- Learning saxophone is hard! This week I tried to learn the sax and perform live in front of an audience.
To anyone that reads descriptions: PLEASE tell me your thoughts, I'm experimenting with my style for my videos and it would be incredibly helpful to read your feedback in the comments section!

As a former Alto Sax player, the only thing I could recommend is the essential elements book for Alto Sax
Thank you for the recommendation! I'll check it out!
What I learned off of. Tried n true!
I’m using that book
I use standard of excellence
thats what i use the essentials elements book to play the alto saxophone ive been practicing for a year now and i love it so much that i want to play in a band you sounded great cameron you'll get better
As a flutist recently picked up saxophone, this gives me a lot of motivation but also reminds me that mistakes do happen! This is awesome!!
I love hearing that, thank you for being here!
Hope you are doing well on the sax!
@@Brandenovids1962 Thank you so much! I haven’t been playing much lately but I’m getting there!!!
@@Crookedmothart as a flutist, you should be doing fine on the sax once you learn the embrochure. Once you’ve done that, the alto and tenor sax fingerings are mostly the same as that of the C flute.
Make sure your fr be practicing those long tones helps out well
Hell yea man! I've played saxophone for many years now and while i do agree that the sax is easy to get into, it's incredibly hard to sound good at it. Very good work here.
It really is! Thanks for this comment!
I’m a concert Bb and bass clarinetist who tried tenor sax last year, it’s hard! The fact you pulled off such a consistent and fluent sound is awesome!
I was a violinist who went to clarinet and the alto sax (took me 30 minutes) then to tenor sax the to Bari sax I’m a 6th grader
@@Mayaanneser18 I didn’t believe you at first because it’s rare to see that kind of talent at such a young age, but by your content you’re good for a sixth grader! If I could offer some tips, take some time to work on tightening your embouchure, your sound is a bit airy. Other than that, keep going at it!
FYI, just because you had an easy time migrating between instruments doesn’t mean everyone does, so be careful of your cockiness, you’re gifted, not everyone is.
Ok
Sounded amazing! For the high note, increase your air speed (not the same as amount of air) and maybe try aiming your air a tiny bit more up. Also make sure you’re relaxed.
It's SO MUCH!! Ha, thank you for the tips, I will try that!
@@cameronbrig no problem. Also, nice content!
@@cameronbriganother thing that can help is raising the back of your tongue to your teeth. as if you were saying the letter "E." also think more laser beam air and not so much shotgun air.
@@AJGaming3032it seems like the idea is to increase pressure by making the passageway smaller by using your tongue to narrow the space in your mouth? And I’m thinking to get really low notes to ring out its more like widening the airways so less pressure but more volume of air? I just got a sax today and am trying to wrap my head around it lol
@@The.One.True.B i think of it as kinda making a slide for the air to speed up. one thing for any type of note is never squeeze. that's how you sound gets pitched and squeaks. for low notes drop your jaw as if you were saying "DA"
i just found this video while looking for saxophone for beginners' video and I feel like your content is unique. You deserve more subscriber and more attention
Wow, thank you!
I was thinking the exact same thing! You're content is so good and you are so underrated!
How’s the sax playing going?
As a MS band Alto sax player I have lots of respect for you, and you are absolutely amazing for only spending a week learning.
The storytelling style in the editing made this sooo entertaining, funny and quick!
You narrated and showed as you told.
Plus, it was a super neat challenge idea.
I read your description so just wanted to tell you to keep that up!
Good job man just started playing and have been for a couple weeks now and you’re doing so great in my opinion.
Crazy confidence to perform in 7 days of learning!
Ha, thanks!
I’m a clarinet player learning tenor sax for my jazz band. I would recommend finding a fingering chart somewhere and just take it slow. It really depends on prior experience. The first time I’ve played a tenor was today and I could say I played it better than when you first played an alto. Just taking it slow is the best thing I can recommend
for the longest time, I wanted to pick up Saxo. But I'm not confident, especially since I live in an apartment. But damn, I'm 27 now and I still want to.
Thank you for reminding me why I learnt sax in the first place. To learn something new. Simple as that.
I can tell you have a lot of experience making instruments do exactly what you want them to, and that’s the biggest thing with saxophone. Learning how to sound good is the easy part, it just takes time. Being able to convey feeling and power through your notes is the harder part and what matters most.
Underrated channel!!
This means so much.
Thanks for inspiring me I just bought one and I can’t wait to play it ❤❤🐵😃
I play percussion but always wanted to learn bari sax, might try this myself
I'm a trumpet player who started learning clarinet 2 weeks ago and it's much easier than trumpet but still, so exhausting! And the fingerings are difficult lol. I can pay recorder (similar fingerings to sax) so my temptation to also rent a sax is now through the roof lol
Do it!
Nice progress man. I hope you sticked to it after.
