"I'm not going to fix something that's not broke." Mike talking about the 850B reminds me of my old tech instructor when he said "If it's working OK, don't take it apart to find out why."
That's the problem! People don't know how to replicate stupendous sounding violins because theuy can't see what's different! In my opinion if you want to replicate something good you have to take it apart to look for what's different from the run of the mill.
"That thing is paid for, out here making money. I am not going to do anything but praise it." Probably the smartest thing I have ever heard spoken on TH-cam. I don't know a thing about dozers but I know good horse sense when I see it and you got good horse sense DP.
.............and the very next day, there was MBTS! You, Arran (sp?), Jerry and Capt. Kleeman, are one of the best combinations on You Tube, as the numbers are proving! Well done, and best regards.
I got the same treatment when i asked about freeze plugs on a chevy 350 in a 82 c30. 4.5miles and she got so got it choked itself out being hot. People were sayibg "oh, replace the engine" "rebuild the engine" yada yada yada. Waited for it to cool, added some water, she ran the same as before with a waterfall feature. Those old engines were ment for abuse as long as the maintenance is done. My mechanic, since i dont have the tools to pull an engine, said it looks good other than rotted out plugs creating a water feaure. Wouldnt do that with a new aluminum block! One thing i do love about older equipment. They designed it for torque and low HP for less fuel consumption. These newer are the opposite for the most part under load. Also depends on the engine to fuel consumption new and old included, but from experience under heaby load older seems to be better. Less parasitic draws, excluding AC systems from the equation.
That ground looks tough hence takes some penetrating and drags the blade in due to the down pressure to penetrate !!- i reckon the Rake angle needs adjusting ( Turn Buckle)for that particular ground- its the same principle as cutting steel with a Hand Chisel
I was stationed in Alaska in the Air Force from 1971 to 1975. We had a job to rebuild a radar site that got destroyed in a serious storm in 1972. It was split into two camps, Top Camp and Bottom Camp. Top was at about 7000 ft and bottom camp was at about 2500 ft. The road from bottom to top camp had 8 switchbacks to get to the top. That made it almost impossible to get big dump trucks up to top camp with materials. The solution was 4 large CAT D9 dozers. We used those to cut a straight path up to top camp. that made it possible to hook three dump trucks behind a CAT and pull them up. That was a site to behold. You are talking about cold; it was very cold when we were working on this site. All the D9's had special heaters to keep them warm so we could get them started. Those were the days I will always remember.
You size the equipment the way you do, because of the work you do, and your location. Larger machines are harder to move, and you can’t make money with equipment you can’t move. People compare you to LetsDig18, but even he countless times has said that his equipment stays put for months at a time, whereas you guys might move 2 or 3 times a week. I understand your operation, and think you guys are excellent.
Yeah Boyz!!! Ee got muskeg up here! No bottom to it ! Flotation pads on everything pretty much except quarry machines! It's going to be deep enough for my mini boat!!! Ha ha ha
I think a lot of people might overlook the advantage of equipment diversity. Every job is a little different and the attributes of each tractor can be helpful. As far as changing tracks or rebuilding anything, people should jump online and price that stuff out, add in shipping, wages, then perhaps 25% extra for incidentals. Doesn’t take long to spend $25k on one of these things.
DP you should put a female plug attached to your batteries similar to what is used on forklifts on all your equipment then have a long cable you can simply plug in to jump your batteries. Save lots of time and easy...
DP……just in regards to the comments you are receiving on rebuilding the engine on the older bulldozer…..you know how it is with those back seat operators, that seem to know everything about the machinery you are running…..but here’s the kicker……they don’t have to pay for it and run a business as well as other things associated with that and still be able to carry out the work at profit not a loss when it comes to running heavy machinery…..god bless and keep up the good work.
You and your team are Great Hard Working American's with a incredible amount of experience...your not dumb, please don't take dumb comments seriously..u and many other channels take it personal and some just read a few. Be proud..u have a great channel and your do great work.. Always enjoy
Jerry reminds me of someone not interested in the money! Jest has a love for the equipment and has fun running it. I’ve always been interested in equipment and watching it run . And now I have my own logging business with a skidder and small dozzer and couldn’t be happier. Nice job good video mike.
Two machines could roll off the assembly line one right in front of the other and still have their quarks between the two. Loving the videos DP, always good to see you and Jerry running side by side. Looking forward to seeing everything to come in shop vids.
Another cool camera angle for a time lapse of the dozers would be the camera mounted on the bucket of the excavator and then raise the boom, stick and bucket to full height.
We run into the black smoke comments on our older tractors. Thats how they made HP back in the day. Also doesn't have computerized variable timing which makes a ton of difference on the smoke. Shes just working hard aint nothing wrong with the old gal.
"Bat crap crazy"! I love it, preach on Brother. You got to love the back seat drivers that have never even set on a machine! Im from east of Letsdig18 and everything here is LGP so when you said 30 in tracks and after looking at the dozer on film it kind of surprised me that you can go 6in wider but thats almost 4 1/2 sq ft more track on the ground. Thats huge.
Hey mike it just seams that those older machine's pushed straighter for some.reason. could be cause of yes they had wider feet. But that j is A sweet one thou.
Good job brother and as you yourself said don't fix it if it's not broken. There is nothing wrong with your equipment or Jerry or yourself. If I had a person like Mr Jerry in my life I will feel blessed to. ✌️
32 years young, and still starts first time !!! The young J can learn a lot from B, wider grousers will make a big difference to the pushing abilities of the J. Your explanations made sense, I am always intrigued by your reasons and they do make sense. What works for you will not work for everyone else, but then everyone else is not working where you are....... One more day and the vast majority will be done, the amount of work you two get done in a day is astounding Mike !! 💪💪💪😎😎😎
Hello Mike this Video to show how cold it is, and You and the Crew this Work to Finish to know. The Weather forecast what is on Video from USA to see is terrible, and the Pictures from the Highways too. Love Greetings from 🇦🇹
