  • Wetherspoons Large Full English Breakfast, it's cheap but just how good is the 'Spoons' breakfast, and does it live up to the hype? We all love a good Fry Up to start the day and breakfast is said to be the most important meal of the day. So here's my review of The Wetherspoons Large Full English Breakfast.

Love a spoons brekky, filling and really tasty. People knock it, methinks it's just snobbery. Excellent value for money. Re the sauce sachets, pre Covid they had small metal 'carrying baskets' (same idea as Milkmens crates) that held the cruet set and four bottles of sauce (HP/Heinz Ketchup/Mayo and Tartare sauce - I think it was) . Now they're using sachets and those paper salt and pepper thingys.

Menu hack: You can order any of the 'add' items on their own. Amongst many things possible with that is having 'add chips' instead of chips, and I just noticed that the small vegetarian breakfast costs £3.55, but if you make it off the side orders, it'll only cost you £2.85 and you get 2 hash browns and 2 halves of tomato! Bargain! Small breakfast also works out at £2.90 saving 65p and with 2 hash browns and slices of bacon. There are savings to be had on most of the breakfasts and you can create many main meals yourself too! Big saving on beans on toast by ordering toast with beans on the side, you even get preserves thrown in for free!! :)

Next you go to spoons order at the bar and you can have things how you liked cooked, I work at wetherspoons and lots of customers ask for crispy bacon or scrambled eggs and it’s no problem to change it :) also at the bar you customise your order and make changes, so if you didn’t want mushrooms you could swap for an extra bit of bacon! (They are in process of enabling you to do this via the app!) And finally- to truly get your moneys worth with the coffee, as you leave ask for a takeaway cup so you grab one last coffee as you go and take it away with you :)

The good thing with Wetherspoons is you get exactly what you pay for so no complaints really, while there are other places that will charge double or more for the exact same quality of food. Wetherspoons every time plus they are more comfortable than a supermarket cafe!

Anybody seen the "London Gentlemen's Club" Family Guy sketch of the 3 blokes taking turns coughing and clearing their throats louder and louder each time while they read the paper? That's what the outtake at the end reminds me of 🤣
Wetherspoon is amazing. It's obviously not the best, but you always know what to expect at a good price. Great review as always.

I'm from Italy and when I went to the UK in 2018 i stayed in a small city near London with a friend of mine who's a local and we went, after a night out, to get a full English breakfast at a Wetherspoons, and let me tell you, not only it was an amazing "drunk food" but it was also cheap, filling and delicious, and i loved it! I would love to go again after the COVID situation slows down a bit and we can travel safely again!
    Cheers from Italy 😄🥰

Massive supporter of 'spoons. Almost impossible to knock. For the money, ridiculously good value right now. Bell's whisky, or a pint of ruddles beer for 99p ! There's good Wetherspoons ...just look out for them. A nice option food-wise is the hot and spicy chicken. Think of nando's and you won't be disappointed. 👌

Full English really ought to include tomatoes in my opinion, although weirdly the vegetarian options do. I’m also not a fan of portabellos on a breakfast - normal button or white mushrooms are more tender. All-in-all this looks decent for the money though.
You have to consider that Wetherspoon have huge buying power compared with independent pubs and restaurants so it’s very hard for them to compete on price. It would be impossible for a small establishment to sell a comparable breakfast for that price and make any money as they don’t have the economies of scale. The only way they could come close would be to use extremely cheap and nasty ingredients. Wetherspoon even buy in their beer for far far less than I would be able to do if I ran a small pub or bar. For example, their real ales at 1.99 are ludicrously cheap. I’ve even seen Jaipur on there before, which would cost at least 4.50 in most pubs. No way could a local pub charge so little for such a high quality beer.
I completely agree that people are worse off than they have ever been and COVID shouldn’t be seen as their ‘fault’; but I also think that the hospitality industry probably is largely doing its best to keep prices down. In a sense Wetherspoon’s power - alongside other companies like McDonald’s - has only gotten stronger since COVID, as they have far more resilience than others, which means that they will probably continue to increase their lead over smaller competitors. Whether people are happy to accept this or not is up to them.

I used to go to Wetherspoons in Newark almost every Sunday morning for their large breakfast, as I think they're so nice and great value. Unfortunately I've not been since the first lockdown last year but I'm really ready for another after watching this lol ! Great as always Lee 👌🏻

Great review again Lee, I totally appreciate what you say about the prices, it is due to the economies of scale that Weatherspoons get as a massive chain, other chains should follow suit!

That actually looked fantastic & you did a great review of the venue, food and all the semantics entailed.
The Breakfast there looked 10/10 you had that’s on the contents, coffee with refills and price’s & environment which was all in point as far as I would’ve said.
I have a brother down in Leeds so I might try this place next time I’m in Leeds?
    Great review.

Hi Lee, Wetherspoons' do charge more in certain places, especially around London. Most big pub chains do the same, this due to higher labour costs especially around London, and rents they have to pay for prime locations.

