I love that everyone is not allowed to touch the produce in Italy! And in the smaller town markets, there is usually someone behind the counter with gloves handing out the produce. As for the eggs, they are fine unrefrigerated. We never refrigerated eggs in the US either until about the late 70's or early 80's. And THAT was weird at first.
The difference in egg handling between the United States and Italy (and many other European countries) depends on the method of salmonella prevention used in these regions. In the United States, eggs are washed and disinfected before being sold, a process that removes the cuticle, a natural protective layer that coats the shell. Without this barrier, eggs become more vulnerable to bacterial contamination, so they need to be stored in the refrigerator to slow bacterial growth and maintain food safety. In Italy and Europe, eggs are not washed, so the cuticle remains intact, providing natural protection. Additionally, many European farms use vaccination against salmonella, further reducing the risk. Without the need for refrigeration, eggs can be stored at room temperature in supermarkets. Therefore, the difference is mainly due to safety regulations and the different approaches to salmonella prevention.
@@Wmenica73 So I guess it would cost them less money to not wash the eggs and they could be stored at room temp. So what changed in the US, because up until the early eighties eggs were not refrigerated in the store.
Pretty similar in France (carts, bags for veggies, for the checkout sometimes you have to scan the ticket too). But for example when you scan items by yourself the ticket go out at the end. As I went to Italy a few time i wasn't so lost about it ahah. So cool to see how in every country everything is different, except in Europe where it's practically the same in a lot of countries. So excited to see your next video! can't wait for you to visit Europe and maybe come to south of France, hopefully I can see you soon. Have an awesome day, bye :)
I like that you shared your grocery experience on the economy and what they offer compared to the commissary. When we were stationed overseas in England and Germany we would do the same thing.
A farmer told me. When you don’t wash eggs or refrigerate them when they are laid it can stay good up for months. The moment you wash them you have ti out the em in the fridge..
Exactly!!!! the eggs are simply brushed on the outside, if you wash them, the shell being very porous, because it must transpire and bring oxygen inside for the eventual chick, any liquid can easily enter and contaminate both the egg white and the yolk...
i loooove getting fruit off base, yes it spoils faster BUT it tastes SO MUCH BETTER. and honestly, i don’t buy ice cream on base anymore either because i can get a giant thing of gelato at aldi for like €2 and again, it’s not a fancy flavor but it’s tastes much better to me! 😂
Hey Brittany! Thank you for posting again! I enjoy your videos, they’ve helped me so much! Especially since my boyfriend and I are just beginning the military life!
Just a remark: Barilla is an Italian brand that has business in the states and not the other way around? Also - you can buy non refrigerated eggs - chicken are vaccinated.
Forgot to ask you a question about life on Aviano AB. Do the F16 (?) jets occasionally takeoff at, say, 2, 3 or 4 am in full afterburner when they are participating in some military exercise? And are the on-base quarters soundproofed to some extent for just that reason? Hope all is well.
Really enjoyed watching this video Brittany. I was really surprised that meats, cream cheese and a few other things are actually cheaper off base than at the Aviano commissary! I’m assuming here (bad to do, I know) that the Aviano AB commissary and BX are operated by the AAFES. I would think that the US DOD, via AAFES, would help “subsidise” the cost of groceries for US military personnel stationed overseas, but maybe not. You showed the haul from the commissary that cost $57!!! That’s a lot of money, considering there wasn’t any meat in there. Also, Wal Mart needs to install those receipt scanners near the exit doors so they don’t need someone to visually inspect *every single receipt * as we leave the store. LOL. Hope you and your husband are enjoying your assignment at Aviano. Sorry for rambling.
so interesting how cheddar cheese isn't common in Italy. also the scanning your receipt when you leave the store is so insane to me lol. Def a super in detailed video and I'm sure it's going to be so helpful for people moving there. Also good to know just in general! Can't wait for your next video!
There is no need to be rude. Cheddar cheese is mainly English and it is a proper cheese. I am Italian too. It is just not a custom to eat cheddar cheese in Italy - that is it, just like many French or Spanish cheeses. Chill out@@alessandrom7181
