  • Listening skills are not passive! This teacher uses a sentence scramble and a true or false worksheet to encourage active listening of a teacher-made recording. In these ways, both the main ideas and supporting details are elicited.

In real life, we usually have a purpose while listening. This lesson turned out a memory test rather than a listening task; and as teachers we all know that a listening leson must no be simply a memory test. In other words, students need to have a clear aim in mind in order to focus their attention if not listening will be pointless.

I have been reading some coments and they are right when it comes to giving their opinions about the warm-up .It is very crucial to motivate Ss .

Well, personally speaking, this recording is not really ok due to the following reasons:
First, te theacher didn't ask for opening questions. She didn't get the learners interested in the topic she just said "listen to this" and it was not the proper way to start a listening lesson. In addition, She didn't use the task before the audio. I mean, she didn't tell the students what kind of questions were coming next.

Well the lesson wasn´t so bad, but as the others said, I think you should start by doing a warm-up activity, introduce Ss the topic briefly to check if Ss know some vocabulary that will be presented, now one thing that call my attention is that why are walking around the class that way? i mean I know is monitoring but I think you should let Ss working on their own and then after 2 or 3 min ask if they have any questions, some Ss might feel overwhelmed if the T stares at them for so long, that´s just my 2 cents!! Cheers!

I believe she's walking around the class to monitor the activity and to help students with unknown vocabulary and questions that might pop up.

I really don't know why she didn't start with the introductory part that is essential for getting students familiar with the topic, getting them interested in the topic they will listen to since it's the first step to carry out a good listening activity. Besides she should've set the task before playing the text, e.g. previous questions in order to students have an idea about what they are going to listen, as if not, it's merely a memory test. Good luck for next time miss...

The first set of questions, where the students were asked to put the events of the story in the right chronological order, was not a gist activity. That was listening for detailed comprehension. The gist of the listening was "Lousy Mountain Trip", which should have been discovered by the students themselves as proof of their overall comprehension of the listening passage rather than given by the teacher

She recorded it herself. You could probably use this yourself if you have a laptop, you could just let people hear the section of the speaking. Or you could record it on your phone if you have an android or the likes
