Michael was in the navy and grew up in Washington state. The Navy brought him to Virginia and then when he got out he was working as a contractor for the Navy. We are moving to be closer to his family and because I visited Washington one year and ever since have dreamed of ending up in Washington state one day.
We also moved from Virginia to Washington state with all of our kids in a mini van. We moved during the week of Spring break so kids would not miss any school. Thank you for saying that Washington state is expensive. It seems that no one believes me when I say that. We have lived in NC, VA, Florida, Texas, & Arizona. There is not a Winco in our town but there is one 20 plus miles away. Winco letters stands for Washington, Idaho, Nevada, California & Oregon. I am told that Winco is now in other states too.
Born and raised here in Western Washington state. It is beautiful here; mountains, lakes, rivers, douglas fir trees (it's called the "Evergreen State" for a reason!), coastline...there's so much to see and do. Be aware though of a few things. Others have mentioned it is expensive up here for groceries; gas as well, in fact they are probably going to raise the gas tax soon so it will probably go over $4 a gallon depending on where you are. The cheapest gas is sometimes to be had on reservations (native Americans). It does rain up here a LOT, although technically it doesn't rain more than say New York--what it does have is more overcast days. Not as much sunshine, so take your vitamin D. Rainy season is October through April. Depending on where you are, it doesn't snow as much as other parts of the country. If you're closer to Puget Sound you won't get a lot of snow during winter. The ground does not freeze solidly like it might in northern states. And the days are shorter in winter and longer in summer. Right now it's starting to get dark at 3:30 p.m. In the summer we can have daylight until nearly 11 p.m.! And summers in Western Washington generally do not top over 85 degrees for very long periods of time (it's usually around 75--80 in July. August is when we get our hotter weather). Welcome!
A tip for you if you live closer to the oregon border - we have no sales tax so lots of folk will travel to buy some groceries at a cheaper cost, especially if you’re in Vancouver
1) congrats on your move! You got this! 2) WA is super expensive and that 3 bedroom for just under $3K a month is actually not the worst I've heard. I just left Kitsap county paying $1200 for a studio. 3) one of the few grown up joys is new/fresh spices. May I recommend adding Trader Joes onion salt to the staples list. Its not in the dollar tree budget but dang is it good on some eggs and pasta. Cheers Rebecca and Mr. Rebecca! Safe travels, cant wait to see what's next for you.
I live in Canada and am always hitting up my Mum (who lives in FL) for Trader Joe's spice blends and other shelf-stable treats. I think my all-time favourite is the Ajika Georgian Seasoning Blend, which of course has been discontinued. My niece and nephew are both getting a jar of the Onion Salt with their Christmas loot this year.♥
My mom uses a calendar and assigns a meat/ protein, veg, starch for supper each day of the week (beef , potatoes, broccoli Monday, chicken , rice, carrots; Tuesday; pork, green bean, pasta Wednesday) that way she knows what to buy ahead of time but can vary the meals by style or seasoning. She does similar for breakfast and lunch. It takes the guesswork out of it to some extent and helps her streamline her cooking since she doesn’t have a lot of time to cook and come up with ideas. Hopefully this idea helps someone.
As a fellow Virginian I completely understand y’all moving away from here! I live in a very small town with little to no opportunities for jobs. The kids that are graduating high school are doing everything they can to get away from here!! My grandson went in the army back in April and is in CO now. He loves the area but he’s mighty homesick!! I miss him so much!! Good luck sweet Rebecca!!!! Take your time and I hope y’all have a safe, beautiful trip😊😊❤❤
Please thank your grandson for his service. I am sure he is very homesick. You miss him terribly. Along with the worry about him being in the Army. My husband is retired Navy. There just were no other opportunities for him. It ended being very good decision. That he loved. Sending hugs from Illinois.
I know you’ll love Washington. I was born and raised in Pasco, WA, eastern side of the state. Moved to Portland, OR, and raised our children. I was there for over 30 years. Retired to Vicksburg, MS, to be with retired family; Mom, older and younger sisters and a brother in law. Fast forward just over 6 years. Broth in-law and Mom passed away and we three sisters are tired of the 10 long months of heat. Bought land last Nov in Kalama, WA, about 35 miles north of Portland and my kids and grandsons. Hoping our new home will be ready to move into in March. That’s when we’ll take our cross country trip, driving two vehicles. Safe travels. Debi in Vicksburg, MS. 🥰🥰
Sounds great! I lived in Seattle and Mossyrock, WA and had a bf of 4 years who was born and raised in Centralia, as well as living in Beaverton and other near Portland, Oregon, so I'm really familiar with that Washington/Oregon coast. Good luck when you move in March!
If you need a break from fast food consider checking out hospital cafeterias. Many small towns have free parking and the food served is basic but closer to tasting homemade.
One note on Safeway is that some prices are cheaper when you go into the store. The app charges more for things like pre-cut fruit if you're doing a pick up.
We have Winco as well and it has great prices. During canning season I buy tomatoes by the case for $0.88 a pound. Best deal anywhere. We always get 200 pounds of tomatoes. And that makes our tomatoes products for a whole year.
We moved from Norfolk, VA to Silverdale,WA then to Vancouver, WA in 2019. Yes, it's expensive to rent in Washington state. We do have several Dollar Tree stores as well as Fred Meyer (Kroger), Safeway, Winco, Grocery Outlet and Trader Joe's. We also drove cross country (military) and we're able to treat it like a road trip vacation. Drive safe and enjoy the scenery 🏔🧣🧤🧥
I noticed you were checking your exp dates on all of your pantry items, for what it's worth, I went thru my pantry (some years ago) and (w a sharpie) wrote on top and on the side, the bb or exp dates, now whenever I get new cans or whatever, I do it before putting them away. This way you can see and rotate easier. ❤
Same here!! It's so hard to read those expiration dates, and they can be anywhere on the packaging. I write it on the fronts of the cans/boxes/bags. For those items the Sharpie won't write on or that have clearly visible dates I store with the expiration date facing forward.
