So first off any info I give in this video about how these guys are formed is not gospel, I’m still a rookie, but it’s more what my mind is trying to figure out about how the rocks get their characteristics. I just started tumbling rocks with a national Geographic tumbler I got for christmas. I am very new at doing this type of thing but I"m gonna document it on youtube. The stone at 6:08 - around here, we call that a plume agate or a moss agate depending on the arrangement of the inclusions. Not really moss, but has the appearance. I would love to make a cabochon of that on the grinder and see exactly how those inclusions are shaped down inside. Those kinds of inclusions are the real fun of cutting stones. Very nice surprise!

I live in the USA in utah and I find TONES of this (every room has at least one large mixing bowl full) I love it! They are so beautiful ❤ I hot a really big piece of light pink chalcedony that weighs about 3lbs. It's really the best
@@mandyeastwood8022 just outside of kamas ut, it's about a 20minnut drive. If you know where soapstone pass is it's all over the campgrounds up there! I usually find the most in the wash out on the side of the dirt roads!

Nice rocks. My saw is in the garage and it's -16C with -27C windchill. I won't be doing any cutting until the temperatures get back to about freezing. I got my saw just a week or two before freeze up... so I am itching to get a chance to use with a new blade. I was going to drive to the beach for a walk this morning where I can still pick up rocks but when I walked around the corner of the house to start the car that wind hit me right in the face... I just turned around and came right back in. Not a day to be walking on the beach.

@@Rookie_Rockounding My son has a heated hoodie I borrow for days like this. It's amazing the difference it makes. Even has heated pockets although I can't use the pockets with my winter coat on too. :) As long as the wind isn't hitting my face I do alright. I do my tumbling in the basement... It's bloody cold down there to as it's not heated but no wind, no snow and no ice down there. The price of grit has just about tripled in the last two months so I can afford any of that so I have collected fine sand that washes up on the flatter rocks. It seems to do step one pretty good and I have been saving used grit. Hopefully that will keep me entertained until it goes down in price or I figure out another way to smooth and polish them. James Mann Hi James, Interesting comment and sensible, economic thinking, trust me I have tried just about everything as an alternative for buying new grit, the cost can outweigh any benefits and if it's a low budget hobby grit is low on the list of needs. Salvaged grit is good but this is what I found , starting with 80 grit silicon and changing after two weeks or less was the same as leaving what was in there with a slight dilute and some 220 grit, ditto for the next. Final grit, pre polish, polish and burnish all have to be by the book with great attention to avoid cross contamination. Sand will work on some rock but breaks down easily and in no time at all. Never tried black sand as it's not readily available to me but it would be worth a try on step 1&2 . I have had success to a certain extent with rock sludge from my lawtone sump, the residue from cutting resembles mud and when rubbed between your fingers it is possible to feel single particles of grit among the sludge, I wanted to try the sludge. By filtering in the easiest way possible I filtered some mineral sludge and it worked reasonably well, if filtered more I'm sure it would also be useful for pre polishing, these are my findings and not recommendations so tread wisely. I filtered through a metal container from a cappuccino maker after mixing the sludge with clean water to make a very thin gravy, kept it agitated while allowing it to filter through, never forcing anything through and rinsing out when the flow slowed down, laborious but strangely satisfying. I hope this has helped you and given you food for thought as well as possibly saving you some money. Stay warm.
@@symonsheppard5519 Thanks. We have two beaches that have black sand beaches but it's winter here and much harder getting to these places. I have been happy with the regular beach sand from our stoney beaches here in Step One tumbling. We have red rock layers on a couple of the beaches I love walking. I noticed one that the rock is kind of flat in places but sloping towards the shore. My first sand collecting had various size material but the sand that was on these flat sloped rocks was sifted like they down when panning for gold. I was really impressed with using it for step one. I have also saved the remains of grit I have already used but forgot to label the contains... Brain Fart... I used some of that as a stop two and it seems to have worked great but I think I just got luck on that one. I am not trying to keep better order of what I am doing. Thanks for the tips.

Hello I just wanted to share every weekend me and my husband go Agate hunting along the coast my favorite place is bow Creek there's quite a few places along Oregon Coast. Sometimes the agates stick out like a sore thumb it's very exciting. I don't think me and my husband will ever stop looking exciting Treasures.

