Just some comments from a swede. 1) There is tipping in Sweden. The staff have a salary they can live off. So not tipping is fine and tip is not taken for granted. But it is still common to tip if you are happy with the food/service or if you want to be nice/generous. 2) Shoes inside is a big NO! Unless the host specifically tells you to keep the shoes on, you take them off. 3) The loan you get is not to pay for the education but to cover the cost of living (rent, food etc). You get a few hundred $ from the state each month while you study. If that doesn't cover your expenses you can take a loan from the state while you study (which is better loan than the ones offered from the banks). If you live att your parents place or have a weekend job you can finish university studies without any loan. This is uncommon though 4&5) Bike lanes and good public transport just makes more sense if you are supposed to be a civilized country. Designing cities for cars is just a bad idea.
It seem like if you are born poor in America, you stay poor! In Sweden you have all the power to improve your life without having money in the family. I am OLD and I have studied for a year now and I didn't even have to take a loan, our social network took care of me during this year. I will study for 2 more years and for that I will have to take out a loan but it is so affordable and low interest that I don't mind at all. By the way, Kim got her Swedish residency approved so she lives here permanently now and we are glad to have her. Great reaction as always. Greets from Sweden.
The loan for university in Sweden isn’t really for the education (like classes and so on), it’s to pay for living, like rent, food, school material and beer. The public transportation in Sweden has several reasons, the two primary are that it’s better for the environment and that it actually has a solidarity aspect to it. Not everybody can afford a car (single moms, right) and their kids won’t have the same opportunity to go to the beach or whatever…but with public transportation they do.
I just don't get it why workers in America don't have more rights The restaurant leaders expect the guest to literally pay their worker's wages by exploiting their staff with minimal wagers and thus, just like shopping in America, the prices on the menu are never what you're actually gonna pay. THAT, if anything, is fishy business. If a customer can't rely on prices then it only starts the question on what else the restaurant/the store is hiding.
Taking of your shoes inside is not just for your house being clean. The best way to take care of your feet is not to walk in shoes the whole day. But if you feel off without shoes, in Europe you can buy "indoor shoes" (they aren't just slippers, some are quite nice). Or you can use a pair of sneakers as your "indoor shoes". As in - never wear them outdoors.
In my city they stopped with cash on buses after someone tried to rob a bus. They decided it was safer for the drivers to not have to handle money at all. This was long before it all went digital. You could buy ticket coupons or actual tickets in certain places (and ticket automats).
Regarding taking your shoes off inside... I am Swedish but haven't lived in Sweden for about 20 years so things might have changed, but it used to be a bit of a class issue. "Posh" people often kept their shoes on and just barged in as if it was the most natural thing. I suppose, going back in time especially, they never had to do their own cleaning anyway - there would be staff to take care of the dirt...
The toxic capitalism together with religion is bad. We have capitalism in Europe but still not toxic. But one has to be aware. We have a lot of American wannabees.
What you said about that it takes 30 minutes to get to Denmark... I mean, sure, if you live in very south of Sweden. For me it takes about 5 lol. She has another interesting video about the difference between Swedish and American schools th-cam.com/video/2S5H3-uW3Ms/w-d-xo.html

Just five??? Should be more like 100!!!
It's a perverse system where employers don't have to pay minimum wage.