Northern Washington is so beautiful if you love trees, nature, and wildlife. Lots of lakes, mountain ranges, rivers, ocean, deer, bunnies, birds, and my favorite.... the rain forest!
@@libbyhardel1826 Honestly it's not. I live in norcal in humboldt, so in the middle of the redwood forest. The bears destroy our trash, the deer are constantly destroying cars/ killing people. the ocean is constantly trying to kill us and it's LOUD. The mountains are almost always on fire. Birds will attack you. And the forest... The redwood forest... If you have a fear of the dark, of tall things, of getting lost... of tunnels.. yeah dont come here. I was brough here as a child. It's HELL to get out as a single person. You cannot live on your own on the west coast as a single person.
Welcome to WA state! I was born and raised here. Only shop for products that are on sale at Safeway as they are pricey. Fred Meyer is your best bet if you don't live near a Walmart which aren't as frequent as they are in other states, or at least not where I live on the 'Eastside' of Seattle. Be careful shopping at Grocery Outlet as I've noticed the prices are more often than not more expensive than Fred Meyer. Psychologically you think you are getting a deal because it's a 'discount' store but not always. Avoid Haggen's as they are now owned by Albertson's/Safeway and are even more expensive than Safeway. In a future video please remind us of why you are moving to WA state since it is more expensive. BTW, your house in VA is HUGE!
lol 😂. I Live in Mobile Alabama it rains more here than their we come in 1st place as the rainiest place Well, now we know why they are "Sleepless in Seattle." They aren't No. 1. In fact, they aren't even close. There's always been an assumption that Seattle is the rainiest city in the country. in the United State, released by San Francisco-based WeatherBill, Inc., Mobile, Alabama, takes the top spot with more than 5 feet of rain annually. And you aren't surprised, especially after the in the past few days In fact, the Northwest doesn't enter the mix until Olympia, Washington, chimes in at No. 24. The southeast dominates the list. The northwest maintains its rainy day reputation with Olympia being the city with the most rainy days annually (63 days), but Mobile comes in second on the most rainy days list with 59 days. WeatherBill studied more than three decades of rainfall data from 200 National Weather Service stations in major U.S. cities, as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau, according to the report. 1. Mobile, Ala. (67 inches, 59 days) 2. Pensacola, Fla. (65 inches, 56 days) 3. New Orleans, La. (64 inches, 59 days) 4. West Palm Beach, Fla. (63 inches, 58 days) 5. Lafayette, La. (62 inches, 55 days) 6. Baton Rouge, La. (62 inches, 56 days) 7. Miami, Fla. (62 inches, 57 days)
The one thing I didnt do that I wish I had done was take photos around my town of the places I loved before I moved away...those are some memories I wish I had now..something you might consider before you move
Washington is gorgeous! My husband and Took a road trip vacation from CA up to Bend Oregon for a few days, then to Mt St Helens WA, and down along the Oregon coastline. Both states were absolutely stunning, and there's so much to do in the Pacific North West. We're retiring to Oregon or Washington in 3 to 4 years, and I can't wait!😁 Have a safe move and congratulations! As long as your fine with a lot of rain, your going to love it there!❤
I moved from Indiana to Los Angeles, CA and I was pretty overwhelmed. I moved my stuff into storage and flew. Many years later, I am now in Arizona with plans to move to Las Vegas in a year and even though I am looking forward to moving into this brand new complex, I hate packing. Luckily I am having the movers pack most of it and most is light weight and once I get to where I will be, my friend will help with the unpacking. (I am handicapped). Enjoy the trip.
We moved from MN to FL in 2023. We did a POD. We kept a ton of things, got rid of even more. I guess having a combined household does that. Anyway, we got to the last days and realized we still needed a Uhaul truck. We have 4 cats. We had a trailer with motorcycles, furniture and necessities. Then we stayed at a beach condo for a week before we closed on our home. We did drive seperately. Do not reco. However, I was in the truck and had one cat. Husband had the other cats who peed in their carriers and stunk up the car. We kept stopping to clean them and put down more pee pads, but omg. omg. omg. Just say we were happy to get done with that trip.
That's a very long drive for people, let alone driving with pets. I am glad that you all made it there ok. I could not take the heat in Florida though.
@AmyRaeVee I understand. I live in the Midwest and the cold gets to me too sometimes. But I couldn't take the heat in Florida, been there twice in the summer and it was too much.
Winco is the hands down best grocery store. Our routine is to stop at grocery outlet to look at deals, then head to Winco for the rest of our groceries. I also like to swing into Safeway and/or Fred Meyer for the sale items. Most of my meat is from those sales because I can get it cheaper that way than at Winco. I don’t even bother with Walmart groceries, it’s less selection and usually higher prices than Winco.
So not so much as taco Tuesday, but when you said it, made me think about what we do at our house. We cook Sunday though Thursday but for Friday we do Fend for yourself Friday that is were we eat up any leftovers that might be in the refrigerator, as a family of 4 at the time. There was never really enough leftovers for a whole nother meal but at least 1/2 servings. So Friday's we eat them up, then Saturday was sandwich Saturday. As a working parent it's hard to come up with new meals 5 days a week much less 7
We also do fend for yourself when it seems that the fridge is full. One thing we do, especially in the summer, is to grill several proteins on the weekend and then use them in different meals during the week.
Washington IS expensive. I'm a lifelong resident. Used to be a lot less expensive 20 years ago. Have a safe trip and I hope you love it here! Welcome to the state in advance! (You probably know this, but make sure you keep your electronics and filming/recording gear inside with you wherever you stay at night, if you don't sleep in your van.)
