A brilliant man, and even better philosopher. Derek would have called mourning his passing unreasonable, but I still can't stop myself.

Would be great if someone could provide a link to the handouts Derek Parfit refers to in this talk.

@@Alex.G.Harper Sorry, I don't get your meaning. Are you saying that some of what he talks about was not covered in his last work, Vol 3 of OWM?

The Non-Identity problem depends on the conditions of the future world. If there was ever a world where anyone knew that their child would 'only' live till forty, this entails the knowledge in this possible world would allow its inhabitants to know the age their children will die. Then the question is which child? When? Which conception? Not how old the child might live.

Suffering is an innate aspect of existence. The cosmic horror of the death of the universe is enough to justify ending all life in the universe through non-reproduction in my opinion. Unless, we are confident that we could solve this ability and prolong human existence indefinitely and ensure a just and fair society.

The end of the universe will happen in millions and billions of years. We still have plenty of time to let many more generations live. It's too early to extinct.

Mortally boring! One sentence of Kant's, one phrase of Rousseau's, contains more reflection, depth, and genuine thought about the meaning & problem of morality than anything this "man" could have dreamed of. Amazing that so many "persons" can sit and listen to the half-wit droned musings of this 𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 𝙗𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙝𝙤𝙢𝙪𝙣𝙘𝙪𝙡𝙪𝙨! Are they really "persons"?

considering the huge impact the non-identity problem had on modern ethics, it would be silly of you to dismiss parfit just because he's not a good orator (and i really don't think he is).

What does or does not bore you fails to provide any position from which to judge the quality of this or any other individual's thought

Oh hey, and just saying. Quoting to someone else to boost your ego doesnt make you any more smarter than what your believe you are.
