The vast majority of people, including (and especially) the people who vehemently deny it, base their first impressions and interest in another person on their looks. So starting a relationship from that is totally normal. Natural even, considering the number of animals that do the same. The anime doesn't show anything past this point but I think there's a whole arc about him trying to befriend her and starting from 0, and then there's the classic thing about him being "a little more weighty" and she not caring at all by that point.