Sunday morning got the veggie variant of the breakfast at the very busy Wetherspoons in Liverpool Lime Street station (nowhere else close by that does hot, cooked breakfast on the sabbath AFAIK).
It was only £3.70 or so and really pretty good; hot, tasty and filling.

Hi Lee! As I will say it depends on which one you visit. The two where I am can’t serve their meals warm enough. I can’t complain about the price or amount on a big breakfast. I usually go for the smaller traditional as the big one is too large. The bottomless coffee or tea is a great thing they do. The ones I have visited had their sauces in bottles every time which is easier 9 for me as eggs not runny enough

I worked in Wetherspoons in Heathrow T4 around 2003-2004 part time, absolutely loved it, was non stop and the food was great. Once served the roadies of The Darkness a shit load of Bloody Marys at 7-8am! Back then, i had no clue who they were until my manager told me but they were fun. On an early shift I always had a bacon sandwich, evening shift..chicken alfredo or ham/egg/chips, burger etc. We would regulary serve tikka masala at 6:30-7 as it was airside so anything goes! Loved my time there, it was well paid compared to hotels in the local area, always fed and watered at end of night. Overall we had a great team and was voted no.1 in the UK during that time!

The cooked vegan brekkie in 'spoons', hard to beat, plus the cheap coffees & teas. I know, have tried (and failed) to find a cheaper vegan brekkie option when out...and if you fancy a pint with it...go ahead! 😀 It's now gone up to £3.70 (from £3.35) but come on...recently had one in the Barrel Vaults in Kings X, you try and get a similar in central London for that price...plus you get to sit in (generally) nice surroundings and stay for as long as you want to. Lots of vegan options now for us.
Never forget one time, was in the one in Victoria Stn (London) and for some odd reason started talking to my partner at the table about Tim Martin, the next minute, we look to the bar and guess who was sitting there....Tim Martin (lol)...our jaws dropped....LOLOLOL!!!
Been a fan of 'spoons' for some time, had some great times in there, over the years.

The only little down side for me is I prefer a little bit softer egg than what they usually serve and wish they served it all day instead of stopping it at 11.30 in the morning, but on the whole a score of a good 9 out of 10.

Looked brilliant for the price too.
I have to say we’ve only been to Spoons for breakfast at Birmingham airport or if we’re at the NEC.
I just looked on their app and the large breakfast in Birmingham airport is £11.75 and the coffee with refills is £3.15 so total of £14.90 - yep a lot dearer but then they must have to pay stupid rent prices.
Got to say we always ask for burnt bacon and the really do a great job. 👍🏻😋

  • @gbphil

You need to start trying hotels, you can often eat as a walk-in for a reasonable price and that includes unlimited portions. I ate at the England Training Ground’s St George’s Hilton some years ago and that includes a full selection of Cereals, Juices, Pastries, Breads, Cheeses, Cooked Meats, Fruit, Hot Drinks in unlimited quantities and a Full English with the option of Kippers, Haddock, Eggs Benedict or Porridge. That was £12.50 and I’m sure other venues would be cheaper still. Even Supermarkets or Weatherspoon’s aren’t that great value if you factor in a full breakfast rather than part breakfast and somewhere like the Hilton, you get a large compliment of Chefs rather than Cooks to make it for you and possibly cooked to order.

It's a good breakfast if u don't like something... for me it's beans and tomato. They will put something else on. And poached eggs they do as well, they're done always good when I go in my local town

Definitely 9.5 for me, the bonus is the free refills. I like Hot Chocolate and before covid you only had 1 but they've changed it to refills now, so it's ideal for me. Stay safe

I would so love a breakfast like that. Bacon looks fantastic (we only get streaky here in Nevada) Free refills on nice coffee. And the price!?!? Wonderful. I’d have to give it a 9.5 on looks alone.

@@TheMacMaster Heard that you’re going to Vegas. Maybe one day you can head up to Reno - only 440 miles from Vegas. Have a great trip and looking forward to seeing your reviews of Sin City.

Really surprised that you enjoyed that. Me and my wife went to spoons for breakfast regularly prior to lockdown but after lockdown it has changed so much. The sausages are cheap and awful, the hash browns greasy and the bacon cold and fatty. They’ve stopped doing the Scottish breakfast too up here. They have removed so many things from the menu and cut down the portion sizes. Maybe it’s just Scotland or maybe the quality varies depending on whether the chef actually cares about what they’re producing. Anyway glad that you enjoyed it. Try the same thing in Scotland if you ever venture up here, especially in Glasgow and see how it compares.

Before this mad situation you had all your sauces in bottles at every Wetherspoon so I guess the sachet situation is temporary, but I agree with you that a ‘Spoons breakfast is worth every single penny, and unlimited tea and coffee is a bonus. For me it’s a 10/10

Went to a Wetherspoons in Meadowhall shopping centre in my hometown of Sheffield and it was terrible. Flip side I went to one in Liverpool and had bacon and pancakes and that was amazing !! Although that was after a night out which could have corrupted my brain 😂😂😂😂
