Omri, this is a great reminder that we can still get amazing results by going back to basics. It's easy to get overwhelmed in the world of software modular synth because there are more choices than a mortal human mind can ever absorb. I hope this video encourages new learners to dive in. I also hope it encourages more experienced people to step back and enjoy making something simpler.
He does an amazing job! Im super new at euro rack and Ormi does an excellent job of showing how things work. I followed along this patch and tried some different options like I changed the VCO to the Instruo Ts-L. The sounds are so crisp. Too much fun tweaking around!
This is spot on. Any random CV into a quantiser, add some pads and bass, job done. For ambient music, everything else is sound design and effects (in other words, pick some more interesting VCOs, randomly modulate everything and chuck it all into Supermassive). I like to add a layer of 'ear candy' which is usually field recordings or resampled bits of other patches, granular experiments etc. Definitely keep it simple though, cheers! 👍
Thanks for your videos, I really love them, always inspiring me to try things and experiment. I have to say also that I love your accent and your general tone, I often watch your videos just to relax, there are not a lot of TH-camrs that gives me that smooth and relaxing vibe and I don’t leave a lot of comments like this! keep up the so good work man and thanks for your commitment to this channel!
absolutely AMAZING really appreciate you putting knowledge like this out for free and really explaining things. It helps me wrap my head around what its doing
Lovely video! I think it's an excellent introduction to building patches, but it also has some helpful concepts and/or reminders for more experienced users as well. I hadn't played with that particular S&H module before, but I love its cascading effect, and it will be definitely something I want to play with in future patches!
@@OmriCohen-Music I had one of those aha moments thanks to you! I've been kind of playing around with this whole modular thing for a good solid month when I have the time to do so and working on this project gave me that Epiphany. I started using and swapping out for hardware clones because one day I would like to make my own setup. And it just dawned on me using lfos to modulate things. I don't know. It was a great moment for me and I have you to thank for it. Thank you so much!!
Very nice refresher. I've said it before, but your online courses are so helpful and, like this video, good for going back and reviewing from time to time. All the best to you and your family in 2025.
Knowing Modular stuff, It's probably to prevent it from blasting his ears at full volume(level). Even in real life modular stuff, it is generally unwise to not reduce levels of modular stuff as they can easily blow speakers and damage equipment as they typically work with higher voltages than instruments like guitars.
uh nice, the asr thing is new to me and makes for some really nice "crawling" melodies or progressions (I'm not great with the terminology) thank you :)
Hi Omri, Could you make a detail video on how to use Patch bay from Venom to create a perfect interface ! Because I saw your video while you are using it but that is not obvious for me to understand it like that! I am sure many of your followers will love it !😊 Thanks a lot, awesome job like always
Everything @CosineKitty said - I find it so beneficial to go back to fundamentals. It's like the painter having to take a step back from the canvas to be able to see the whole. It's also easy to feel like you're chasing your own tail, but going back to the rudiments illustrates how much one has learned. Thanks a ton for this video!
Thank you for the inspiring input for the homework. Your courses on Gumroad are and remain wonderful stepping stones for finding one's way back into the modular world after a phase with other synthesizers.
Hello Omri, I am considering to buy the VCV Rack. Can you clarify the following? So, by paying the pro version, I will be able to use it in my DAW with the free and pro modules. But the pro modules are very limited, 5-6 modules. Also, I will have to pay for the host module, right? So, the rack is USD 149 + the host USD 30 + the cost of the modules from the library
Hi! When buying the pro version, you get all the free modules, yes. I'm not sure which premium ones you get, though. You also get the VST version that allows you to use VCV inside your DAW. I'm not sure if you will need Host, though, since you can just load VSTs inside your DAW. I will double check everything, though, just to make sure. I'm not up to date with the VCV sales and offers.
Thanks again, Omri, for these fresh, step-wise Beginner Tutorials. I commented on a very recent post that I'm a 69 year-old Retiree taking a novices deep-dive plunge on VCV Rack, with it feeling still very much like drinking from a firehose. I'm slowly working witrh videos from your Archives and have discovered that numerous current VCV modules have changed/evolved considerably, both in cosmetic design as well as architecture, making the learning process a bit sluggish as it requires a fair bit of experiementation in order to achieve the same results as you. Which is actually a good thing! Cheers!
Thanks! I guess that it's the nature of software, that things get updated. But I'm trying my best to show that it's not about the modules themselves, but it's about their functionality, and many things can be done with other modules as well.
@@OmriCohen-Music Hi Omri! Having worked with Personal Computing (PC) for over 40 years, I entirely understand the mutable nature of both hardware and software. That said, the fact the Modules in your Instructional Vids have changed is actually a good thing, as this necessitates the User (in this case, me) to develop a deeper and greater understanding of the device rather than simply mimicing what you have done and then moving on. In a sense, "sideways re-engineering". Thanks again for what you are doing. Very grateful for the time, energy and obvious love you have for teaching. Cheers, Mate!

The nice thing about this, is that you can always make it more complex and let it evolve together with your learning experience.

Shush! I just bought another module, even though I’m a complete noob. Haha!
Excellent comment, Kitty
@CosineKitty agreed, and thanks to Omri for reminding me to check out your Galaxy reverb, sounds great! 🙂
This is the first time I've actually looked forward to doing my homework

Hi Omri, thank's for this patch and your creative impulses for us. I wish you and your loved ones all the best for 2025✌
Thanks so much!
Yes! Please do more, it's like meant for me❤
Thank you so much Omri! This is a great starting template. I too get in way over my head when it comes to generative. Happy New Year!
Cheers!
brilliant Omri, thanks and happy new year from Greece!!!

Good stuff, as always!
Thanks Prof!! This is absolutely beautiful! I can't wait to get home to try this and finish my homework 😂
Let me know how it goes!
Yeah am doing that too ;D

0:25 Why the Level knob isn't in its default position (so the level is reduced)?

Yeah, this is just to make sure the audio is not too loud on the way out for recording. I usually go with -12dB

Do you know of any S&H analog shift register modules like the one you’re using in the video? Preferably cheap ones.

is there a hardwarelversion of the s&h asr module ?
There are not many shift registers out there... Nothing close to the S&H ASR as far as I know

Where should I send my homework to get marked?
No marks on this type of homework, but feel free to send me the result. I would love to take a listen.
It says it was released eleven hours ago, but the comments are several days old.#confused
I publish videos on Patreon a few days earlier as early access posts.
@@OmriCohen-Music Aaah, makes sense!
Omri... "The Goat" plain and simple. I doubt anyone in TH-cam Eurorack is more well respected. 🥰
Thank you!
