      Because,the times,when Manto was writing,was very painful,and that pain hasn't subsided.
The classes, the humanist ideals, the egalitarianism and human equality which Manto wanted, still couldn't prevail.
And its thus very painful for sensitive people, like Manto.

I have honour to see a great true writer Man to.
I use to see him every day. Since I started reading his short stories at the age of Thirteen.
My parents never restrict me. I use to read his books like a Religeous material.
We had X-Ry clinic on Beadon Road Lahore Pakistan in sixties.
He use to sit a Watchrepair shop a old typewriter in front wearing glasses a white starched Lukhnavi style Kashmiris face.
Pakistan did not valued him and he suffered financial and other mental difficulties.

This is what Manto said about Bombay and this is a direct quote:
"Four and a half years ago when I bade farewell to my other home, Bombay, I felt the way I feel today. I was sad at leaving a city where I had spent the hardest, the happiest and the most memorable times of my life. The strip of land, which is Bombay, had taken me, a footloose young man, rejected by his family, into its vast lap and said to me, “You can be happy here on two paise a day or on hundreds of thousands of rupees. You can also be the world’s most miserable person, regardless of what you earn. It will be entirely up to you. Here you can do what you like; no one will speak ill of you. No matter how difficult things become, you will have to deal with them yourself. You and you alone will take every important decision of your life, without interference or help. If you so choose, you may sleep on the street; or it is possible you may find yourself living in a palace…” I stayed in Bombay for 12 years. And what I am, I am because of those years. Today, I find myself living in Pakistan. It is possible that tomorrow, I may go to live elsewhere. But wherever I go, I will be what Bombay made me. Wherever I live, I will carry Bombay with me. When I left Bombay, I was sad at leaving it. That was where I had formed the most lasting friendships of my life, friendships of which I am proud. That was where I had got married, where my first child was born, where my second child began the first day of her life. There were times in Bombay when I did not have enough to eat; and there were times when I was making vast sums of money and living it up. That was the city I loved. That is the city I still love."

  • @pdopp236

    Manto,was Muntu,like One Two,first.
This was narrated by Munir Niazi in 1999,in Pak Tea House,Lahore in presence of Muntu's all three daughters.
Secondly Muntu,or call him Manto was a dedicated humanist, and that humanism came from his very radical political upbringing.
So he was not only a writer or an artist.
The viewers who haven't thoroughly read Manto or the other literature writers and the politics of those times, should keep this perspective in mind, while watching the movie.
Thirdly, those who know and understand Manto better, know,he was more bitter, more loud, more angry, than maybe Nawaz has depicted.
I think Nandita or others will make another bold and representative movies on Manto in future.
Manto,as an individual,as a writer, and as a political idealogue and activist, which he actually was, needs many many representations like this, because it was not Manto alone,it was the whole period of activism, struggle, and fearless expression.
So the credit,of saying truth, goes to that period and its such movements which vied for forging human equality.
The progressive writers of those days and later,Manto's comrades, his mentors, all need to be represented, for instance Krishan Chander,a short story writer and novelist as good and truthful as Manto.
My last comment currently is,the era of Manto, and his alikes hasn't ended, because societies haven't changed.
So Mantoiyat, which Nandita uses,is still alive, and its not only about Manto, its about all of those who somehow or another reflected the plight of the miserables, and wanted to change this very oppressive and uneven world.
    Salam Manto !

Enjoyed this presentation. I admire Nandita Das for doing her research on Manto and undertaking the difficult project. Nawazuddin Siddiqui is a great actor and he will do a good job of portraying Manto. The pictures of Manto that I am familiar with do not look anything like Nawaz. Manto was quite fair, had a longish face and unruly hair. If the essence of Manto's art comes through the movie, it will be a success for me. Look forward to seeing it.

Manto was, ethnically a kashmiri, proud of his kashmiri roots. In a letter to Pandit Nehru he had mentioned that being beautiful was the send meaning of being kashmiri. In the same letter he shows his disapproval of Bakshi, one who was illegally installed as the head of j & k by then Nehru government through rigged election. Now when the whole world talk about truth, freedom, justice, woman rights, definitely for which Manto struggled for and stand for, are wanting and waiting in Kashmir. We need another Manto in Kashmir who can write about predicament of kashmiris where each voice against oppression is torn out of it's throat.

Wah! Nandita Ji ki Urdu ...amazing! - It is hard to find an Indian speaking good Urdu these days. Mostly we hear a crippled kind of Urdu from that side. More and more Indians must make an effort to speak good Urdu as it was originated in India anyways.