Watch Eddie and the cruisers movies all the time, knew the riff and came to watch the entire video!
As a former sax player alto it is hard to get your first note out but once you do that it’s easy but it’s hard to master it
I just started playing the alto sax in school, I hope I can be as you someday
Ha, nice! Despite my confidence (or stupidity, idk) I still have a looot to learn on the sax
As an alto sax the first day hurt so bad 😂😂😂
Oh yes it did
As a saxophonist i recommend you don't try to play any songs until you're familiar with your scales
Huh no you practice songs for a little while them when you are comfortable with the saxophone you take a little time to learn the scales slowly because rushing scales is stressful
@@Bobimrobthegob1 i agree it's stressful but that's how you learn
why not do both at the same time?
I´m glad i stumbled upon this funny and also inspirational video. Did you continue playing ? Anyways i enjoyed it and you got a new subscriber
Bro why are u so underrated
Saxophone is easy by technicality when you consider what is has, but in actuality it isn’t. Here is googles logic, Saxophone is a wind instrument. But since it isn’t brass and it’s a woodwind, your embouchure will stay the same throughout all ranges including altissimo. So it’s easier technically speaking. But even as a woodwind it’s one of the easiest, because it uses a reed. But even as a reed instrument it’s easier because it’s a single reed instrument not a double reed, yet even as a single reed, it’s the easiest single reed because of the fact that there is no difficulty of covering tone holes, just buttons that do that for you. But that’s an awful way of thinking about it. I don’t think difficulty of instruments is in an order via checklist. As well as google neglecting the fact that all wind instruments are tough to begin on, compared to non wind instruments. I would definitely agree that should an experienced wind player that doesn’t play saxophone pick it up, they would not have as much trouble as a non wind instrument, but that’s just obvious. Another aspect that makes saxophone “easier” is the fact that the saxophone features a wide range of tone variations. Listen to classical saxophone and you’ll realize that there is a clear difference and it almost sounds like a different instrument. As a saxophonist you can make the sound of the instrument whatever you like, and the limitations of sound are lot lesser compared to other instruments. Jazz players let the reed vibrate a lot to produce the sound you hear, while classical players will use their lip to control the speed of the reed to make it sound more like a traditional woodwind. There are even wacky forms of saxophone played where they make use of slap tonguing, multiphonics, and bends to create very interesting music. Duduk style is an example of how there aren’t many limitations with what is possible.
Honestly you sound very good considering you only played for such a short period of time! but one thing that would have probably helped would be tonguing because the notes sounded all together but tonguing separates them and then you’ll have an easier time with counting breathing and phrasing
Glad to see video blowing up after 4 days and almost 100 subscribers
Thank you Daniel!
As a violinist, I was able to get to grade 1 saxophone in a month. But having someone around who already plays is way easier than self teaching imo
That in seven days is amazing. Well done and dis the dis (disregard the disrespectful) !!!!!
I just got a sax today and decided to start off learning 21st Century Schizoid Man. I thought I bit off more than I could chew but the intro riff isn’t too bad!
Sax is fun and challenging, I hope to learn many more songs and start coming up with some of my diddles
yup, I made an apointment at the end of the month, because there wasn't, even the slightest sound coming from the saxophone I was blowing, not even a squawk."
Theirs over 100 notes im a alto player dont play public till your ready and dont buy a sax under 200 or colorful
I actually love this
Ha, thanks!
You did good you just gotta work on your articulation and dynamics if you wanna play those really fast, jazz solo songs
Can you remember me when Your Famous?
great watch
EDDIE & The CRUISERS! 🤘
YEEEESSSSSS!!! So happy you know it
When I first got my sax alto I broke the mouth piece and after a year I could play the music it is easy
As I play saxophone I notice to play a lot of notes I use g a lot
Yea so easy until you have to play 8 notes in a second
So inspiring! Well done 👏
Thank you so much Cory!
curious on how you found the notes for tender years? or did you wing that?
0:58 pardon, but how is bassoon not in S tier!!? 😂😂
As a alto sax player you need to first get a habits of a successful beginner musician alto saxophone the green one
hell yeah
You got this, just need to work on your sound a bit - But i can hear you know music :-). Your channel seem really professional keep cranking your vids out! - subbed
I been playing for 3 years
dope!
thanks!
Dont get the saxophone because you think its easy 1 year in and im still not able to play most songs also the reeds are sooooo expensive
Saxophone is pretty easy ngl I’ve been playing 2 years and I think I’m pretty good
I suggest that you have a little bit of mouth piece/reed in your mouth when trying to hit a high note
Like, have a little bit as in have less of the mouth piece in my mouth? Or are you saying I should have a little bit MORE in my mouth?
Thanks for the comment!
Always put instruments in bags when renovating 🤣
this hurts. THE FINGERING IS SO EASY- WHYY????
What strength of reed did you start with?
Looked like a 1.5 to 2.5