Thanks for offering some insight about the difference between the machines. I cannot image what it takes to do your job with the skill level that you have. Just happy to be along for the adventure.
Most people only get exercise by jumping to conclusion. You do an excellent job of maintaining your equipment. You can be successful only if your income matches your expenses plus % of profit.
Nice job Mike explaining dozer operations, lots of attention by you to make your baby move like so gracefully over the landscape!! Love it, you and the Master kicking butt👍🇺🇸
Well that answered the truck or track photo. It definitely needs wider pads for softer ground. I’m still partial to the draft arm location, but hey I’m not arguing. Love the rants, people comment the craziest things sometimes.
You probably forgot more about operating equipment than most people know.Keep up the great work.Love your live chats and I never miss a video.👏🏼👏🏼👍🥤🥤🇨🇦🇺🇸That’s going to be a big pond.
You overlooked the fact that if he’d had jump plugs installed it’s unlikely that he would have found the issue of a broken connection, that broken connection left disconnected could have caused more failures, for a start alternators don’t like running disconnected!
Its obvious you take great care of your equipment and know what you need for your own operation, people just want to put their two cents in and its easy to tell someone to spend a ton of money when its not their own. Lake is coming along beautifully too!!
Another great video. I'll tell you this: I've learned a lot in watching you guys build a pond/lake! I just figured you took a dozed and shoved out a hole and called it good ( packing the dam as you went up). Never heard of a key way until watching Dirt Perfect! I could count all these pond jobs as CEU's (Continuing Education Units) Lee Thanks Mike & Jerry!
Ok DP, we experienced the same problem you're experiencing with the J. The trunion arms are connected towards the rear of the dozer. This makes a greater fulcrum on the tracks. It can push the rear of the tracks left and right easier. With the trunions mounted in the center, the pushing force is distributed evenly, front and rear. We cut the trunion arms off, made them shorter, and mounted them in the center position. Problem solved. Also, it distributes the weight evenly on the tracks. Something to ponder. And it's not hard to shorten the arms.
My thoughts exactly. I don’t have any dozers, but do have several skidsteers and mini track hoes. They all act different. Some times even the exact same machine. Sometimes you just can’t explain it.
I am not arguing with your statement, but adding the ripper is going to change the weight distribution. It will be interesting to see if the ripper changes how the 850 pushes.
I believe this is the correct answer. The effective "Traction area" of the tracks is behind the mounting point of the blade arms, when digging the blade into the ground there is a slight "unweighting" of the track pads forward of the blade arms mounting point. When driving the corner bit aggressively into the ground that track will have an uneven weight distribution relative to the cylinder pressure pushing the corner bit into the ground. This appears to cause a significant traction differential between the tracks, causing the dozer to turn into the direction of the cut. Shortening the blade arms (like whats on the B) would increase the effective traction area behind the blade arm mounts equializing the tracks more effectively, there would also reasonably be more weight on the rear of the tracks helping to maximize traction and minimize torsional forces from the blades corner bit into the dozer body.
Another great series of videos. I’m still working through the videos to make it to the current episodes. Second time watching this series. Not sure if it’s in an up coming video that I haven’t watched yet. I enjoy the follow up videos, seeing the start to finish then a six month or year later follow up. It’s great to see the transformation of the projects and properties. Again not sure if you done a video but what is the difference or classification between the 850J vs 850B. Besides year and some physical changes. On to the next video.
I think you are right ..on the green dozer more hp and the ground you work with. Wider tracks might not spin out when you dig with the coner of the blade. The type of ground you work with will dictate the personality of the equipment.
Every operation is different. It is amazing how much more people know how to do your work than you do. I see it quite often in the welding ship. Your equipment makes sense to me especially since the vast soil types you deal with equipment choice is one of the biggest things people struggle with. Just because something is bigger does not mean it will make you more money.
Your comment about horsepower and traction is totally correct , weight and horsepower has to be balanced , this is also related to farm tractors, if you have too much horsepower and not enough weight it will just sit and spin , the blade mount on your J does affect its focal points for pushing , if they are set back father on the frame past center towards the rear will push the rear over when your blade digs in on the corners.
Looks good. Every dozer blade full improves the look. That is gonna be a good looking lake, dam when she fills up and get the grass to take hold. Great video thanks for sharing.
Your comments about control when tracks start slipping is true . Operating a Deere tracked 500 plus hp tractor designed for max traction and flotation cannot be steered in muddy conditions when tracks slip . You have to not steer and hope you do not bury the machine.
Track width is a tricky choice. Wider the tracks the less ground pressure and better you "float". The narrower the tracks the more ground pressure and the better you can push. It's all in the operator's choice that will suit the bulk of his work applications or best compliment the rest of the fleet of equipment. Good video and the job is looking great.
Enjoy your videos. Was wondering if there is a way you can group projects in “playlists” so it would be easier to follow a particular project from start to finish.
Thank you DP for being such a professional and the pride you and your crew take in doing the job correctly. Maybe some of these not so reputable contractors will learn from you. As you know your name is on everything you do. God bless you and your crew.
Some of your problems are the newer jd dozers are lighter in the rear than the older dozers even the bull gears are lighter than the older dozers.so when the blade digs in it Floats in the rear you can see it if you watch the rear of the 850j.watch it sometime.
if any thing I think the track pressure might be a bit low cold air affects the air pressure .. your trucks could be under pressure .. check air pressure adjust and test drive .. Great video DP also maybe try having a can of PEPSI on both sides of you in the dozer might help the balance of the unit so it can dig .. Can't wait too see this pond full of water ..
Thanks for the video 👍😎

