You're the Sheldon of flashlights! I think the actor stole your personality for Big Bang Theory. Subbed, but keep it coming... perhaps more Amazon available products and sub $100 unless an unearthly value? Great work, Sir. Thanks.
I have the MF04 xhp35hi led at 2416 meters. I can tell you for a fact that it will not shine half that distance. The beam at 2700 lumens is simply too weak to go that far. I have it and it does not do it. So I modified it with a XHP70.2 2P 1A DEDOMED LED @ 12v x 8amp + water cooled. Now it is still less than the GT.
Matt, I know you didn't have both at the time of this review, but a lot of us would REALLY like to see a comparison review of BLF GT70 vs. Astrolux MF04S. That would be a more direct comparison. The Astrolux MF04 should be compared to the original BLF GT... (I think you already did that somewhere)
It´s a pity you just had the MF04s for this video, I ordered the MF04 and would love to see a comparison between that model and the BLF GT side by side. From what I understand the MF 04 out throws quite significantly the MF04s and probably the BLF GT too.
I just got my MFO4 today and love it. Use the coupon and it is by far the better buy. The BLF-GT is nice but they sent me a very warm, 4K LED and I was very unhappy they did that. I was expecting the Cool White, like in the videos but got a warm thrower and it's not as impressive as the cool white, also, they charged 58 bucks extra for the strap, that also came with a very flimsy case and head cover, as if right off the sidewalk of Bangkok, both good ideas but they are worth maybe 10 dollars, not 58, to send them back, cost 130. so I am not happy about that whole purchase other than it is a very well made light, but a "Budget light"? It's not that. This Astrolux is the way to go, 90% the same but way less expensive, got it in a week. Mine is not an "S" model, mine has no dome, so it may be throwing even better than the one tested here. I got the Cool White and love it. Side by side, I could go with either one, but I would chose the Astrolux, with the coupon, it's about 100 bucks less and you can order cool white and get it, and they give you the five dollar strap with the light. They get how to treat customers. These big lights need a strap and you should not be charged over 50 bucks to get it. These lights are great out on the water, looking for markers just got way easier and safer. I'll use them both and won't care witch one I pick up, both fantastic lights.
Apples and Oranges. A more direct comparison would be: Astrolux MF04 VS The BLFGT. The "S" version of the Astrolux is a higher lumen, but shorter throw flashlight.
The direct comparison shows, how difficult it is to see objects with the Astrolux. The beam on the BLF is much more clean and enlightens objects better.
@ASG, Can you explain the difference between the XHP35HI and XHP70.2 LED’s? I see that option is available on both the Astrolux MF045 and the BLFGT Flashlights. Thank you!
FYI......Problem solved. It appears the regular 18650 3500mAh 2.7V is not sufficient to operate the MF04s. I obtained the Samsung 30Q 18650 15A from an E-cig store, used a space magnet as the button of the flat top battery, and was able to get the MF04s to operate the way it should and stay on.
Stumble across ya a bit ago, you're a hoot to watch and HUGELY informative, as is this video :) Have you had thought about more EDC's, like those that take 18650s, maybe 21700s if they exist?
I like the build of the BLF more... but I like the light output much better with the Astrolux. It appears to me to be the same brightness but double the size (if that makes since) I may have missed it but what was the distance? Thx!
Matt, i have a coast polysteel 600. Its a decent off the shelf led light. It runs on 4 aa bats in a holder. Focusable optic on the business end. Im using nimh batteries in it right now, but was wondering if i could use an 18650 or other lithium battery to hopefully get better run time and maybe a little brighter as well. Any ideas to take this light from decent to awesome?
Can you make a comparative MF04 vs MF04s please :) ? I want to buy MF04 or MF04s. In this moment I have Thorfire S70s (very good flashlight, but i want more range... +1km)
Well. I do have that light. However I cant say how they compare. I was working on my review of it and I set it down on the shop bench with the batteries in it. Came back the next day and found it had burnt up one of the cells. I can't say for sure, but I suspect it's a driver issue. If the cells had been put in wrong I would have known instantly. Other than that it was an amazing light. Great user interface.
Out of the mfo4 and the mf04s which would you recommend? Is there a major visible difference in throw? And also, is it possible to fit protected cells in the mf04? I live in Sweden and it seems quite hard to find unprotected cells for sale here and banggood isn't even shipping them here..
You really should use high drain unprotected cells for high output flashlights. Google "eu nkon" - it's a dutch store that ships lithium batteries to Sweden for reasonable prices, they sell the "Samsung INR18650-30Q 3000mAh - 15A button top" which is a popular choice. Just be careful when you are using unprotected lithium cells (know what you are doing!), use a good quality charger that will keep track of temperatures and terminate voltages correctly (max 4.20v).
Banggood is basically legit, but extremely slow shipping from China. Also pray you don't have to return it. Return shipping to China is absolutely out of the question. Best to buy the Mateminco MT35 + version from Amazon. It's the identical light, very similar price and it can be easily returned.
Monster vs Monster!!! It's hard to say who win.. Astrolux claimed 6000 lumens with 1.5KM throw but BLF GT claimed 7500 lumens with 1.4KM throw. Which one actually has the real claim?? Lumens vs Throw, which one will you choose?

It could be either, but to me that sounds like a driver malfunction. If you can power the light on and jump straight to turbo and it does not shut off it is probly not the battery. Some times a batter protection circuit can case a problem with the light shutting off, but typically if you can jump to turbo and run it that is not the problem.

All XHP70.2 have domes from factory, so the MF04S and BLF GT70. Maybe hardly visible due to the giant reflector and therefor big distance between the front glass and the actual LED. The regular MF04 and BLF GT have a XHP35 HI LED, these are indeed domeless.