So much fun to be had and watching your delayed gratification was super familiar. haha The moss agate you opened up had a nice "plume" affect to the moss growth with lots of good color, the thunderegg core was a cool cut and the druse geode was a nice find. The jasper/chalcedony piece is super beautiful, im a big fan of multicolored stones and jaspers can have some of the best blends of bright colors to them. Keep up the good work sir! Just a tip, if you window the big ones you get an idea of whats inside with the whole stone intact. And you can get a clear view of lines or layers, and angle cut to reveal more from your slices.

I’ve learned to stand to the side while cutting so not to catch the rooster tail of spray. I have a similar style saw where water is fed from under you could get an tiny circulation aquarium pump from any pet store and have water feed from above flowing down on the closest to you side of the blade. Helps heaps
Grassguy 420 Dude! Yes! That’s a great idea! Both of them haha! I’ll try standing to the side next time and I’m gonna look into a small aquarium pump dripping from the top, cause the reservoir underneath empties to the minimum water line mark really quickly. Thanks heaps brother!
Moss agate and a very nice one, it's those sort that are more sought after for cabs and can produce some of the best and prettiest pieces. Nice clean cuts on those, the clear one with a single band isn't classed as agate. The one with the crystal Druze hole is a geode. Right again, jasper/ agate mix possibly with some moss included. Be careful, remember what I said, bright torch to see inside when possible and finally, when you cut what is an unknown entity, cut enough off the end that could be used for tumble or cab so you make a window for assessment, then make a second cut if needed, some are so nice that you don't want any waste. Great assessment Symon! I'd like to add to your remark about the clear one w/ single band not being an agate. I agree, the piece isn't an agate. It would be a 'multiphasic sedimentation', during which only the very first phase produced agate banding. The rest of the space was then occupied by a non-banding phase. Had the nodule been larger, or the clear phase introduced less fluid, it would have been a geode, just like the other multiphasic piece that *was* a geode. So RR could say that this area "tends to have multiphasic nodules characterized by outer banding and inner clear-to-geode phases..."

I wish I could make my own youtube series, just so that I can have an excuse to meet Liz and Wal (and now you and Benny.) :) My dream trip is spending a month in Queensland with my best friend, fossicking everywhere we can go. We'd fly into Brisbane, rent a caravan, buy a mess of tools and gear, then drive a long, big loop clockwise through QLD. We'd sell all of the equipment at the end, and ship home anything we find that won't fit in our luggage. Saving the money to make it happen...
Oh that sounds like a brilliant idea! If you end up doing it, let us know! I would love to meet Wal n Liz one day also. They just seem like genuinely rad people. Even if just for fun (which is why I started sharing my videos), you should try and film something and pop it up on here. I love watching others share their vids, and you can even use your phone to video. As long as it’s not shaky, and has good sound, most people would like it. I’d encourage anyone to try it out. 1:45 There is a fella on facebook BC rockhunters who calls that orange a disodero agate and figured he is the only one in the world with those colors lol. Very nice
bonus cut is rhyolite the holes on the skin kinda reveal it. nice how chalcedony came in and filled the holes making for some sweet slices! I call it silicated rhyolite or (rhyolite jasper usually)
You should grab some diamond pads for a grinder from the hardware store. They have packs with all tbe different grits for polishing. The grits from 150 all the way to 3000. They are usually about 4 inch.😊 Shalom

I reckon you're right. I haven't seen a bit of Australia that I didn't think was amazingly beautiful. I'm sure if you dropped me out of the sky, wherever I fell I'd be happy. As long as it's not on a poisonous spider! 😂 Anyway, Prase and Chrysoprase are a green chalcedony. Definitely look it up! Beautiful mineral. I'm still learning loads and have a ways to go...but I love studying these beauties. You know you got it bad when you're dreaming of rocks at night😆

I stopped cutting them with a little saw because they don't cut straight and it makes it very difficult to polish the gouges out after. The blades wobble a bit as they are only for tiles not beautiful agates/chalcedony lol. The best if possible always is one true cut.

