  • In this tenth and concluding episode of Egil's Saga (Chapters 82-92) we learn of Arinbjorn's death, Egil's final days and the fates of his children as well as the Christianization of Iceland. Reading from the 1893 translation by WC Green which is in the public domain. This story was first written down in Iceland in 1240 AD by "Anonymous" but many people believe it to be the work of Snorri Sturluson.
Narration, original music and black and white film (shot in Iceland and Norway) by me, Ulf Crow.

Egil wanted to go out with a bang. One of of the last giants. This last one was full of emotion but much more humor.
Thank you for telling these stories.
I'm gonna binge again from the beginning now.
You are very underrated and I will pass his along to everyone I know
    Well done and thank you.

Thank you very much for this amazing, long series. It is hard to imagine how much labour went into this.
It was a nice surprise after searching for a long time nearly all the English narrations seemed to be AI-generated.
Then found a promising one by an Icelandic lady on Bandcamp and bought it, but unfortunately later found out it was incomplete.
I'm curious @VIKINGSAGAS what is your native language/nationality? Your accent sounded a bit like Welsh sometimes but it's hard to tell (anyway it suited the narration very well). Look forward to your other work.

I am a man of many words but struggle to find an appropriate response to this magnificent work. With this project you have joined a chain of transmission reaching back through W.C. Green through generations of tellers and schlolar to Snorri and Sæmundr, all the way back to Egil himself. Your performative reading and the ambient music are both superb and the saga itself is a treasure trove -perhaps the clearest and most important window into the semi-Pagan, semi-Christianised past of the Northern Lands. Even with my deeply retarded level of Icelandic I can half-read some of the primary texts and beginiing to sense how compressed and poetic the language can be. Egil's wordsmithing still resonates over a thousand years after its composition - i would strongly encourage anyone who wants to learn more about the Icelandic language NOT to be discouraged by claims that it is weirdly difficult, takes five years to become halfway proficient, and so on. ''Icelandic Online'' is a free resource from the Icelandic government and after less than a year with a few hours per week I can read enough to approach the poetry. It is well worth the effort. Once again, I can not praise you highly enough for opening up this world to English listeners. Truly outstanding. M.D.P.

Daniel, thank you so much for your comment. I am incredibly grateful to be able to help you enjoy this story in a way you couldn't before. It is for tales such as yours that I keep doing this. I have a family member with dyslexia and have read books out loud to him and now as I write this, I suspect this may be one of the reasons why I do this; for the shear joy of telling tales to others who might not be able to enjoy them otherwise. Once again, thank you for sharing this heartfelt comment.

You are very welcome! Thank you for listening and watching. I am indeed working on the Saga of Gunnlaug Worm-tongue right now, which is in many ways a sequel to Egil's Saga. After that I plan to do Erik the Red's Saga and will be taking requests. Do you have any specific sagas you would like read by me?
