As a black child of the '60's, my parents raised us on Jimmy Durante, Nat King Cole, Flip Wilson, Ed Sullivan, Red Skelton, Laugh-in, Gentle Ben, Wide world of Disney...etc. Things have surely changed since then... as time goes by.
May God Bless your Mother and Father🙏🏻 We need them today to counter this well designed Hate and division agenda by our States Federal, Government, Schools, Courts, Media and tragically now our churches. All for the purpose of the surrender and dismantling of our constitution and ultimately The former “United” States of America. Unification and freedoms will only be restored by the Grace of Gods Devine intervention and those like your mother and father🙏🏻
Jimmy Durante is WAY before my time (I was born in 1981), but this is the kind of music that I grew up with and have so much love for. My parents (mainly my dad) ALWAYS listened to (and still do) singers like Jimmy Durante, Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Louis Armstrong, etc. My dad had a band when I was growing up that played tons of gigs (mainly weddings) and this is the style of music they played, so it's kind of in my blood. I have a very eclectic taste in music and will listen to just about everything (except for country), but nothing makes me feel more nostalgia than hearing singers like Jimmy Durante. This is true comfort music. One of my all-time favorite movie soundtracks is from Sleepless in Seattle because it is LOADED with these guys.
You are blessed to have such an enlightened appreciation of this era, as well as an open mind to all kinds of music - except country, I'm with you there! I love meaningful, even sad ballads like As Time Goes By and September Song by Jimmy Durante, as well as his heartwarming "Smile" - and just as much I love Ray Charles singing Old Man Time, My God and I, and probably the one that wore my record player out, Old Man River.
He did all the cartoon holiday specials too, as a narrators voice! Brings back a lot of good memories! Frosty the snow man, Tale of Two Cities, Yes Virginia there is a Santa Claus,. and many more.
@@MountTheodore72 They are the Lennon Sisters, a group that performed on the Lawrence Welk Show for many years. They You can see them perform here on TH-cam in/on TV shows, tours, stage, and albums.
On a Valentines night, my wife and I decided to stay home and watch Casablanca and Sleepless in Seattle back to back in Laserdiscs. It just so happen that this song is the perfect connection to these two classic films made fifty years apart.
What a gift this man had - funny, sentimental or sad he could change our mood at a whim. His songs so beautifully intonated to grab every bit of emotion and he did it so well - I never get tired of listening. Memories from my childhood, on our radio with my family - ever more priceless in later years... Thank you so much Anthony.
I’m seventeen, never heard of this man until recently by his track “smile” i felt in love with his kindness, optimism and messages hidden in his music. I’m so happy i recognised his music and i’m so grateful, his songs give me so much comfort i’m gonna cry
Agreed and so beautifully expressed Oliwia. Music is timeless - follow your heart and enjoy what you love, not just what's 'in fashion' today. There's a world of emotion out there to fit every mood throughout your life, thanks to TH-cam. Explore it and Good Luck.
I remember watching this with my parents on Saturday nights all the shows along with Lawrence Welk. This song is golden and should be played forever everywhere. The world needs it.
Thanx so much for sharing this little treasure, Anthony! I used to be in love with Jimmy Durante, (still am!) and would sneak out of bed and hide behind the couch and peep out, so I could watch his show. Mama and Daddy knew I was there, and they let me think I was getting away with it. I used to say, when people asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, that I wanted to be a Durante Girl, and sing and dance with Jimmy Durante, on his tv show. I was 4 at the time. RIP, darling Jimmy, and thanx so very very much, for the magic, music, and memories.
This period in Hollywood is before my own period (born in ‘83), but performer's such as Jimmy Durante, Ed Wynn, Burt Mustin, Red Skelton, writer Rod Serling; just everything you’d find on TCM warms my heart. I prefer this over a lot of today’s work. And this song is right: in an ever changing world a few things will always remain the same to give a person a sense of balance, steadiness in life.
They were such characters back in the day. Now everyone seems a cookie cut out. So many singers sound the same. I feel like if he was around today, he wouldn’t he given a chance.
I feel he wouldn't either and that is terrible. What a feeling this song gives. Way back when, we had numerous radio stations which played all kinds of music. Beatles to Sammy Davis. Now kids don't listen to radio . And they listen to one genre, not getting the variety of performers that we had. Their loss.
I agree completely. He's mainly before my time (born in '57) but it doesn't matter. He's so wonderful and timeless as an entertainer, and a kind, loving man on top of that. How many stars can you say THAT about?! (Not many---at all.)
On a BBC radio broadcast forty years ago I heard of a comment about Durante. No idea who originally said it and it was second hand but I never forgot it. "You could warm your hands on that man". There are such people.
Love this guy's Xmas songs. Hollywood has zero talent these days. Hollywood relies on special effects & auto-tuning, its really pathetic. This guy was Entertaining, period. Love these pretty ladies as well. What a show.
This one aired when I was 7 years old. Those pretty young ladies are much older now. Jimmy was one of my favorites, who died while I was in high school. I'm now past 60 myself. You young people aren't going to like how quickly time goes by.
Heyho Anthony, one of the best entertainers and voices of all time! The final canon of the ladies is fantastic. Thank you for providing it. Greets from Germany and stay well ! ^^
Jimmy Durante is now part of a coal seam formed by time and moderate pressure, and could be mined out and used to make fuels, lubricants, plastics, otc medicines, the red and green dyes used on old anchovy can labels with the woman on them and even red wall tires and tubes with pasta sauce running through them in a red rubber ball italian sunset you name it.

I remember sitting on the floor in front of the black and white TV loving Jimmy Durante. It amused my mom how I would not miss that show!
