  • Tension in the Scandinavian region continues to grow every year, and the Nordic countries are looking for ways to strengthen their national security.
This is where the JAS-39 Gripen fighters come into play, these being one of the most important components of the region’s defense strategy.
In today’ video, we’ll be telling you why this Swedish aircraft makes Russian generals nervous, especially with Sweden and Finland joining NATO!

Nothing has been said in the video about the almost unmatched information sharing and network capability of this fighter which can be linked with several air, land and sea units and use their data and information. For example a formation of four Gripens can link their radars together to cover a vast area of sky. Now add the surface radars and AWACS radars ...

The avionics system is not only modular, but even very fast upgradable, as the only in the world. "upgrade in the morning and fly in the afternoon" is possible in most causes. This give Gripen the capability to carry nearly all weapons and pods for combat aircrafts in the world. Including targeting pods, EW pods and RECCE pods. The built in very powerful EW system with spherical coverage usually make extra EW pods unneccesary though.
Engine replacement is made in less than 1 hous at a forward base with 1 shipping container with equipment, 1 proffesional technichian and 5 conscrips. Mostly only a modul of the engine need to be replaced though, which is faster. Full rearming and fuelling take max 20 min. Rearming and fuelling for AA-mission take max 10 min.

Let's summarize: built for a 50 year lifespan, systems such as the engine are designed in repairable segments that can make for faster repairs at lower costs, low operating costs, requires only a small ground crew to fuel and load weapons, can operate from short runways, flexible capability to conduct different missions using one single jet, capable of carrying multiple current weapons as weal as future weapons systems, advanced avionics, flight characteristics, and on and on. You can certainly tell this jet was not designed by American aerospace companies! Imagine how much the US could cut its military budgets with jets that are built to operate long term at lower costs. Maybe we need to be purchasing from Sweden.

    As I see it:
Yes, Sweden has time after time shown they can punch way above what could be expected of a country of its size. 😀❗
I could think of another country with double the population and significantly more natural resources which - in spite of that, lack the ambition to emulate Swedens impressive achievements on many levels, including significant self- sufficiency with domestically developed and manufactured military equipment.😀👍
Yet on the opposite side of mother Earth we have Australia that semingly find the self-suficiency concept just too hard to contemplate, yet alone achieve.
That attitude has resulted in "significant foreign debt over many decades" and no sign this strategy is about to change anytime soon.
So, instead of the Australian people designing and making their own gear while creating employement and developing valuable skills locally, they order their fighter planes and overpriced submarines etc, from abroard and create employement elsewhere whilr creating a huge foreign debt for current and future generations to repay, if indeed they ever manage that.!!! 😩
It is a sad travesty that great oppotunities are squandred due to systemic apathy and lack of vision by those elected to make "good decisions" on behalf of the people they represent.💤
    Stay safe. Niels 💖💕

Two features interest me: low operation and maintenance cost, and ability to operate in cold winters. Canada has a major air force base in Cold Lake, Alberta. Winters are even colder than Kiruna in northern Sweden. And Canada used to have an air force station in Resolute; if relations between NATO and Russia continue to deteriorate, Canada may have to re-commission that air force station. As a "station", fighter jets would not be permanently based there, but could be temporarily assigned there during an incident or a period of tension. That would require fighter jets to operate there any time, 12 months per year. So cold weather operation is a concern.

The success of a platform depends on its success in the market, and Gripen did not show much. His sales are going very poorly. 28 in the CD version leased them in the Czech Republic 14 and Hungary 14, they are the only European users along with Sweden as a producer country. Brazil, when they are all fully delivered, will have 40 of them. South Africa has 26, Thailand 8 and that's where the story ends. The story of some supremacy over Russian planes is ridiculous!

@@NUMMEHARBEN The problem is also in The Swedish politics, which through the sale of aircraft wants to make an impact in a country interested in buying. Some of the potential byer's swedes themselves refused and most interested parties refused to buy because of such conditions.

    • @RobertClaeson
      @RobertClaeson 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

The business of military aircraft is very complex. Technical and "fit for purpose" considerations are one thing. Another thing is financing. Military aircraft are generally co-funded or entirely funded by the countries that first request and specify them. All sales have to go through them. This means a lot of political considerations, trade deal negotiations ("we buy X planes from you in exchange for Y"), and other considerations ("let us bring you on a four-week trip to Z, all costs paid, with your families, for us to show you W").
Also, what SAAB is producing is effectively a software and hardware framework sufficiently modular to integrate specific products from other manufacturers, often in other countries. That makes Gripen highly flexible as they can pick and choose the best and most appropriate subsystem from any manufacturer in the world, but also vulnerable to political decisions. Any country where an important subsystem is made can block a deal because they, too, want to sell a competing product to the same potential buyer.