Why should we use cheddar in italy ? An orange cheese then, it's scary just to look at it!!!😂 We have hundreds of much better and genuine italian cheeses!!!
I’ll be moving there in early next year and I was wondering if you could give me some pointers this is our first oconus move thank you so much in advance 🙏
Wow girl.... You are in the land of NO OMG! You should be buying everything you can off base! Eggs do NOT need to be refrigerated. You will find 4 kinds. Your typical farmed chickens that live in the cage all their life. The kind that live on a warehouse floor and the kind that you would call free-range. In any case no ogm.
and I believe you!...farmed chickens are the least natural thing there is, a summary from research carried out in Italy and other countries around the world..||Let's be clear, these are not conditions that are harmful to health , according to veterinarians. We are talking about unbalanced animals, grown quickly to excessively increase their chest muscles, who struggle to move, animals with muscle inflammation considered by some researchers to be a suspected pathological process. This rapid and exaggerated growth is reflected in the quality of the meat which presents white streaks of fat and fibrous tissue which modify the nutritional composition. Then there are burns on the legs and hocks (pododermatitis) caused by litter that is not managed properly.|| These are the chicks (chickens only after 230 40 days) produced by the multinational AVIAGEN, if you are a real and natural chicken free-range chickens, you recognize them by the dark yellow color of their meat! Always pay attention to what you eat!!!
Barilla has been an Italian brand for over 100 years, founded in Parma, it is one of the largest food multinationals in the world and is the largest producer of pasta and flour in the world. In America it owns many factories, which produce various shapes of pasta, adapted to the tastes and way of cooking pasta in America, they often use soft wheat instead of durum wheat since in your Sates you use to cook the pasta directly in the pan with the seasonings. As a good officer of the Italian Armed Forces (FF.AA) I often happen to meet your colleagues from the US Army, Navy etc etc, and from them I learned about your interpretation of Italian food, which was then personally verified in the USA, I can tell you that perhaps it is better than you as far as Italian is concerned food, contact our supermarkets, shops or open-air markets. I am sure about one thing, and I promise you, the quality will always be exceptional and of the highest quality! Kind regards
American sun kist tuna junk full of mercury. Change to Italian tuna You will discover what tuna really tastes like. Even Conad generic brand is much better. The best are Parodi or Calipo brands Rio Mare is cheaper and not as good as it is a more popular brand but in any case far superior to American junk food.
The glove thing is weird. Off the chain really and so not necessary. So concerned about charging for little plastic produce bags but waste on gloves. Really not smart 😂
HEY YANKEE. THIS IS ALL WRONG. YOU CAN NOT COMPARE THE PRICES OF ITALIAN CIVILIAN SUPERMARKET WITH AN AMERICA MILITARY BASE. THE PRICES ON BASE ARE LOWER. COMPARE THE COMMISSARY PRICES WITH AMERICAN CIVILIAN SUPERMARKET AND SEE A WHOLE DIFFERENCE. TRY TO BE MORE HONEST. SEE YOU YANKEE.
Lol those are not even real Mexican products there actually Mexican American products , good video my daughter is actually stationed in Italy keep it up guy,s , here in San Bernardino California appreciate all your hard work .
The eggs are OK. We don't need refrigerated them because in Italy they don't wash eggs before

barilla is an italian brand...
and it's the worst pasta in Italy ;) i prefer "la molisana" or "rummo" ;)

Non ha mai detto che fosse una mancanza, ha semplicemente osservato una differenza senza alcun tipo di connotazione.

This Video was really helpful
Never put eggs in the fridge and conad is quite an expensive supermarket

Why should cheddar be common in Italy ?? LOL
Here we are in Italy and we have something like 500 types of cheeses.
Is that even a cheese?😂

I actually just pcs’d to Aviano so this pretty useful 😂 😅
Yay! Welcome☺️ I have quite a few other “Aviano” videos as well, feel free to check them out and don’t forget to subscribe💛
Can I, an Italian, go and visit the shop in the base?
No
I think you do have to use gloves in the bakery section
The shopping comparison was not fair. The items were all different. The choices did not make purely lasting weekly meals.
commenting as I go
Oh it was a learning curve for sure! Walking up to the register and we’re both just staring at eachother like 😶

uhmm ma'am, it's a scallop...

We introduced glove during covid. Then, people get used to it. And, it's igenic.
I see, so in the entire world they think that all Latin Americans are Mexicans....