I'm so excited that you will be closer to me! I live in Oregon's Willamette Valley. Winco and Grocery Outlet are great places to shop as is Trader Joe's. I have two Dollar Trees and one Dollar General within a couple of miles from me. Fred Meyer and Safeway can be very expensive, but they have great produce. Super excited to see what your new future holds and all the new meals you will create. Be safe in your travels and know you are much appreciated and loved by this community!🤗
14:15 You'll LOVE Grocery Outlet, but I need an electric cart. Please know , I have found that Target is cheaper for some things. When I shop at Dollar Tree I use the Target app to be sure I'm getting the best deal.
Same!! I do this too. I still have staples I grab at Dollar Tree, but, I’m lucky enough to live less than five minutes from both, so it’s no big deal to hit them up in the same shopping trip.
@j.lynrademaker1651 Same here, the shopping centers with the two Dollar Trees in my town (I'm soooo blessed) are within fifteen minutes of Safeway and five minutes of Target and Food Maxx.
We live just outside of Vancouver Washington. It is beautiful here and the weather can be hard during the winter (Jan/feb) but the summer is so AMAZING!!! 1000% winco is the best overall grocery store here. I will shop the weekly ad at Safeway/albertsons but 90% of my shopping is winco. It’s not fancy but the prices are great and our store is clean and staff are helpful and kind. So excited for you, Michael and your puppers!!🎉🎉🎉
Have a safe trip! So happy you are taking your dogs' comfort into consideration as well. Makes my heart happy! Look forward to new videos once you're settled!
Wishing you all the best in your move, getting settled & making sure your dogs are comfortable. Can't wait for the new videos in the new (temporary) place. I'm sure you'll make the most of everything & everything will be great.
In regards to meal planning and using your freezer stock, honestly… organizing your freezer is helpful (I use labeled dollar tree bins) and also shopping your freezer before you do your weekly shop and planning around what you already have also helps. Nothing wrong with buying when on sale as long as you make a plan to use it before it goes bad.
I do this too! When I am meal planning I write down the items in my fridge I have to use (dairy, produce), my freezer I should use (frozen meat), and the pantry that I could use (pasta, rice etc). Then I work off that list of items to plan. Ideally I can make all or most of a meal or two, and only have to buy a couple things to complete a recipe!
Good luck on your move! We've done ME to KY, KY to DC, DC to VA, and most recently northern VA to western KY moves, each time moving less "stuff". If you are not already, you might consider using a whiteboard system to help keep track of your freezer and pantry foods. It's been immensely helpful for us to not overbuy and meal plan.
5:07 I LOOOOVE Facebook Marketplace! When I moved in with my mother, she had a fully furnished home. So I listed as much of my furniture on Facebook Marketplace as I could.
Hello. I just did that move last year from Tacoma Washington, to Bluefield West Virginia. I was born in Roseburg Oregon, raised in Everett Washington then moved to Tacoma. My first time coming out east was last year when I moved. I know the route and I know the dangers. Be careful and when you get to Washington I know this is funny to ask but hug a evergreen tree for me. I miss those the most. I hope your trip is a safe and fun one. Lots of love. side note WinCo is the cheapest store for food I found. I live off of EBT because I have to and that was the best place for deals. 200 a month was needed to be stretched.
We just moved from Va beach back home to eastern Washington in 2023. We knew we wanted to make the move in the summer. Those states Colorado , Nebraska, Wyoming get snow early in the fall. We have driven across the US twice, not something I would want to do again
Usually, going to multiple stores in Washington helps with costs. Fred meyers tends to have deals on meats. Winco is better on prices for bulk and other groceries Grocery outlet is also a great option Haggens is my go to for fresh fruit, you can sign up for an account for discounts for free, also I notice the signature brand gives another discount too Plus the dollar tree 🙌 Safe travels to you both. Also, when house hunting I would find out if it’s in a flood zone, and it does flood in Washington state
I don’t know what your weather is like in W Virginia but here in the NW it rains ALL OF THE TIME. Basically from September thru May. I live in NW Oregon. Safeway and Fred Meyer are expensive food stores, as far as my budget goes. Well stocked but expensive. You’ll want to find a Winco or a store such as this to compare to Food Lion. Grocery Outlet is an affordable grocery store but not consistent with products, you never know what you are going to find. Wishing you the best.
I lived in WA for 3 years while I served. It was beautiful and amazing. I wish it wasn't too expensive, I would've stayed there. Good luck in your new endeavor 💛
Congrats! I moved across country too, take your time and visit the national parks, it’s so worth it and I wish I spent more time doing that. One thing for me was the price shock, it was enough to make we want to move back but the wages and work benefits are a huge benefit. Stick in there and keep at it and it won’t be as big of a burden as it seems at first. Winters suck too, seems to last forever but when summer comes around you’ll be incredibly happy with your decision to move yet again lol. Stay warm, wear layers, and get ready for low utilities. I hardly pay a dime for heating and cooling, I crack open the windows and that does the trick in summer! Be prepared for driving in ugly weather depending on where you live. If you’re up really north, consider visiting Canada. Cheaper prices there with the conversation rate. Good luck!
Congratulations and good luck on your new start in Washington. I've lived here over 20 years and it's a great state that offers a lot of opportunities. Just one thing to understand before you get here. It sounds like you're moving to Northwest Washington, so make sure if your bringing a travel trailer or a moving trailer make sure it's locked up tight and maybe park your car behind it, so no one takes your stuff. It's beautiful on this side of the mountains but there's some folks here that like other people stuff, especially if your new to the area. Good luck and welcome!
