fact that they have atrocious human rights problems.
Wow that family picnic there was something special, it really touched me.. you know how much that means that they let you even hold the baby.. all of this in the picnic could never happen in western countrys cause we all so cold and scared of others but in reality these ppl there should be scared and specially think bad about you as a english guy but its the opposite.
Even though it was briefly, I’m glad you did mention its history of Mesopotamia! People often overlook its rich history and have the negative bias of recent wars. (Even though wars have always waged all over the globe, even in the history books!) If you do get the chance try to visit Kurdistan, Arbil or “ Hawler “ is a wonderful city to visit and will have some of the kindest people you can meet. Keep up the amazing videos man! 11:35 what you experienced right here is probably the purist form of the Iraqi life, when I watched this lovely family sitting together out in a picnic, sharing laughters and chatting about various topics, I immediately remembered my family and how we have these picnics together. I'm glad you got to experience that.
Dude, that was crazy.. love seeing these parts of the world, the old world is amazing, and its great to see them having some peace and smiles on their faces.. much love mate and be safe, from Australia
You gotta see how many projects are being built in iraq its unbelievable Dozens of 30k and 60k stadiums even one 100k stadium New massive air ports and railways and train stations And in baghdad city they are building more than 40 skyscrapers Moee than 700 new tower Almost all roads in baghdad got rebuilt Entire cities got demolished to build new modren cities New 5.7bn forest in and around baghdad to change the weather in baghdad In basra the 10th biggest port in the world will be finished soon it will create a new way for ships to replace the suez canal its called al fao port costing 17bn Countless new schools , hospitals, malls , bridges , factories etc You will see an entirely new iraq in 2030 ❤ Plus its extremely safe here i hope you can visit baghdad to see the massive constructions everywhere
Thank you for showing us the everyday Iraq. Not war, or poverty, or violence which the media loves to advertise for every other non-western country. But real people; families having picnics, children playing, people cycling, friends walking and drinking coffee; the REAL LIFE of an Iraqi citizen, not the propaganda. Amazing video as always. We need more of this. Can't wait for the next one!

Mike this was not only my favorite episode you have made but also the most interesting and well produced. This video literally make me want to get on a plane and visit Iraq straight away. Thank you so much for sharing your journey!
You do important work spreading the truth of what these places are like that us westerners don't get to see often. I live in SE Michigan (USA) and there are so many Chaldeans here, they are Iraqi Christians. Generosity is part of the Iraqi culture, the older generations always pay the tab for the younger ones, and they often fight over being able to pay the bill in restaurants. In general they are very entrepreneurial and successful, so It is no surprise that so many people are so generous to you. What a shame how much war and strife has been brought to the region, glad to see its bouncing back. Thanks and keep up the good work!

Michael, this video is powerful. You’re showing that humanity and kindness exists everywhere, even in a place where western media and governments have told us is bad and unsafe. Thank you for opening my eyes to the welcoming people of Iraq.
Wow the people are so friendly..you always get a different impression on tv. I was also there in 1990-91 with the army but really didn't have so much contact as Mike. Respect
Mike you should visit Iran next as it's next door. We are notorious for hospitality and treating our guests well, plus I'm sure you'll love the food. Safe travels mate
The Iran people are not the same as the government or police. Same as in all other demonized countries in the middle east, the people are just normal people. Most people don't have anything to do with politics or religion if you want to call it that. I've been in many of the countries there and have always been met with hospitality except for when I wore a uniform and di someone else's dirty work. Never assume, and never trust the media.
@@TheFlipshitz The govt, and the people. Two separate entities. Their govt is shit (same can be said many others too), but the peeps are generally very decent.
Visa problems are the main obstacle for most Westerners visiting Iran. However, one advantage of having an Iraqi passport is that it allows visa-free travel to Iran!
This is a great episode! your incredible demeanor and interaction with locals is inspiring and Babylon still reigns as THE most important ancient city. Medea is also one of the most important oracles in the ancient magical tradition as well so thank you for mentioning her as well!
Thank you for sharing this beautiful culture. Muslim faith requires its people to be generous to strangers. They often don’t understand why other cultures are so cold and indifferent to travelers. I studied Arabic for a year at a university to better understand derstand the war and conflict. I gained respect for the Muslim people from the Middle East and around the world.
Please don’t mix religion and culture. Iraq had a secular socialist government. The people are just kind, not because of some religious rule - speaking as an Iraqi myself.
Fast becoming one of my favourite channels. I find myself sucked into each one of your videos. Just shows that most of the people in every county all want the same thing. Peace!
Thanks for shining the light on these beautiful people. They didn't deserve all the hardship they have had to endure over the last half century but they endured and still kept their hearts full and welcoming. You don't see this in the UK anymore simply because the gov has pushed people apart. Doesn't make me want to visit anywhere in the middle east anytime soon simply because a lack of understanding with language barrier and i'd always be uncertain just how safe the borders really would be for a foreign traveller. But it's something i will keep my eye on and hope that things keep improving for the people.
This is some of the best true life documentary work on this platform. Well done Mike. If you are ever in eastern Canada, I will happily buy you a meal and a beer.
Your energy is amazing dude! Confidence and positive energy, which is 100% authentic - it disarms many people and draws many others to you...........loved this, the world would be a better place with more folks like you in it

