@@fenrisodessa Yes, bcuz back in the 90s, 2D animated sprites tech was pretty basic compared to now. And remember how Street Fighter 3 was hailed as the most complex 2D graphics ever made at the time it came out? Well, this game was released in 96, that's one year before Street Fighter 3!

a villain named scion (zion) with the power of a beast and a dragon, calls himself the messiah and vows to genetically engineer humanity in to his own slave race.. I can think of a certain tribe who probably wasn't too happy with this game
Mixing street fighter combat game with rpg features was such a brilliant idea. Brings back so much memories. You could save your characters with the help of very long password you had to manually write down. With levels you gained not only weapons and stats but also new moves. Beware because the bosses also gain levels (more life, smarter)! In fact, the more you level up, the harder the game gets.
Honestly, spritework is an underrated art. I know 4k resolution, 60 fps is the rage, but there's some magic at work here... I'm hoping that the day where upscaling technology is perfected comes soon, so spritework makes a return.
The issue with sprites is that it takes far too long to make a single character and in this day and age with games needing to be developed as quickly and as cheaply as possible it's just not feasible unfortunately.
Yeah just ran into this right now, amazing, as someone who studied animation, these artist are really something, the Dark Stalkers as well really creative.

An arcade game with more cutscenes than actual gameplay?! That's something you don't see often, especially when arcade games don't usually stall you so other people can play.
Looks amazing. A huge reason why I don't like new games that go for a retro appeal is they always make tiny sprites. Makes you feel so powerless even when you're winning.

Takayuki Nakayama as said in commentary published in the Japanese-exclusive artbook Street Fighter V Arcade Edition - A Visionary Book II. According to Nakayama's commentary, Menat's crystal ball is "a product of a god-beast believed to have once protected the phantom desert kingdom of Alanbird". Alanbird is one of the nations in Red Earth, known in the English version as Sangypt. This commentary indicates a Type 1 link between both series, as it is establishing the existence of an element from Red Earth in the Street Fighter setting, namely the existence of the kingdom of Alanbird. Further references can be inferred to reinforce the link: Menat's crystal ball is known as the "Left Eye of the Lion", a reference to the Egyptian deity Sekhmet, who carries a lioness appearance and the epithet "Eye of Ra". Red Earth features its own version of Sekhmet, the lion chimera-like living statue Secmeto (known as Ravange in English) whose name is just a misromanization of Sekhmet (both are written the exact same in Katakana), and official material for the game has referred to Secmeto specifically as a "god-beast", using the same kanji as in the commentary. All this could be inferred to mean Secmeto has a part in the crystal ball's creation. In other words, part of Clara's essence, after transformed into Ravange resides in Menat's sphere.
