  • In this video I show you how you can fix your expensive Natural Hair Watercolor Brushes. I also discuss whether your really need expensive Kolinsky brushes or not?
I just bought an expensive set of the Jean Haines watercolor brushes - and when they arrived, one of the rounds looked like the tip of the brush had been damaged.
After corresponding with Rosemary & Co whom I had bought the brushes from, I tried out the fix they suggested, and I am sharing that with you in this video.

Don't you just hate opening the packaging to see no point to your new brushes! I'm glad you straightened them out. I wish I had known in the beginning just how important it was to find the brushes that suits my own style. Happy painting Eva.

Thank you so much Scarlet. Yes, it's disappointing when your art supplies arrive in a less than perfect condition. Luckily most of the suppliers I work with are really good about standing behind their products. And in this case the damage was not permanent, so I am looking forward to many fun hours using my new, beautiful Jean Haines watercolor brushes!

Yes, this technique is only for natural hair brushes. The type of plastic that is used to make the bristles of artificial brushes cannot absorb the moisture from the conditioner, and when you are seeing the bristles out of shape with the naked eye, the plastic has actually fractured or broken at the microscopic level, and cannot be repaired/refreshed. That is part of the reason for the huge price disparity between the types of brushes.

New goodies are inspirational. I still use my Kolinsky sables after 20+ years. But i gifted myself a Princeton Long round #12 (like a magic wand somedays) just rince out the goo and star painting. Rinse reshape and lay flat to dry between uses. Good luck and enjoy your new tools.. No guilt.. Specially if thats how you earn a living. I think a lot of the synthetics eat the paper. Sables are the best.

Thank you so much for your comment Onna - yes good tools are essential! And I appreciate your kind words about not feeling guilty :) Good paper and good brushes make all the difference! The beautiful thing about watercolor painting is that you never stop learning! Keeps us young!

Eva, those are gorgeous brushes! Your tip on conditioner makes total sense, glad it worked. I always rinse my brushes and reshape and let dry between painting sessions. My sables have lasted very well, I love them. The Jean Haines set is so beautiful. ❤️

Thanks so much - yes if you take good care of your watercolor brushes they will last you a long, long time, so its worth spending a little extra for good brushes!

There a 2 ways that works for me ,I dipped them in hot water for 1minutes, the other is use 2 drops of gum Arabic, work that in ,let dry and rinse out before use ,this is a good way when traveling with brushes ,it keeps the hairs together, must try the conditioner. Tfs

Thank you so much Maria for sharing your two tricks. - I have tried to use the gum Arabic on a synthetic brush that needed to be re-shaped, and it worked pretty well. I think if you have a real "problem" brush starting with the hot water treatment and then adding the gum Arabic would probably take care of most problems.
