The TH-cam algorithms did their magic and brought me here and I’m glad it did. Brilliant documentary... would love to see a follow up on what programmes are in place to combat coastal degradation in Guyana.

This is one of the best documentaries ive seen from guyana with real locals, as a filmmaker of guyanese decent and my parents homeland I was moved by this. Great work on this piece. Love from NYC

@Bud U you aint never lie on this one, we know through college that industrialization in the superpower countries has done almost irreversible damage to the earth. I do agree that Guyana does need better infrastructure so that it can become the land it has the potential to be. Its already rich in natural resources yet infrastructure is something that would take it to another level. Love though from your fellow Guyanese decent brother.

Wow...Alex very informative, can also hear your concerns in your voice, most of my childhood I lived in Kitty and would fish and visit the seawall often, whenever I speak to anyone in Guyana they never sound concerned but this documentary is a game changer( for me) . What next to protect our beautiful Guyana.

Thanks to everyone that committed to make this documentary. It's a serious problem that needs to be address immediately. I was watching how India started to plant mangrove trees, Knowing at this point small plants cannot survive with those waves, It's a better Idea to grow the plants into small trees and then transplant them along the coast line with some caring eventually it will help to slow down and reclaim the coast. Prayers with action will do it. Immediate action please. It's not a one person problem, Its every Guyanese problem. Otherwise in next five years or so those beautiful houses and roads will not be there, it will be covered with water.

Another really excellent documentary and narration by our very own son of the soil, Mr. Alex Arjoon, written par excellence by Mr. Charlie Tokeley.
Keep up the good work and your standard of production. I pray that the relevant people in authority and various stakeholders will play an active role in dispensing these imminent threats to not just our coastline, but the very survival and existence of our people, villages and towns.
    A very concerned citizen.

I am a Guyanese but I live in Canada now and this absolutely breaks my heart to see that this is the reality. This is OUR motherland. We cannot let it go under. This land is home to our culture and family. We need to do something about this. A lot of Guyanese citizens fail to understand A wall isn’t strong enough against the OCEAN. It’s a huge OCEAN. The Government needs to do something about this. This topic needs more awareness. I would love to help to get this out. My heart genuinely breaks to find out that this is a REAL issue in my home country

Excellent documentary Reel Guyana . I am so impressed with all your videos and this one in particular is so educational . The only practical long term solution is a strategically planned coastal retreat . How ironic that at the same time Guyana faces these enormous challenges of sea level rise, massive foreign owned offshore oil extraction and production is ramping up in your territorial waters. We pay a terrible price for our oil addiction.

Great video but a troubling one too. It is definitely a scary really to see our coastal land disappearing as the coastline recedes further inland. I am moved by this video to the point where I will make a suggestion with the hope that someone will pass it onto the relevant government official(s) so that an urgent plan of action can be set in motion before it is too late. I am aware that finance is an issue but it will not get any better with inaction. The Dutch are very experienced in sea defence and water management issues. Maybe they can be consulted for some form of meaningful assistance.

Guyana have a lot of timbers the should take some piles pole and put like six together and stick it down like five hundred feet out from the sea wall so it can break the force of the water and that will help alot.

Alex, this video is remarkably informative but it hurts to view at the same time. Architects (like myself) and Masterplanners can develop ideas that can help to build cost effective, resilient and sustainable ways to create communities that are able to live with this dynamic coastline. I trust the government would prioritise this environmental and social matter and request for support around the world, before it's too late.

To fellow Guyanese, time to think of our behaviors and work together with Mother Nature. This planet is all we have and may be the only place in the universe that will love us unconditionally. Let's each day as we pray for our success, give her a gentle hug in our mind. And display that love through our behaviors. Stay safe.

You need to address solutions boss. Thank you for your amazing documentary.

Fellow Guyanese, the answer to the problem is in the Scriptures.God is in control of the tides and seasons. There is a verse that says that the waves cannot cross the boundaries that He has set.We have to consider our ways and doings and repent of our sinful and selfish ways to turn away His wrath and save our country. We have strayed so far that many does not believe that He exist.Surely this is the answer to our woes.

This is soo sad, coming is another disaster from oil spills which might be worse than in The Mexican Gulf. wish there was a mighty group to counter these oil companies their only goal is to pump as much oil in the shortest possible time like they did in Trinidad with the natural gas there was to two trains they ended up with six trains. God Save Guyana From these disasters.

What is the government doing with the oil money? Everyone is bragging how Guyana is getting rich with all the “big big buildings” going up. The problem with most Guyanese is that they want to see immediate material wealth and they neglect their surroundings. You can’t even get shrimp to buy and when you do, it’s at a high cost. The livelihood of farmers and fishermen are at threat of not having that livelihood for too long. Many have abandoned that livelihood due to the environmental destruction. Yet, the Guyana government is not doing enough.

This is an international problem. I think only the Dutch has this problem covered for now. But it is such a small country compared to all other countries. It is best to start moving more land inwards when it comes to the next generation building their new homes. Start making new neighborhoods more land inwards that is still meters above sea-level. But then yes we will lose more rain forests but most of those forest are already torn to bits by gold (mineral) mines and wood harvests.

You had to bring politics into this huh? Ppp had 23 years what did they do to fix it? Both parties need to take blame for failing guyanese in someway. However PPP is in a league of their own. Ppp killed over 400 people. Linked to roger khan, drugs. Guyana was a narco state. It was blacklisted on the e.u money laundering list. Under apnu, Now guyana is famous for tourism, completely delisted. Drug money dried up etc. There is no massive killings, and people kidnapped and killed based on ethnicity. Every country has crime, but the crime rate, and corruption has decreased significantly. Cops are being jailed now, whole of canu and licensing departments fired et. Criminals are being caught. Country is much cleaner, roads built etc. I can go on and on. You get the point.

Every thing is credited to mother nature, what about Father God who controls mother nature. The sea ain't suppose to pass it's boundery. If it does, find out why, maybe that is the way He is trying to get our attention. If He can send rain to water vegetation, can't He keep the water from the ocean out?
