Building Bridges: Culturally Sensitive Technology Integration in Indigenous and Rural Communities

Synopsis: The proposed project aims to develop a sustainable and interdisciplinary framework for introducing technology to indigenous and rural communities in a way that respects and enhances their cultural practices and traditions. By traveling to Belize, Mexico, India, the Philippines, and Japan, the project will explore how different societies integrate technology into their daily lives and how cultural values influence technological adoption. The research will involve collaborating with local organizations and communities to understand their perspectives on technology and to identify best practices for implementing digital tools that support cultural preservation. Throughout this project I will consider my positionality as the researcher and the power dynamics at play, striving to build trust and maintain an open mind towards communities that may be resistant to technological integration. Sustainable projects like this require teaching, patience, understanding, and collaboration rather than imposing a single solution. Each unique community may have a different approach based on their specific needs. The ultimate goal is to advocate for inclusive and culturally sensitive approaches to technology development, fostering a new generation of technology that is people-oriented and reflective of diverse ways of being.
About the presenter(s): I am a dedicated researcher and advocate for culturally sensitive technology integration, with a focus on Belize's diverse cultures. My work involves collaborating with local communities in Belize to understand their unique needs and perspectives on digital technology. Through partnerships with organizations like The Heritage Education Network Belize and the SISE House of Culture, I aim to support cultural preservation while understanding the current technological resources at hand. My studies in computer science, coupled with a passion for anthropology, drive my commitment to fostering sustainable and inclusive technological development that respects and enhances Belizean cultural heritage. I was interested in coming to Belize as I would join with both government and non-governmental organizations dedicated to the development of ICT in Belize.
