Having watched this I find it extraordinary to be poured over and looked at in such a clinical way, it was what it was when it was and every decade has moved on...all recollections will diverge everybodys' memory of times past is different. Having gone there from about 1969 I largely agree with what has been said, however there were other London pubs that had so called straight bars, The Wheatsheaf in Uxbridge Road and the Elephant in Lewisham where you had to run the gauntlet through a straight bar to get to your bit. The bar at RVT changed in the late 70's and yes before that the bar was the stage also there was a trapeez where at the end of the night a queen would swing and sing Rule Britannia and There Will Always be an England and other patriotic songs...this died out late 70's and I can remember a night there where this was being sung to complete silence or hissing...very unpatriotic but that's how times had changed I think the other thing to say is that if you were what was called a West End queen it was very exciting and daring to go south of the river for what was hoped to be rough trade, only to be disappointed to find they were camp too!!