Safe travels! I was raised in southwestern WA; it's beautiful country, and there are things I miss about it, but it's not where my heart lies. I lived there for about 17 years, before moving to Texas to be with the man I eventually married. I've been here almost 41 years now. I've been back to WA 3 times, last time was in 1999. Have a sister that still lives there, along with adult niece and nephews with their families, and various cousins, but I have no desire to live there again, even though my husband passed away in 2010. When I stepped off the plane in Dallas 41 years ago, I knew I was home, at last. I had returned to my Southern roots. I think we all have that place that will hold our hearts forever; maybe WA will be that place for you. I wish y'all much success, and happiness in your new location.
As someone who has lived in the PNW for almost her entire life, here are my tips: -Grocery Outlet is great if you're open to whatever. You do not want to go there with a set list and should generally avoid their produce. But you can find great deals on snacks, eggs, and fancy cheeses. -Winco is the perfect grocery store for staples. They have a great bulk section and very affordable produce. -Out of Safeway, Albertsons, and Fred Meyer, Freddie's is normally going to be the cheaper option and have more variety available. Avoid QFC. It's the same as Freddie's but more expensive. -Trader Joes is a good option for frozen foods and specialty items. You feel like it's a treat without the markup of the fancier stores.
Definitely look for a Winco. In Eastern Washington, Safeway and Fred Meyer are the most expensive grocers. (We don't have a Whole Paycheck aka Whole Foods in Spokane, haha.) Besides a good Mom-and-Pop small grocer who finds closeout or near-date foods Winco has the most consistently lower prices. Food is so crazy expensive in Washington which being near a major port city doesn't make sense. I'm a military wife so I understand the excitement and expenses of setting up a new home and wishing you the very best experiences on this adventure.
Food isn't taxed! Soda/energy drinks/bottled water etc. are subject to tax as is eating out but groceries don't have sales tax. When clothes or furniture shopping, making it down to Oregon is a good idea if you live closer to the border. Winco and Walmart are good options for inexpensive food. Living in WA can be expensive but there are ways to make it work. Other stores would be trader Joe's, Costco, and QFC
We live near Portland. I get about 60% of groceries at the Oregon City Winco and about 40% at Freddie’s in Canby. I hear people complain that Fred’s is expensive but I shop the sales and often find items less than Winco. I was disappointed with Grocery Outlet (Regular bananas for 85 cents while Fred’s are 75 for organic and 65 for regular). Our Canby Dollar Tree is great-clean and friendly people plus a freezer section, whereas the Oregon City one is messy and understaffed. Safeway has good loss leaders but I stopped going after getting overcharged too frequently. Fred’s also has clothes, electronics, garden, home, jewelry, pharmacy. I don’t know what WA state sales tax is-we are spoiled in Oregon with no sales tax but they get us on property tax! I moved 35 years ago from California and still am not used to the gray! Don’t mind the rain and when the sun comes out I really appreciate it. Almost forgot - I lover Trader Joe’s and the Asian store Uwajimaya but they further away. WA also has Uwajimaya. Really curious about what part of WA you are settling in.
I've moved 27 times in my life (Navy brat, Marine spouse) and I think having 9 days to drive across the continent is awesome! Good luck on your journey!
Rebecca and Michael, thank you for sharing your Virginia home with us. I'm praying that your cross country trip goes well, with no issues. Like others have said, I don't know why this video made me so emotional. I think we all relate so well with you. I'm looking forward to seeing your new videos and new home!
I don’t know why I’m feeling emotional about you moving. We won’t see that kitchen any more. But I wish you well for your big move. And don’t be too hard on yourself about new goals., you will get there eventually and even if you don’t magabe all of them , Kirk freezing meals and making meal plans, you’ll be fine. Happy moving.
Welcome to Washington Rebecca and Michael! I was born and raised on the western side of the state but we moved to the eastern side of the state about 4 years ago. Eastern and western Washington are like two completely different states! My only advice is to take your time and explore the different areas you may want to live. Everyone thinks of washington as the western side of the state but that is such a small piece of it and there is so much more to it. It really is a wonderful place to live!
We travel from Vancouver Island to shop at Winco! Have a safe and happy trip. 🎄 I sold my place in Mexico last year. I had all these ideas of bring everything to Canada. Gave away most, and left furniture for new owners. I was done.
I think the coffee pot would be something I packed up on literally the last day before leaving. LOL I hope your trip is easy and you all enjoy it!! One thing you mentioned was freezing meals instead of ingredients. About 6 months ago I started meal prepping. Got some food prep containers from Walmart. It makes dinner so much easier! I hope you include some meal prepping ideas when you start again, because I really enjoy your outside-the-box ideas. Take care and God bless!!
I made this trip cross country from Pennsylvania to Washington many years ago. My husband, two sons who were 3 and 4 yrs old. We took our clothes and just one car and then bought what we needed after we got there. Husband was in the military at the time and we didn’t have any family there. It took us three days. We drove from 7am to 7pm and stayed in hotels along the way. It was a beautiful trip. You will absolutely love seeing this great country along the way. I’m happy for y’all. Have a safe trip and enjoy life along the way. God bless y’all. ❤️🙏
Safe travels, Rebecca ❤ I can't wait to see how your dollar tree menus will work out. I hear Washington state is very expensive. Enjoy your cross-country❤❤❤ trip!
Yes we are expensive here. BUT you can go fresh water fishing and Salt water fishing , you can snow ski and water ski. and in the summer you can do both. we have all kinds of parks, camping, west side of Washington is Hi Tech with Amazon, Google, Etc. the East side of Washington is very Hot in the summer 100+ and very cold in the winter lots of snow. It depend what you want. we have programs most states don't have. I could keep going on. Unfortunately we have all the homeless people that OTHER state have bused here and left them hear. Dollar tree is $1.25 here. I could keep going on.
