Why the British thought the Russian authorities would cooperate with them at all in the first place is astounding. The entire charade of interviewing in a Chernobyl service hospital that was probably never used and rather out of the way is rather telling. Plus they never did really identify the man they supposedly questioned.

I admire his son and wife because they are realists, knowing full well that because of who the murderers are they will never go to jail, but still wanted a certain kind of justice.

The scary thing is they could have given him something that would have killed him quickly and been untraceable but they purposely gave him something that would kill him slowly and make him suffer and let everyone know who did it to him. It was about sending a message.

No I'm pretty sure in the part of the video were they discovered it was the two russians at the table next to where he was seated. They did mention that it was supposed to take affect immediately, but somehow didn't.

This was actually a really good documentary. I had no idea about the details regarding his death.
There was an excellent mini-series, starring David Tennant, I highly recommend it. I loved it and this documentary.

It's absolutely insane that all of this radioactivity that was detected was done to find a crime not for public safety, imagine how many people were contaminated by this stuff. I remember thinking how beautiful he looked in the photo. He looked so peaceful, it didn't seem like he could die soon afterward. All we heard in the US was that he was critically ill, then he was dead. Nothing about his suffering or his GI tract being completely delaminated and raw, he wasn't able to eat or swallow, he could barely speak and was in dreadful pain. In my youth I had repeated strep infections in my throat, and 60 years later I can remember how excruciating it was to swallow my own saliva, I needed a cup near me to spit in. But still you must swallow, you just can't stop swallowing no matter how much it hurts. And it was only my throat. It must all have been torture.

It seems like he was still active working as intelligence officer against the Russians after he fled. Why was he meeting with intelligence folks if he truly wanted a new identity and life? This all doesnt add up.

When you live in a world of lies and secrets , you must keep all options open. How can you live with yourself after having made someone suffer so much?! Never mind even murder someone. You can’t be human. You can’t be human if you can do something like that. His killers probably rationalized it by telling themselves that with such a lethal dose he would die quickly; but he didn’t, he suffered terribly and I do wonder how they live with that knowledge. One if those two even introduced him to his son as uncle Sasha, knowing that he had just killed him. Sad for all involved, but specially for the perpetrators (both the one who was also poisoned and the surviving one) whose karma is unthinkable and unimaginable.

Very good doc. The unrelenting detectives of Scotland Yard get high marks. The judge is amazing in his candid remarks indicting the Russian FSB and Putin himself. In any murder case the one behind it is as guilty as his footmen who actually carry the murder out. This has been exposed and this doc follows it right up to the final court decision. If it was the Mossad going after justice I would bet the two murderers and also the mastermind would eventually disappear or be kidnapped and brought to stand before a court. Instead, at least, the real story is out which is very ugly and incriminating. The FSB may have got their pound of flesh, but they're exposed for what they are. There may no longer be a Soviet Union but little seems to have improved. Like all men, these murderers will have to meet their maker and in that there is ultimate final justice above anything mankind has a hand in.

There is more to it then just what is said here. Almost has to be. He was given a new name and a passport by the UK. He was in contact and had regular meetings with the guy that confirmed his identity in the hospital. The MI6 guy. He was a high ranking officer in the fsb in Russia handling very sensitive info.
In the cold war they used to be named defectors. He gave the British an inside look in to the fsb.
