Per is the best kept secret in the guitar world. His phrasing, note choice, virtuosity and use of melody is elite. The Allan Holdsworth of metal bringing taste and musicality to the genre.
Been a fan since the mid 2000’s when Scar Symmetry first hit, cat’s simply amazing and pretty much everything he plays is what you’d want to hear, every bit of exposure he gets is SO well deserved.
Thanks for this Levi. Per is such a master, I never tire of hearing him play. So musical, articulate and his un-guitar like phrasing never sounds cliche.
Per's work with the prog rock band Kaipa is also great. If you enjoy boundlessly unironic cheeseball prog of the put-flowers-in-your-beard-and-dance-in-the-meadow variety, I can't recommend them highly enough. Despite being completely notes-per-second obsessed when I started playing bass and guitar in my teens, these days, guitar playing like Per's impresses me a great deal more than straight ahead light speed shredding. Per's ascended to another plane of guitar existence that takes a great deal more than a metronome to reach.
Per is surely one of the finest, most lyrical, most 'vocalist-like' of the modern guitar improvisers. Almost every single example of him playing is a wonderful example of playing through changes in a way that is economic in the sense of his choice of notes. There's also an abundance of tiny inflections in his playing that are the technical elements that bring out the soul and the 'feel' of it all. It's an incredible package.
The playing and the ability to tab such an incredible amount of notes and rhythm are equally impressive. Truly stunning in every way. Thank you Levi!!!
Per is such a wonderful player! He rides the line between metal, fusion, rock, etc. But his phrasing is just musical. He knows how build a solo. Great transcription on a great player!
There's something so satisfying about seeing the pinky fully involved, and something unsettling about watching someone always playing only with three fingers.
Nice guitar playing, but that RipX software is amazing! Strange to say, but I have to remember to watch more of the ads on TH-cam music videos because they also are very instructive. You did a great job of showing what that software can do. Back in the '70s and '80s, I used to transcribe speedy guitar solos from vinyl albums by recording to reel-to-reel tape and slowing it to half speed. I had to write everything out by hand. That's so primitive by today's standards.
There's a scene in the middle of the movie Krull where our heroes have to trek tonthe bad guy castle. So they walk. And they walk. And then they walk some more. All this with a score that is less than stellar. I'm not saying don't watch Krull but, when you do, mute the TV and play this during that scene. Now Krull is epic all the way through!
I keep expecting somebody to bust out with the lyrics drawn into the stream of undefined allusion. Ha ha. Love the major minor switch up thing he’s got going on. Super tasty. Magnificent transcription as always dude
Thanks Levi for last night Stream. As you said, your can hear things that you can't play. For me that's the opposite, I can play things that I can't hear. Now I understand why I'm a bad musician and a bad guitarist.
Although Holdsworth appreciated many guitar players, notably once commented that he liked Gambale's note choices. he rejected the stale, physical contraints of historical guitar and routinely listed keyboard and horn players as those who influenced him most. His humorous concept of his own playing was simply, "juggling notes."
He is the guitarist for my favorite band. Check out the multiple solos from Technocalyptic Cybergeddon by Scar Symmetry, and it's some of Per's best work.
A little less funky, but the progression is essentially Something About You by Level 42. Great for this sort of melodic shred phrasing. Feels like an outro 😜
@Levi Clay rubato or free-rhythm is one thing in a solo and these are common but have you noticed any guitarists who play a lot of riffs that are melodic but at the same time deliberate and controlled polyrhythmic phrases against the drum signature?
Don't know why, but that exact cord progression always such music to my ears and makes me feel like I could pick up my little Honda Civic and throw it like superman! 😂
That software ripx looks awesome.. gonna have to try that on some of my existing transcriptions and see if it sheds new light on anything I had a hard time working out.. particularly with chords
regarding RipX (sorry I know nothing about this topic so maybe stupid question) does this (or other tool) allow conversion of guitar pitches (i.e. 8:55) into tabs automatically? I see the keyboard over to the left ... wouldn't it be cool if you told it how many strings / what tuning and it gave you suggested fingerings? You could shift positions (lower strings higher on fretboard) to generate the tabs extremely quickly
no - you wouldn't want it to do that because it wouldn't be accurate. While the software is picking up pitch information, it picks up EVERYTHING, harmonic overtones, background noise, resonance etc. So you need to know what then instrument is and what isn't, but when you get to turning it into tab, there's too much experience required. Knowing where something is played. Check out my video on AI transcriptions.
The way he plays, it’s almost like sone notes are transitory, and you don’t get the full expression of what he’s actually playing in one note but three or four
Great playing and great transcription. Unfortunately it's a few levels up from my ability! If I could make a request, I would LOVE to see a transcription of this playing by Per Nilsson, it absolutely blows my mind! One of my fave guitar solos ever. PER NILSSON improvises picklessly over NILI BROSH's "A Matter of Perception" th-cam.com/video/VbZ27N9L3GQ/w-d-xo.html
I really like Per's playing over Holdsworth's "Atavachron". Would you be interested in having a crack at it some time? Thx th-cam.com/video/pc2NKayD0H0/w-d-xo.html
I understand that these click bait titles are most likely helpful for TH-camrs, but good lord, they do such a disservice to the players you feature. The titles set the expectations so high for those of us that have heard hundreds of guitarists that play like this. Then it’s a disservice to the viewers who have to fight to lower our expectations and just enjoy someone for what they do.
Which one of us has the experience in this area? I'll tell you what does the artist a disservice. Titling the video they way you would and it getting 500 views. Oddly, the only people who find a video titled "Per Nilsson Guitar solo".... are people who already know who Per is. You know what it doesn't get? 10k views in a day.
@@LeviClay here’s the experience I have: I’ve only played in small bands that have been lucky to sell 1,000 albums and have had the opportunity to open a few show with audiences of between 1,000 and 5,000 people where the bands I was in were not what the audience was expecting and we sold zero albums except a couple rare occasions of selling 2 or 3 albums. In other instances I have played shows to 30 or 40 people where we were what they were expecting, basing expectations on the type of bands billed, and we sold 10-20 albums to that small crowd. So the number of people reached doesn’t exactly mean you automatically win over more people. You know, decades ago Pearl Jam took Zeke on tour with them and they were not at all the type of band Pearl Jam fans would be expecting and Zeke still plays the small shows they always have. The point I’m trying to make here is that I don’t have to be a TH-camr to understand that hyping things up and getting butts in seats or more viewers or more clicks can seem like a great thing in the moment, but often the long term payoff isn’t great.
@@LeviClay well there it is. I said in my initial comment that it was most likely beneficial to you. 🤦🏻♂️maybe if you can learn to step back and take constructive criticism you could find a way to keep making that good living off your content and at the same time not hype people up in a way where they just won’t be able to live up to the outlandish expectations you’re putting on them via your video titles. Then the viewers you get may actually feel impressed and go check out what the people you’re making a living off of do as well.
Man! You're doing a fantastic job as always! I´m constantly going back to him with "PER NILSSON improvises picklessly over NILI BROSH's "A Matter of Perception" th-cam.com/video/VbZ27N9L3GQ/w-d-xo.html

Per Nillson with a very specific set of skills. Skills that make it a nightmare for transcribers like Levi.
he also loves writing in a way that is impossible to learn for regular three notes per string players.
But if Levi doesn’t, he will look for him, he will find him, and he will make him transcribe.

Love the nuance of him playing with his fingers the first half of the solo. Then he grabs the pick and digs in and just gets it
Respect to him for playing this, more respect for you for transcribing it.......just wow !!!
First I've heard of him, that was truly amazing and beautiful.