@@HazelHammond1505 come on, be honest, your state did not "leave" them there, your state welcomed them there. Like it or not your state is a hard-core liberal hellhole. Why do you think everything is so expensive? Hopefully that'll change soon, again.
@@HazelHammond1505California is a homeless haven. Everywhere I go in my town the homeless are sitting in front of stores. I try and do my shopping early because I don’t want to be out after dark.
@@HazelHammond1505I'm from that "OTHER" state...did you expect us to keep all 30 million. Contact Chlymydia (the original "Border Czar" who was a no show in the "OTHER" state) and her boss, along with their puppet handlers, for the complaint department on illegal immigrants. The "OTHER" state didn't create this shitshow!
That’s what you’d pay for a house here in WNC (or more), IF you can find one. You’re smart to take your time and treat it like a road trip. I missed why you’re moving out there. I didn’t know if it was your husbands work, or just because you want to. I’ve made many moves in my lifetime and love going different places. I always feel so good making a fresh start and exploring new areas. Im happy for yall.
Safe travels and welcome to Washington. If you are ever in the Bonney Lake area you are more than welcome to stop by. Also shopping wise Safeway if you are a Just for U member saves me on average about 30 dollars over Freddies, and Costco is really great to shop at.
We will be keeping each one of you in our hearts and prayers for a wonderful, safe and joy-filled journey to Washington state. I made the move from Lexington, Kentucky to Chewelah, Washington back in 2019. Virginia has also been one of my favorite states so I know you will miss it, like I also miss Kentucky. Washington state is so lucky to have you join their populous. I think you are moving more towards the west coast side, where I am on the far north-east side that is close to the British Columbia border. Know that wherever you and your family move, you will be loved! Safe travels and much love! 🚓
I'm pretty biased because I grew up in California and went to Washington for college, but you're going to LOVE IT! I think if you want land, Eastern Washington around Spokane or more Central like Yakima is going to be more your speed, but you might decide you love living near the coast. Lots of nice places on the Western side of the state other than Seattle like Vancouver and Bellingham. Enjoy your time exploring the PNW!
Bellingham area is very nice 😊 We used to visit friends there often as kids. (We live in West Coast area of British Columbia.) Safe and fun travels and welcome to the West Coast! Hope you love it
Always move closer to where your family lives. You will be so grateful in the case of an emergency or during tough times. Everything else is secondary.
I live in British Columbia, so I’ve been shopping in Washington state many times. Safeway, which we used to have in BC as well is on the pricier side. I like Fred Meyers. But WinCo is actually your best bet for prices. And that’s not just from me, but a friend who would go shopping there all the time. My daughter loves Stardew Valley.
I have moved many times. It was a habit of mine to do a walk through of the empty house just before we left and have a memory of each room. You reminded me of that as we toured your home with you. Have a safe journey and thanks for taking us with you.
Just moved from California to NC. The west coast lowest groceries are Walmart (neighborhood Walmart is the best) Grocery Outlet and Safeway is great to watch for sales. NC and CA are both beautiful but Washington is gorgeous. Congratulations!!!
Welcome to WA!! Excited you'll be close to me. As everyone said, WA state is overall more expensive, but lots of job opportunities too. Housing, groceries and gas are higher compared to other parts of the country. As everyone has said, Winco is the lower cost groceries. Groc Outlet is always a treasure hunt, great bargins. I am a Fred Meyer (Kroger) shopper myself. And do local farm stand produce in Sping/Summer. We have Dollar Trees but no Dollar Generals. Be sure to do one food food adventure at Taco Time. Safe travels and great adventures! 🎉
If it works out while you are on your trip, maybe stop at a dollar store here and there for a shop. I moved from Montana to Washington a couple years ago and looking forward to seeing your videos from The Evergreen State🌲
Welcome to Washington!! You should be here in the next couple of days. My husband is retired military and worked for the Department of Defense after he retired. Happy to have you in the neighborhood. Feel free to reach out once you arrive. If you end up where I think you are going to be there are lots of discount grocery stores. I've spent plenty of time all over the country. It may take a hot minute to get over the west coast cultural differences. I was glad to read Micheal has family here. You've already learned how expensive rentals can be. Prepare yourself for sticker shock if you decided to buy a house. Eeek!!
I live in WA state and if it weren’t for my husbands great job we wouldn’t stay here 🤷♀️ I’m a native Californian and I just want to go home. Welcome!
Good luck on the journey!! Thanks for taking us along with you and showing up the stops and cool things you see! Moving across country is definitely daunting. My husband and I moved from MD to AR which was not entirely planned or even thought of as a destination for our move but here we are! It was a lot on us as we did it in 2 days with our dog and cat. But the journey was amazing to see all the difference between the Mid Atlantic and the Midwest/South.
I’m from Maryland originally but I spent some time out in Olympia, WA when I was a younger. I miss the trees and waking up and seeing Mt. Rainier every day. People say it rains all the time(and it does) but also it can get very hot in the summer. I remember it being 102-103 degrees for a few days and the forest fires would be bad. It was pretty expensive when I was there in 2015 so I can’t imagine what the prices look like now. I got tired of the northeast winters so I now live in coastal Georgia and love it. Safe travels and I hope you enjoy the PNW!
I moved here this year and totally agree with you..we really do experience all 4 seasons moderately..I personally LOVED summer and Fall here... We are truly blessed , I call WA God's Country.
