Yes, California has a high tax rate. I am from California and have had several businesses there. I wish I lived there now. High taxes never were a problem to me, the bureaucracy was. You are not paying the high taxes in California, unless you are making money. The taxes in Mississippi are much lower, but you don't make money in Mississippi. I once read a hedge fund manager that makes millions per year. He grew up poor and said "I aspire to have a tax problem". The poor don't have a tax problem. A tax problem is a good problem to have. Taxes are not everything. Eating is. You have to have your priorities straight.

As far as I know, Germans pay on average 50 % taxes: sales tax, income tax, taxes on inheritance, gas is so highly taxed that my tax load probably is significantly lower just by not owning a car, ... and while I'm sure that part of it goes into corruption or bloody stupid projects, a lot of it also goes into infrastructure, universal health care, a more or less working public transport system, social security and free college - some of which is paid to people whom I'd probably gladly see falling off the edge of the earth. And it's still worth it. I had a fascinating conversation with a police officer once. His POV was: yes, it's bloody annoying to see men hang around in front of a discounter with their cigarettes and cheap booze and know that they are probably living on tax payers money. *But:* not paying them subsistance level support and leaving them to find their own ways of making money would probably end up being much more expensive because they'd be keeping first police officers busy, then judges and attorneys and other court staff, and then the Strafvollzugssystem AKA prison system. On the other end of "where do my taxes end up" is the free college, which means people hopefully getting a good career and a tax problem to complain about.

Most states like Texas, Oklahoma have low costs , but the minimum wage is still $7.25, unless you got buddies, families in the great job sector, it’s still a struggle to survive, not live but survive, i lived there for 4 years, i had a Studio apartment, my rent was $420.00, but only made $7.25, I was at the poverty guideline., wasn’t eligible for any type of state assistance, i wasn’t poor enough.
I'm Canadian and of course I agree with you. If you are paying taxes you are making money and getting good services. If you can write off this and that, it's because you are making money.

How about the taxes are too low in too many states. These lower corporate taxes are possible because the "taxpayers" (the average people who work their entire life & pay a generous percentage of their income to taxes) subsidize the corporations. The corporations do not then turn around & pass any of those savings to their employees (who are paying the corporate subsidies). Somewhere at some point in time everybody is going to have to pay their fare share or we cannot continue to succeed as a country.

Taxes may be high in California but you get a lot for those taxes better hospitals better schools better roads better Parks better social services if you want to move to Mississippi or Nebraska you're going to get much much much less for your tax dollar