Sometimes I get worried I'll come across as a wannabe 'know it all' so I hope I don't sound that way because I am absolutely not I really am just bouncing ideas around because I'm trying to figure it out myself. I'm doing a whole life reflection thing atm. I actually feel quite sad that I didn't think that loving rocks could be a career. I missed my calling and I've only just worked it out. Why didn't I think of doing geology, goldsmithing and gemology. Why didn't I think that a fascination with rocks could be a path into doing what I love. (Gonna drum it into my kids though not to feel awkward about what interests them!) What I really appreciate though is how your videos have brought together a lot of like minded people who find nothing boring about pondering the formation of a stone picked out of 1000's of other stones in a creek bed!

Hey Jodie, yeah of course, I’ve seen a lot of people do it and they get amazing results from it! But keep the stone wet by dipping it a lot or by having a drip above where you’re carving.
I thought that ugly Rock looks like petrified wood . I like ugly rocks too, any thing different. Enjoyed ! P.S. cut some of your larger rocks lengthwise . Just a thought!

👍👍👍 yes you can. Just follow the instruction and use bicarbonate soda (baking soda) diluted in water after the acid bath. It neutralises any acid left on the rock 😉 and use all your safety stuff. Goggles, mask, gloves etc.

Thirst Fast Thanks Adam! Yeah it looks really similar hey. There’s a bunch of green softer rock in the creeks of this area that always make me wonder what they are. They don’t have the marking like malachite but the colour is really close. Is that from copper?
@@Rookie_Rockounding Yes, malachite is a hydrous carbonate of copper. But I'm leaning much more toward it being prehnite. A silicate of calcium and aluminum, prehnite occurs in some of the vesicular basalts around here that also host agates. It's color is typically a soft green to yellow-green, and the shape is not dissimilar to your grape-agate (and some of that orange agate you find in the globular crystal habit). Occasionally I find prehnite in the same vesicle with agate. When I do it has a very similar look to what you cut there. Thinking about it, I can't believe I didn't just go straight to prehnite.... I'll send you a picture of a piece.
Oh man prehnite is one of my first ever favourite minerals/gems, it’s beautiful and the Crystal growth pattern is just so cool! I’d love it if it had some in there! I haven’t heard of it being found in this area but it so doesn’t mean it’s not there. People out here are quite tight lipped about what they find and where. It kinda adds to the excitement of treasure hunting in a way 👌🤓
@@Rookie_Rockounding Hahahaha! That tight-lipped propensity is a global rockhounding attribute. I'd be willing to bet that at least some of the green you find in those kind of breccia pieces is in fact prehnite. It should tumble all right with chalcedony, fairly similar hardness.
Just curious, is your shirt getting wet because you're standing in front of the direction the blade is spinning? Is there any way you can turn the table part around, or does it only go on the one way because of the arm for the guard? That just seems weird to me! I'm always sitting on the side of the saw that isn't getting sprayed! Great stuff though, as always m8!
Thirst Fast Ah yeah, haha, I’m standing right in front of the blade while it’s spinning towards me. The table doesn’t move apart from to change the angle of the cut but I think I’m gonna try and stand to the side a bit and see if that keeps me a little bit dryer. It’s hard though cause sometimes when cutting a second cut after flipping a bigger one through the top I like watching the blade to make sure it’s lined up right sorta thing. The stone at 6:08 - around here, we call that a plume agate or a moss agate depending on the arrangement of the inclusions. Not really moss, but has the appearance. I would love to make a cabochon of that on the grinder and see exactly how those inclusions are shaped down inside. Those kinds of inclusions are the real fun of cutting stones. Very nice surprise!

@@mandyeastwood8022 just outside of kamas ut, it's about a 20minnut drive. If you know where soapstone pass is it's all over the campgrounds up there! I usually find the most in the wash out on the side of the dirt roads!

Nice rocks. My saw is in the garage and it's -16C with -27C windchill. I won't be doing any cutting until the temperatures get back to about freezing. I got my saw just a week or two before freeze up... so I am itching to get a chance to use with a new blade.
I was going to drive to the beach for a walk this morning where I can still pick up rocks but when I walked around the corner of the house to start the car that wind hit me right in the face... I just turned around and came right back in. Not a day to be walking on the beach.

