Hi Oscar, thanks for your comments, you know a lot about strings and restringing. Unfortunately not for me, I am in my 80ties, dont sing or perform (only TH-cam).I bought my German made zither whilst at a zither seminar in Switzerland. I tried a lot of zithers and this one was my choice came with Lenzner strings. I have a spare set at home and don't have to replace very often, I agree to keep the old ones in case of emergency.
Thank you so much for placing this information on you tube. It will definitely help those who want to try their luck at changing strings on a Zither, without doing a lot of damage to it. Your video was very easy to understand, the close ups were great, the explanations were great, etc. The breaks in the video were noticeable but all in all, it is the best one I have seen yet, other than a professional video at $59.95, USA. Thank you again.
A Pro Winder Cutter will help w/ restringing the Fretted Strings. An Optima Bergfee Blue Zither String set in Munich Tuning (make sure the number of strings in the set matches the number of tuners on it both the Machine Heads & Zither pins), & also a Fretted F String (that matches) are what I use because they do produce a Special Sound, plus they allow me to accompany my singing.
The 5 Melody Strings have a Fretboard just like a Guitar and the frets get closer and closer as you go up the fret board. The 5 melody strings are attached to guitar tuners which you could use a guitar stringing crank (made by D'addario) to change them quickly and yes they also have built in wire cutters to cut off the old strings and the exes strings. The Open Strings do require a tuning wrench to crank them. The Zither is the easiest to play if you wear Finger picks.
Thanks, good advice. The melody strings are easier to tune and replace;the open strings can be a problem if you don't have a tuning key, or the pins are rusted in.

@@ilseharris4434 I can't wait to hear what it sounds like because with advancements of Technology, more and more strings are available.
@@RockStarOscarStern634 You might have to wait a while as I don't need new strings, had mine replaced at a zither seminar in Switzerland 14 months ago; Idon't play that much, zither is a hobby and not much happening here in Australia, but Iwill recommend the Optima strings with all the others when people ask me for advice. Thanks
@@ilseharris4434 Oscar Stern here. Oh yeah, Optima Strings it is cause they're my favorite. They come in 3 different tone Colors. The Green Series strings are Nylon (w/ Phosphor Bronze Flatwound Melody Strings) & they produce the Softest sound, the Blue Series Strings are Nylon & Steel (w/ Chrome Nickel Flatwound Melody Strings) & they're a little bit louder, & the Red Series Strings are the Loudest of them all because they're Steel (w/ Silver Plated Copper Wound Melody Strings). The Zither family has a Whole Family of Zithers (Concert, Harp, Quint, Psaltery, Alto, & Bass). Optima Strings came up with "Extended Viennese Tuning" for the 42 String Harp Zither by extending it all the way down to Low C#1 (whole step above the B String on a 5 String Bass).
@@ilseharris4434 I couldn't recommend anything better than Optima Strings because they come in 3 tone colors.
Yasmin, would you share your supplier in Germany contact info? I have the same zither and it has three broken strings. I recently found it in my in-laws house when we were cleaning. Thank you so much!
Not all Zither tuning pegs are left handed.
zithergirl Always recycle your strings. Optima Makes awesome zither strings:optima-strings.com/en/bergfee_concert_zither.php for Concert Zither (Harp Zither is basically an extended Concert Zither) & there's also a Psalter Zither, Alto Zither (4th below a Normal Zither basically a Tenor), Quint Zither (5th above Normal Zither Soprano Zither), & the Bass Zither (Octave lower). The Optima Strings come in 3 types Green (Nylon Core which works with a Piezo Pickup), Blue (Nylon & Steel ideal for Magnetic Pickups & also Piezo pickups), & Red (Steel works with any type of pickup).
Thanks, good to know
@@ilseharris4434 Learning to use all the strings will actually extend your knowledge. The 42 String Zither Set is available in Extended Vienna tuning down to C#1.
@@ilseharris4434 You can always add a Piezo Pickup.

Who is that voice in the background at 4.05, interrupting like that. I bet he drives a French car.☺
That's not the Zither I got...

It's a good idea to recycle your strings when they're off the instrument. Now with all the strings off the instrument, this would be a good idea to clean it up. The fret board on the Melody Strings is like a Guitar Fretboard & the frets get closer & closer as you go higher up the fret board.