On the 850B the obvious difference is the low slung "push bars" for the blade.
Best advice I have heard in a long long time.
@@BobPegram No one is trying to replicate anything here, what are you talking about?

I don't have a clue as to what's going on in your videos. I just enjoy watching machines.

I agree about theB if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Do the maintenance and let her do her thang.
I agree with you if it ain't broke don't fix it
Mike stay worm and safe.
thanks, you too
👍You guys need to name that green deer (The Green Beast). Great video guys keep up the great work. 🇺🇸 God Bless America.

The red bracket in the cab of the 850 is for a standard NATO fire extinguisher, it is also a perfect fit for a carefully sized Thermos flask.

Where I worked we had 3 963D track loader, identical bought at the same time new. Each one was just a little different.
Slight correction. You can turn while pushing, if you are cutting you probably cannot turn unless it's a light cut.

Another very productive day. That new laser is very cost effective and should speed up your work. Thanks for sharing. 🙂👍 🇮🇪
Trimble and Top Con are top drawer grade control systems.
With some rare machines everything comes together and makes it a freak special unit. Can’t explain it but you’re right to leave it alone.
Thanks for offering some insight about the difference between the machines. I cannot image what it takes to do your job with the skill level that you have. Just happy to be along for the adventure.

I have a lazer like that. Just weld you a skinny flat plate that sticks up above blade and it can read really good without dozer being in way
The yellow one seems better, but there both good for what there used for.
Dang you look cold... ❄️❄️❄️🌀
Most people only get exercise by jumping to conclusion. You do an excellent job of maintaining your equipment. You can be successful only if your income matches your expenses plus % of profit.

Well that answered the truck or track photo. It definitely needs wider pads for softer ground. I’m still partial to the draft arm location, but hey I’m not arguing. Love the rants, people comment the craziest things sometimes.

Mike, you need a set of military slave cables and a few sockets for your other 24v equipment. Safer and easier to connect for those cold starts.
You overlooked the fact that if he’d had jump plugs installed it’s unlikely that he would have found the issue of a broken connection, that broken connection left disconnected could have caused more failures, for a start alternators don’t like running disconnected!

Hello great video. What happen to the fire extinguisher in the green 850
I was going to say this until I saw your comment. 👍 It sure is a nice looking holder though. 🤭
Agree. The j arms are farther back or so it looks on videos. Some measurements on video would be interesting to see
I am not arguing with your statement, but adding the ripper is going to change the weight distribution.
@@ronsommer9409 you are correct on weight distribution. The ripper will help, we'll have to see if it helps. If not, time to move the arms forward