Thank you for taking us with you on this journey and for the house tour! The basement is such a cool space! I'm from Europe so it's super interesting for me to see how different houses look compared to what i'm used to. I can't wait to see how life will be for y'all in the new state and where you both will permanently settle. It's also so neat that you'll make a roadtrip out of it with multiple stops along the way to do and see new things. I hope y'all have a great journey with lots of new and interesting experiences. Safe travels! :)
I moved to Pennsylvania for six months. I wanted to live there so bad but I turned around in six months and came back to Alabama. I could not afford to live in Pennsylvania. Everything was so much higher you had to pay for all you had to pay for natural gas you had to pay for Power you had to pay for Cable And Internet that was $600 a month unreal I cried all the way back 12 hours. I was so disappointed
I'm watching your Christmas Crack "re-try" (today, 12/11/24) with the 12 options. I just wanted to say: ignore the negative comments you talked about in that video. (It is crystal clear that there are people who cannot feel good about themselves if they aren't doing whatever they can to try to damage another person!) You are awesome, Rebecca! You are genuine, kind, helpful--and most of all, you are very relatable. People flinging criticism at you are just bitter and hateful--not for any reason at all toward the people they heap criticism on; it was there before they watched your video. (I do believe there are ways to set up a "blocked words" tool in TH-cam, so that you can limit those. Additionally, even though I do think it would be overwhelming to try to keep up with approving comments, you may just need that. (Negativity is just too much for an empath! Perhaps there is even a great high school kid who would love the job of reviewing and blocking negative comments for you at a great price, i.e. a flat rate per day. It could give them cash they desperately need and get that negativity out of your view.) There were times when I was a teenager that I tried so hard to find work to earn spending money. I didn't have a car, and there was no such option to "work from home." I would have felt honored to have such a neat job as reviewing comments and blocking things that aren't helpful. (I know you are fine with suggestions and tips, but that doesn't mean you have any obligation whatsoever to allow the types of hateful comments you mention. You don't owe your viewers that level of access to the work you do!) Keep your joyful light shining! The world needs it!
Winco rocks! WA is more expensive, but our minimum wage is $20 an hour. and there is no income tax or taxes on groceries. I live on a budget in WA and it is definitely do-able. Safe travels!!!
@@Blondzilla77 Wow, I am surprised! The cost of living in Kitsap county can't be very different from Pierce or King county. Well I hope that changes....like yesterday.
Safeway is expensive. That is what we have where I live. I try to stick to the for U deals in the app. We do have a grocery outlet but their prices seem to have gone up too. Our only other option is a local IGA, which I like but it is very expensive. We do have a Walmart with some very limited frozen foods, etc. but I won’t shop at Walmart. I look forward to seeing what you find in your new area.
I live in Washington ( born and raised), my Mom lives in Virginia. Be ready for sticker shock on groceries, gas, even thrift stores, it’s very expensive here. If the house is cheaper, be wary of neighborhood could be ghetto, crime ridden. Don’t rent in Tacoma, Everett, area. I shop Freddie’s, Trader Joe’s, Target and Costco for bulk/ cheaper option but still quality. Dollar tree and Winco are low quality and not best options here.
I loved Winco! Sorry you don't have good ones where you are. We lived south of Tacoma. I will admit sometimes the fresh fruits and veggies could go bad faster but the savings on their brands was really good and the selection is WAY better than it is in KY!
I’ve been living in N.C. for my entire life (with the only exception being 5 years I lived in Indiana for college) and my entire family lives here. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to leave just based on that fact, but if I could Washington would be my DREAM place to live. The thought of that drive and moving animals/furniture that far is so scary even theoretically, so seeing you delve into the process is so nice and insightful!! 💕
I live in Vancouver WA (the biggest suburb of Portland OR).. Winco is the cheapest grocery store. New Seasons is the most expensive. Welcome to the rain 🌧️ 😅
Fully understand. We moved to ME from VA. Our mortgage in VA was $1200 and our mortgage in ME is $2780. Never realized VA was as cheap as it was 😂 Safe travels!
I live by myself now and I still batch cook and freeze things in containers that hold about two servings. It proved to be very helpful during the early part of the covid lockdown. Also, my daughters came over to the house and "shopped" my freezer when they couldn't get groceries
🤩 omg!! I'm in WA so exciting!! WinCo is great, they accept debit only but it's definitely cheaper here. There is also a very extensive Asian market scene here ( Tacoma and Seattle at least) Definitely find a doctor and ensure you keep tabs on your vitamin d intake bc it's common for people moving here to get deficient. It's actually not as much rainfall as people claim, it's a lot of sprinkles. We don't get buckets like the south can most of the time. Seasonal affective disorder aka sad lol
Agreed, the rain is totally overblown here. Lots of mist, mizzel, drizzle and sprinkles. You get used to it. It’s why we aren’t often caught with an umbrella but prefer a rain jacket.
The rain might be oversold, but the dark, damp and wind are difficult to adjust to. I think more so since you're moving in the winter. Long, dark days the closer you are to the Canadian border. But the reverse is true in the summer!
As someone who lives in rural PA, and just has me and my partner and dog to worry about, I feel you on the food part. I generally plan out the month, for food, so at least I can have the ideas there, then know what to make (helps with the burnout of deciding what to make some, as that’s been a big issue for me lately), but I was starting to bulk make some stuff, where I could can leftovers, so we could have “dump and go” meals. I want to start that up again, to save money and food waste, let alone start saving to get some fruit trees come spring, to plant. Can’t wait to see what you have in store come new year and new state!
Safeway is expensive, but have a few deals now and then. Fred Meyer, Winco, Grocery Outlet, Dollar Tree, Whole Foods (very expensive BUT their store brands are great and competitive with other store brand prices, Walmart, lots of small Latino grocery stores with great prices on spices, farmers markets! And lots of local farms you can buy eggs from, Costco, Sam’s club….lots of options. A large food bank system, many food and senior charities one can volunteer at too. You will love it here ! ❤😊
Go to WinCo when you get to WA! As a budget foodie myself I love it. Some of the consistently lowest grocery prices plus bulk bins with beans, rice, pasta, baking supplies, spices, etc. Enjoy your epic road trip; the West welcomes you!