@@Rookie_Rockounding My son has a heated hoodie I borrow for days like this. It's amazing the difference it makes. Even has heated pockets although I can't use the pockets with my winter coat on too. :)
As long as the wind isn't hitting my face I do alright.
I do my tumbling in the basement... It's bloody cold down there to as it's not heated but no wind, no snow and no ice down there.
The price of grit has just about tripled in the last two months so I can afford any of that so I have collected fine sand that washes up on the flatter rocks. It seems to do step one pretty good and I have been saving used grit. Hopefully that will keep me entertained until it goes down in price or I figure out another way to smooth and polish them.

Interesting comment and sensible, economic thinking, trust me I have tried just about everything as an alternative for buying new grit, the cost can outweigh any benefits and if it's a low budget hobby grit is low on the list of needs.
Salvaged grit is good but this is what I found , starting with 80 grit silicon and changing after two weeks or less was the same as leaving what was in there with a slight dilute and some 220 grit, ditto for the next.
Final grit, pre polish, polish and burnish all have to be by the book with great attention to avoid cross contamination.
Sand will work on some rock but breaks down easily and in no time at all.
Never tried black sand as it's not readily available to me but it would be worth a try on step 1&2 .
I have had success to a certain extent with rock sludge from my lawtone sump, the residue from cutting resembles mud and when rubbed between your fingers it is possible to feel single particles of grit among the sludge, I wanted to try the sludge.
By filtering in the easiest way possible I filtered some mineral sludge and it worked reasonably well, if filtered more I'm sure it would also be useful for pre polishing, these are my findings and not recommendations so tread wisely.
I filtered through a metal container from a cappuccino maker after mixing the sludge with clean water to make a very thin gravy, kept it agitated while allowing it to filter through, never forcing anything through and rinsing out when the flow slowed down, laborious but strangely satisfying.
I hope this has helped you and given you food for thought as well as possibly saving you some money.

We have two beaches that have black sand beaches but it's winter here and much harder getting to these places.
I have been happy with the regular beach sand from our stoney beaches here in Step One tumbling.
We have red rock layers on a couple of the beaches I love walking. I noticed one that the rock is kind of flat in places but sloping towards the shore.
My first sand collecting had various size material but the sand that was on these flat sloped rocks was sifted like they down when panning for gold.
I was really impressed with using it for step one.
I have also saved the remains of grit I have already used but forgot to label the contains... Brain Fart...
I used some of that as a stop two and it seems to have worked great but I think I just got luck on that one.
I am not trying to keep better order of what I am doing.

Hello I just wanted to share every weekend me and my husband go Agate hunting along the coast my favorite place is bow Creek there's quite a few places along Oregon Coast. Sometimes the agates stick out like a sore thumb it's very exciting. I don't think me and my husband will ever stop looking exciting Treasures.

Just a tip, if you window the big ones you get an idea of whats inside with the whole stone intact. And you can get a clear view of lines or layers, and angle cut to reveal more from your slices.

I’ve learned to stand to the side while cutting so not to catch the rooster tail of spray. I have a similar style saw where water is fed from under you could get an tiny circulation aquarium pump from any pet store and have water feed from above flowing down on the closest to you side of the blade. Helps heaps

Moss agate and a very nice one, it's those sort that are more sought after for cabs and can produce some of the best and prettiest pieces.
Nice clean cuts on those, the clear one with a single band isn't classed as agate.
The one with the crystal Druze hole is a geode.
Right again, jasper/ agate mix possibly with some moss included.
Be careful, remember what I said, bright torch to see inside when possible and finally, when you cut what is an unknown entity, cut enough off the end that could be used for tumble or cab so you make a window for assessment, then make a second cut if needed, some are so nice that you don't want any waste.

Great assessment Symon! I'd like to add to your remark about the clear one w/ single band not being an agate. I agree, the piece isn't an agate. It would be a 'multiphasic sedimentation', during which only the very first phase produced agate banding. The rest of the space was then occupied by a non-banding phase. Had the nodule been larger, or the clear phase introduced less fluid, it would have been a geode, just like the other multiphasic piece that *was* a geode. So RR could say that this area "tends to have multiphasic nodules characterized by outer banding and inner clear-to-geode phases..."

I wish I could make my own youtube series, just so that I can have an excuse to meet Liz and Wal (and now you and Benny.) :) My dream trip is spending a month in Queensland with my best friend, fossicking everywhere we can go. We'd fly into Brisbane, rent a caravan, buy a mess of tools and gear, then drive a long, big loop clockwise through QLD. We'd sell all of the equipment at the end, and ship home anything we find that won't fit in our luggage. Saving the money to make it happen...