As an iraqi myself, i welcome you and everyone that want to visit our country.
the reason why people and the childrens specificly that shown in the video were so excited to see and talk with you is because they haven't seen someone from outside someone that isn't Arabian in thier life, so it was a quit experience for them.
i really hope i see and talk to some tourists one day.
again, you are very welcome we will always be happy Hosting you and every guest, wishing you a safe flight, and take care ❤
The global perception of our country has made it difficult for people to come here since the 1980s,
However, in the last two years, we’ve started to see a change in this, and we are very happy to have you in our country 😊
@@otaku-iq7023
Iam from Iraq also but it is not the reason, I live in the holy city Karbalaa and Millions of people come to the holy city for visiting Imam hussain and they still come to our city since alot of years, but we still good and kind with them, as a person live in the holy city who have alot of shia the reason who make us kind with people is Imam Hussain we love him and our prophets and our religon told us to be kind, also we become happy when i be kind with any human
❤ 🇮🇶
We love people but the media has wronged us
The reason that iraq is on everyone’s blacklist not to visit all because of America, America want to control every country in the world so when we did not surrender, it began to attack us in the media and belittle Iraq.
Ireland stands with Palestine 🇮🇪🇵🇸
much love from Iraq to our Irish friends
Man, this video is such a solid perspective shift. You’ve taken Iraq-this place most of us just associate with war and danger-and shown the heart, the people, the stories that don’t make the headlines. The contrast between the weight of its history, like the Hanging Gardens and the scars of war, and the everyday kindness of people paying for your tea or just having a chat-it’s so real. You’ve captured the raw beauty of a misunderstood place while keeping it down-to-earth and relatable. Big props for going against the usual travel norms and showing us the soul of Iraq. Loved it!
Honestly Mike, you're like the best mood booster ever. Thank you for all the joy you bring !
My pleasure!

Very interesting video. Welcome to Iraq. We hope you visit us often and learn about our traditions.
Wow Mike, that interaction at the river side was amazing. How such a war torn country can have such kind, and generous people is breathtaking
Thank you, currently there is no war, we live in peace and stability 😊❤
This video made me cry. Humanity is so beautiful! This channel is so wholesome. Just beautiful! ❤❤❤
Top work ignoring the overblown travel advisories and showing us life in Iraq. One thing I never notice many travellers do is to try adopt the arabic greeting of touching your heart instead of shaking hands.
Patting your chest after a handshake and warm greeting is the habit, at least it was during the 9 years I lived in Arabia.
Touching ones heart sometimes they raise their hand or similar as salute. Then put it over their heart. ... That is honor respect from the Heart
This is the kind of video's worth watching.
EXACTLY ❤👍🇿🇦🇬🇧
If you want to be you will become one of the most watched journalist man. Keep up the content we're loving it!
Hey man,
I’m not sure if you’ll ever see this or read it, but I just wanted to say something that’s been on my mind.
Your content gives me this incredible sense of nostalgia, and it’s hard to explain, but it’s like I’m reliving some of the happiest times of my life. Even on tough days, just watching your videos puts a smile on my face. There’s something so special about what you do, and I don’t think I’ve ever felt this kind of connection to content like this before.
So, thank you. Thank you for making something that resonates with people like me. I really hope you keep doing what you love because you’re genuinely making an impact, even on someone like me, halfway across the world.
Take care, and I hope this message reaches you someday.
Ur a G
And no this is not ai.
If anything, I also feel the same watching Mike's travel vlogs.
Oh and I'm from Vietnam too!
Bro. Who are you? This is top notch content and I wish I was your friend. You are exactly what we need more of in this beautiful crazy world
The family picnic by the river inviting you to join them is wholesome.
Was there last year for 1 month. Was by myself and didn't know any Arabic had no problems. Traveled over whole country and Kurdistan by mini bus and share taxi. Also hitch-hiked a few times with no problems. People so friendly and helpful.
As sad as it is to say, this is the first time I’ve seen someone truly humanize these beautiful people who have been dehumanized by our media for so long. When you can, Mike, enjoy yourself a well deserved beer - you’ve earned it.
We do not welcome those who drink beer or alcohol. This is a beautiful Muslim country. We do not like those who do this in front of us.
@@جدك Yes sure man no one drinks in Iraq, dude which reality doy you live in.
@@جدك is this a sunni/shia 'rule' or general muslim?
@fericat No, it is general, but currently it is only applied in Iraq. However, if you go to more developed places near Iraq, I mean Arab countries such as the Emirates, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and Jordan, they will allow you to do whatever you want. I advise you to use them.
What a beautiful video. This shattered my American perception of the middle east in ways I didn't know it could. Godspeed, Michael!
He is a man
Iraq is different now Iraq is now safe and secure because of the victory over ISIS But the media still sheds light on the period of ISIS and the American occupation.
There are hard feelings. You never held your war criminals accountable!
I love that you show the human side of everything. These people are so nice, they have been through so much the past few decades and they just want to talk to you and wish you peace and make sure youre fed.
As someone who spent a year in Iraq, I am very excited for this series.

Such a great video. Showing the humanity in demonized regions just beautiful. Waaaaayyyyy way way better than another travel vlogger who happened to drop a Baghdad video today.
Cutting through fear mongering in the best way
Who is the one who did it badly?
I Watch Mike and Sabbatical only so idk many others lol

(Even though wars have always waged all over the globe, even in the history books!)
If you do get the chance try to visit Kurdistan, Arbil or “ Hawler “ is a wonderful city to visit and will have some of the kindest people you can meet.

Thanks and keep up the good work!
they are not chaldeans. they have migrated out of iraq thousands of years ago.
@@nicechock They are Chaldeans, they speak Chaldean, are Christian, and many of them came to America in boats throughout the 1900s. There are Iraqi Christians still there in this youtube video.
Awesome video man. Iraqi hospitality is second to none. Thanks for showing this - can only hope they get their day in the sun and a chance to thrive in peace.
I'm so excited for this series. Iraq is a wonderful and crazy place.
Michael, this video is powerful. You’re showing that humanity and kindness exists everywhere, even in a place where western media and governments have told us is bad and unsafe. Thank you for opening my eyes to the welcoming people of Iraq.