Oh and let's not forget the scenery and the amazing mountains. From where we live we can see Mt Hood and Mt Rainer on a clear day. I don't care how long I live here it will always take my breath away 💙🏔
You had a beautiful home!! We are home searching right now but need to find something that fits 4 adults and one toddler as our little family is planning to live with my brother and sister in law to save on bills. We would be so lucky to find a house like yours 😂 I wish you guys all the best on your journey! Can’t wait to see the temporary digs ❤
Have you ever discussed WHY you are moving across country? Inquiring minds want to know!!!! have fun on the road!
Michael was in the navy and grew up in Washington state. The Navy brought him to Virginia and then when he got out he was working as a contractor for the Navy. We are moving to be closer to his family and because I visited Washington one year and ever since have dreamed of ending up in Washington state one day.
@@DollarTreeDinners thx for that, you also didn't mention if there is a dollar tree/genreal near your new locale. hope sos!!!
There are plenty of dollar trees but I don’t think there are many dollar generals that way :)
Yes she has.
My hubby is retired navy and we did 1 year in Bremerton, I loved the weather except for February. It's so green and gorgeous there.
There are two in Dallas, Texas that I know of. Poped up in the last 5 to 10 years.
Yep, we've got WinCo here in OKC too. I haven't gone but my daughter says its prices are good.
WinCo is in Texas and Oklahoma
That's my main shopping hub :D It takes me an hour to get there and then a half hour to get home cuz i take the bus :D
I’ve lived in Wa state my whole life and it is soooo expensive. Especially if you live within 50 miles of Seattle.
We don't have sales tax on groceries in Washington. We go for clothes and other items.
All of Washington doesnt tax food
@@Connie-u6p none of the west coast has food tax. West coast, not just Washington and oregon. Cali too. West coast vibes.
Someone I know lives in California close to the border and go to Costco and Walmart to shop for major shopping. Saves a lot.
Vancouver Washington here 👋👋
Live in Vancouver, work in Tigard, Oregon.
My niece and nephew are both getting a jar of the Onion Salt with their Christmas loot this year.♥
21 spice salute? from trader Joe's is excellent 👌
Omg I wish that were cheap I guess it's all perspective here in the Northeast that's what we paid back in the 80s
Yes! I live in Kitsap and it is ridiculous. Luckily we bought our house 11 years ago, had we not we wouldn't be able to afford it here.
A lot of time we go into grocery stores to their deli for a hot meal to go when we travel.
That's a great idea!! Tfs!
I agree. That is a great idea. Also budget friendly.
Hello from Richland.
What a small world.
If you need a break from fast food consider checking out hospital cafeterias. Many small towns have free parking and the food served is basic but closer to tasting homemade.
I LOVE my hospitals food! It's so hard to resist just swiping my badge because it's always delicious
Great tip!
Agreed! My hospital serves all vegetarian fare-it’s so delicious!
Safeway is super expensive but if you shop there, you must get the app and clip the coupons every Wednesday.
One note on Safeway is that some prices are cheaper when you go into the store. The app charges more for things like pre-cut fruit if you're doing a pick up.
Would be really cool to hear about how you adjust to grocery shopping in Washington with the different stores!
I heard Winco is a cheaper grocery store it's in Washington state.
WA native- never heard of Winco before I moved east. Grocery Outlet is probably the best bet.
We have both. Winco is by far superior. I live in Spokane Washington
We have Winco here in AZ too. Best go to store around for price and freshness.
Winco is the best! I live in eastern Wa
That's such a great idea!!
I do the same. So much easier. I've also done this for my mom. She can see it way better
Same here!! It's so hard to read those expiration dates, and they can be anywhere on the packaging. I write it on the fronts of the cans/boxes/bags. For those items the Sharpie won't write on or that have clearly visible dates I store with the expiration date facing forward.
@TallyDrake I write on a piece of masking tape and tape to the front of can or pkg. in those instances 😊
Northern Washington is so beautiful if you love trees, nature, and wildlife. Lots of lakes, mountain ranges, rivers, ocean, deer, bunnies, birds, and my favorite.... the rain forest!
That sounds divine!
@@libbyhardel1826 Yes, google photos of Washington rain forest Quinault....It's so amazing and beautiful!
I would love live with all of those things
We have real mountains on this side of the Continental Divide. You will love them!
I have friends in different parts of Washington. I hope you enjoy the rain, and the ferries there. Travel smart. Welcome to the west coast.
Only the west side is rainy. The central and eastern part of the state has a lot of desert and is very dry.
lol 😂. I Live in Mobile Alabama it rains more here than their we come in 1st place as the rainiest place
Well, now we know why they are "Sleepless in Seattle."
They aren't No.
WeatherBill studied more than three decades of rainfall data from 200 National
Weather Service stations in major U.S. cities, as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau, according to the report.
1. Mobile, Ala. (67 inches, 59 days)
2. Pensacola, Fla. (65 inches, 56 days)
3. New Orleans, La. (64 inches, 59 days)
4. West Palm Beach, Fla. (63 inches, 58 days)
5. Lafayette, La. (62 inches, 55 days)
6. Baton Rouge, La. (62 inches, 56 days)
7. Miami, Fla. (62 inches, 57 days)
The one thing I didnt do that I wish I had done was take photos around my town of the places I loved before I moved away...those are some memories I wish I had now..something you might consider before you move
That’s a great idea!
Washington is gorgeous! My husband and Took a road trip vacation from CA up to Bend Oregon for a few days, then to Mt St Helens WA, and down along the Oregon coastline. Both states were absolutely stunning, and there's so much to do in the Pacific North West. We're retiring to Oregon or Washington in 3 to 4 years, and I can't wait!😁
Have a safe move and congratulations!