I would love to meet Wal n Liz one day also. They just seem like genuinely rad people. bonus cut is rhyolite the holes on the skin kinda reveal it. nice how chalcedony came in and filled the holes making for some sweet slices! I call it silicated rhyolite or (rhyolite jasper usually)

You should grab some diamond pads for a grinder from the hardware store. They have packs with all tbe different grits for polishing. The grits from 150 all the way to 3000. They are usually about 4 inch.😊

Of course. I just use it to clean the stones because some stains on them won’t come off with normal cleaning products.
I stopped cutting them with a little saw because they don't cut straight and it makes it very difficult to polish the gouges out after. The blades wobble a bit as they are only for tiles not beautiful agates/chalcedony lol.
The best if possible always is one true cut.

Sometimes I get worried I'll come across as a wannabe 'know it all' so I hope I don't sound that way because I am absolutely not I really am just bouncing ideas around because I'm trying to figure it out myself. I'm doing a whole life reflection thing atm. I actually feel quite sad that I didn't think that loving rocks could be a career. I missed my calling and I've only just worked it out. Why didn't I think of doing geology, goldsmithing and gemology. Why didn't I think that a fascination with rocks could be a path into doing what I love. (Gonna drum it into my kids though not to feel awkward about what interests them!) What I really appreciate though is how your videos have brought together a lot of like minded people who find nothing boring about pondering the formation of a stone picked out of 1000's of other stones in a creek bed!

Oh hell no, I like to think that this space is an open forum for people to share anything! I was actually saying to a mate the other day that if I had known about geology as a career path I would have chosen it. But at the same time, I like having rock appreciation as a pass time, it makes it so much more enjoyable, and makes working so much more funner because you know that when the weekend comes the hobby is waiting ready for more good times.

Hey Jodie, yeah of course, I’ve seen a lot of people do it and they get amazing results from it! But keep the stone wet by dipping it a lot or by having a drip above where you’re carving.

👍👍👍 yes you can. Just follow the instruction and use bicarbonate soda (baking soda) diluted in water after the acid bath. It neutralises any acid left on the rock 😉 and use all your safety stuff. Goggles, mask, gloves etc.

Thanks Adam! Yeah it looks really similar hey. There’s a bunch of green softer rock in the creeks of this area that always make me wonder what they are. They don’t have the marking like malachite but the colour is really close. Is that from copper?
@@Rookie_Rockounding Yes, malachite is a hydrous carbonate of copper. But I'm leaning much more toward it being prehnite. A silicate of calcium and aluminum, prehnite occurs in some of the vesicular basalts around here that also host agates. It's color is typically a soft green to yellow-green, and the shape is not dissimilar to your grape-agate (and some of that orange agate you find in the globular crystal habit). Occasionally I find prehnite in the same vesicle with agate. When I do it has a very similar look to what you cut there. Thinking about it, I can't believe I didn't just go straight to prehnite.... I'll send you a picture of a piece.
Oh man prehnite is one of my first ever favourite minerals/gems, it’s beautiful and the Crystal growth pattern is just so cool! I’d love it if it had some in there! I haven’t heard of it being found in this area but it so doesn’t mean it’s not there. People out here are quite tight lipped about what they find and where. It kinda adds to the excitement of treasure hunting in a way 👌🤓
@@Rookie_Rockounding Hahahaha! That tight-lipped propensity is a global rockhounding attribute. I'd be willing to bet that at least some of the green you find in those kind of breccia pieces is in fact prehnite. It should tumble all right with chalcedony, fairly similar hardness.

Just curious, is your shirt getting wet because you're standing in front of the direction the blade is spinning? Is there any way you can turn the table part around, or does it only go on the one way because of the arm for the guard? That just seems weird to me! I'm always sitting on the side of the saw that isn't getting sprayed! Great stuff though, as always m8!

Ah yeah, haha, I’m standing right in front of the blade while it’s spinning towards me. The table doesn’t move apart from to change the angle of the cut but I think I’m gonna try and stand to the side a bit and see if that keeps me a little bit dryer. It’s hard though cause sometimes when cutting a second cut after flipping a bigger one through the top I like watching the blade to make sure it’s lined up right sorta thing.
