I'm really happy to see that you used a good bit of footage from the show Silent Service from the 50s. The men of the USS Barb snuck ashore and planted one of the Barb's scuttling charges onto one of the railroad lines of the enemy, which promptly exploded and destroyed the train. It's an excellent story of the US submariner's intuition.

@@douglassauvageau7262One of my favorite shows ever produced! Sadly, I wasn't alive when it was aired, as I am only 41, but I have watched every episode available on TH-cam and it saddens me that show hadn't continued. Retired Rear Admiral Thomas M. Dykers, USN, was an excellent host for the show.

There can be no forgetting the nic name, "Lucky Fluckey!"
I wish someone would make the story of the USS Barb into a movie! It's just that good of a story!
As an American, (formally a squid in the US Navy), I want to weep with pride in the men of the Barb and all our service men and women, of WWII... The were the right people, right then, when it mattered most!

@ I don't know... These guys worked outside the box, outside the sub!
Now the basic mission for modern subs is "remain unheard and unseen."
On occasion, some subs have the capability to launch cruise missiles against land based targets, as well as have the capabilities to defend against sea going opponents and targets.
They do have missions to insert SpecOp troops onto land or other missions.
Sometimes they sim,ply "cill," of the coast of another country and "observe and report." Gathering intel with electronics and even satellite data.
Of course, the "Boomers," are there to serve the primary mission of launching nukes, if the situation calls for that.
But, I don't see submariners, leaping into a raft and going inland from the beech to send a train to the moon! LOL!
The basic mission of modern subs have changed over the years, looking nothing like the subs of WWII.
But even with all the modern tech and capabilities of our subfleet today, there is a certain level of... "Tedium...? Boring...?"
It's no big thing to slip beneath the surface today, and remain there for months at a time. But that doesn't sound as exciting as the TV commercials make it. And there's no high adventure, like in the days of the USS Barb and Lucky Fluckey, and his crew!

2:55 If you have ever performed perfectly at a new task you are only just learning, you know how awesome it feels when your teachers look at you with that look that is part surprise, part impressed, and part pride.
Summer of 1985, I'd just gotten my learner's permit when my family decided we should go visit Mt. Saint Helens. We drove up from the SF Bay Area, stayed with my grandparents briefly in Springfield, Or, then continued on up to Washington State. Best of all, I got to do most of the driving.
We had just crossed into Washington, driving along the north bank of the Columbia. It was a beautiful clear, sunny day and a huge number of people were enjoying the river, lots of wind surfers.
I was going at the speed limit when a family, including their dog started to cross the road ahead of me. The humans saw they would not make it, so they stopped in the oncoming lane. The dog though did not. It was right in front of me and it was already too late to stop. With the family standing in the on coming lane I could not swerve that way, and a large motorhome was in the way so I could not go that way.
At the last possible moment the motorhome pulled out of the way and everything went to slow motion. My mind was perfectly clear, and I knew exactly what I had to do. I took my foot off the break, then swerved around the dog. I can still remember the dog's face. I looked into his eyes as we past, and all the dog did was pull it's head back a little.
I steered like an expert back onto the road and continued driving. Time returned to normal and I looked in the mirror, saw the family hug their dog.
I just really hope the family got a leash for that dog.
It was a weird experience. I think it was my first real emergency where driving skills mattered. I had learned what to do, but had not yet faced a real situation where I had do employ that knowledge. I'm glad it was there, or there would have been 1 less stupid dog in the world. And one less ugly Buick. I took care of the Buick a year later being stupid, but that's another story.

But it was the Commander, that made it into a weapon! With a crew dedicated totally to their Captain, their country and one another, the USS Barb was destined to become the boat of heros!

Much of the coastal waters around Japan are so shallow (in areas the average depths are less than 50 feet) that in places a submarine could only operate on the surface. Despite the risks many sub commanders did just that and used their submarines more like PT or gun patrol boats. In deeper waters a submarine could simply escape a successful or failed attack, but when unable to hide and unable to run from most models of enemy escorts these shallow water operations were exceeding dangerous to the crew compared to operations in waters at least 300 (preferably over 400) feet deep.

Next time, let’s hope the time travelers can film the whole mission so whenever someone wants to represent it, they have all the right footage and no one start complaining like little big boys about a weapon!
I sometimes forgot that in USA they pay more attention at what kind of weapons exists!
Thank God I just enjoy watching history and no clue about what kind of weapons was used

I’m wondering, if they picked up any Japanese sailors. How would they house them, in a crowded sub?

    • @WithTwoFlakes
      @WithTwoFlakes 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

They often did. Typically they'd be housed in a torpedo room. Once a couple of fish had been fired, they had room to convert torpedo racks into extra bunk space. A while since I read "Thunder Below" written by Fluckey, but pretty sure they grabbed a dude from a small ship they sank in the Sea of Okhotsk during this patrol.

@@WithTwoFlakes Right, makes sense. They'd be a security risk, with a language barrier.

UDT/SEALS has its roots and heritage in UDT training at Fort Pierce training and S and R training in Little Creek. Independently sending in raiders and setting charge to train track is SEALS stuff. USS Barb was involved in S and R operation as part of Operation Torch. Just don't hear much about their exploits.

Parts of this is as bad as videos about the European theater in 1944-45 showing German tanks rolling into Poland in 1939. Or maybe they did have sets of Marine camo and infantry kit on submarines. And Armalite M-16 rifles. And had time while in Japan to change from camos into ODs and back into camos, along with washing their faces and then reapplying shoe polish. And parts of that night in Japan are very bright. These may be trivial points to some, but to others they are very annoying.