We love the PNW. We moved from Nevada to North Idaho in 2018 and haven’t looked back. Safe travels and enjoy the journey. ❤❤❤
@@scook5599 I couldn't take the cold in MN anymore. Love it here for growing food and going to beaches.
Why am I so heartbroken?
*Sending good vibes for a safe and joyful journey 🙂
So not so much as taco Tuesday, but when you said it, made me think about what we do at our house. We cook Sunday though Thursday but for Friday we do Fend for yourself Friday that is were we eat up any leftovers that might be in the refrigerator, as a family of 4 at the time. There was never really enough leftovers for a whole nother meal but at least 1/2 servings. So Friday's we eat them up, then Saturday was sandwich Saturday. As a working parent it's hard to come up with new meals 5 days a week much less 7
I do fend for yourself every day! I eat out 90% of the time lol
Fellow Oregonian-in Salem!
I’m an Oregonian too - Troutdale! Welcome to the PNW!
Although the Grocery Outlet jingle is an earworm! *sings* "grocery outlet, bargain market..."
@cynthiafrench1 yeah, I can hear it now 🤣😆😆
Have a safe trip! Welcome to the Pacific Northwest
I live in Washington State and it's so beautiful. I hope you love it here as much as I do. Welcome!
❤
This is great advice. I plan to reorganize my freezer along the lines you suggested.
I might try the whiteboard system, nothing else I tried worked. Thanks!😊
Winco is better on prices for bulk and other groceries
Grocery outlet is also a great option
Haggens is my go to for fresh fruit, you can sign up for an account for discounts for free, also I notice the signature brand gives another discount too
Plus the dollar tree 🙌
Safe travels to you both.
Also, when house hunting I would find out if it’s in a flood zone, and it does flood in Washington state
Have a SAFE , uneventful trip. Can’t wait to see the videos from the trip & your move. My BFF lives in Washington State.
Washington is a beautiful state. Hope you enjoy.
As someone who has lived in the PNW for almost her entire life, here are my tips:
-Grocery Outlet is great if you're open to whatever.
I love Winco.
Definitely Costco
Have a safe trip to the PNW ❤ I love that you and your partner (and your pups 🥰) will get to savor the journey westward together!
Grocery outlet sells a lot of things near pull date. Always check the dates
Congratulations! Have a great and safe journey trip ahead 😊❤!!!
I sold my place in Mexico last year.
Hey girl - Becky and her mom from acre homestead have winco shopping vlogs !
I think they are moving to be closer to Michael's children 😊
Thank you. I was just curious, since it’s such a long distance to move. It sure is pretty out there!
Hope you love it
Good luck with your move. Prayers for easy transition.
Good luck on the journey. Hope it is a successful move for your family.
Sometimes Smart & Final.
SAFE Travels...Wishing you the BEST with the move
I’m from Maryland originally but I spent some time out in Olympia, WA when I was a younger. I miss the trees and waking up and seeing Mt. Rainier every day. People say it rains all the time(and it does) but also it can get very hot in the summer. I remember it being 102-103 degrees for a few days and the forest fires would be bad. It was pretty expensive when I was there in 2015 so I can’t imagine what the prices look like now. I got tired of the northeast winters so I now live in coastal Georgia and love it. Safe travels and I hope you enjoy the PNW!
I live in Washington...I Love our 4 seasons here😊❤
I moved here this year and totally agree with you..we really do experience all 4 seasons moderately..I personally LOVED summer and Fall here...
It could give them cash they desperately need and get that negativity out of your view.)
There were times when I was a teenager that I tried so hard to find work to earn spending money.
The minimum wage varies by city based on the cost of living. Seattle is $20, but other areas are lower.
@@shellyturner2766 I didn't realize that! Can you post a link?
We live in kitsap and minimum wage is definitely not $20. I think that's just the big cities like Seattle or Tacoma maybe.
There is also a very extensive Asian market scene here ( Tacoma and Seattle at least)
Definitely find a doctor and ensure you keep tabs on your vitamin d intake bc it's common for people moving here to get deficient.
Oh, the Dr's. Set-up! What an eye opener!
There's a great Asian and Mexican market up in Bellingham too!
The rain might be oversold, but the dark, damp and wind are difficult to adjust to. I think more so since you're moving in the winter. Long, dark days the closer you are to the Canadian border. But the reverse is true in the summer!
It helps to eat as much locally grown produce, and locally harvested honey as you can. For some reason it helps. Oh, and stock up on vitamin D!
Washington is the best state to change up your coffee game
Safeway is expensive, but have a few deals now and then. Fred Meyer, Winco, Grocery Outlet, Dollar Tree, Whole Foods (very expensive BUT their store brands are great and competitive with other store brand prices, Walmart, lots of small Latino grocery stores with great prices on spices, farmers markets! And lots of local farms you can buy eggs from, Costco, Sam’s club….lots of options. A large food bank system, many food and senior charities one can volunteer at too. You will love it here ! ❤😊
Yes, be safe
Go to WinCo when you get to WA! As a budget foodie myself I love it. Some of the consistently lowest grocery prices plus bulk bins with beans, rice, pasta, baking supplies, spices, etc. Enjoy your epic road trip; the West welcomes you!
Yay!! Congratulations ❤🎉… and safe travels to the PNW! Thanks for taking us along on your journey ☺️
Oh and let's not forget the scenery and the amazing mountains. From where we live we can see Mt Hood and Mt Rainer on a clear day. I don't care how long I live here it will always take my breath away 💙🏔
That’s not expensive at all… 1 bedroom and den apartment in Vancouver is 2800-4K…. So.. lol you’re blessed you get a full house for that.
