  • Updates: Bangor Daily News interviews Old Town's new Director of Economic and Community Development, E.J. Roach, on Old Town's shifting identity, as well as new challenges. Worth a read! bangordailynews.com/2020/11/2...
Background: In 2018, four students worked closely with Harvard Kennedy School’s Jorrit de Jong and Ash Center’s Cecily Tyler to pilot a unique course and explore the video essay as an integrative tool in field-based and design-oriented classes. This video essay, Story of Old Town, is one of those four projects. The film uses Community Narrative theory to introduce viewers to the people of Old Town, Maine, an historic city that was once the logging capital of the world and was Henry David Thoreau's jumping-off point to explore the North Maine Woods, and is now working to reimagine its identity. Filmed on an iPhone6 and iPhone 7 from November 2018 to April 2019 at various locations in Old Town, Maine, as well as Orono, Maine, Boston and Cambridge, Massachusetts. Many thanks to the people who appear in the film for agreeing to be interviewed for this project: David Mahan, Scott Wilcox, Erin St. Peter, Stan Peterson, Connie Carter, Rachel Sullivan, and Aiden. Thanks as well to Old Town Police and Fire, the Penobscot Times, Old Town Museum, and Operation Breaking Stereotypes; and to the Harvard Libraries, especially Paul Worster and Clayton Scoble at Lamont Multimedia Lab, Susan Berstler at Cabot Media Studios, Kristen Koob at Harvard Kennedy School, and Emily Coolidge Toker and Jessica Cohen-Tanugi at Lamont. Drone footage courtesy of Travis Roy, Old Town, Maine. See you at Riverfest!

Thanks for the walk down memory lane. "The mill" was not the first to leave but the last. My grandfather retired from the pie plate factory. With only social security for his retirement. He was the inventor of a lot of the specialized equipment n the mill. The federal government was encouraging business to go over seas thru tax breaks. Needless to say they did from pie plates, wool shops, to shoes. I think the federal gov outsourced our jobs and the big industries owners who sit the seats in Congress did defeat the unions.

If only they had filmed that about 5 or so years beforehand (may have been longer, it's been a while), when Herbert Gray was still standing. So many other aspects of OT that weren't mentioned, but hey, maybe a part 2 or something.

Rewatching this...some thoughts. Has the 'last big community' been sliding down from Presque Isle to Millinocket to Lincoln to Old Town?
Saldy...All this talk of the future is moot until the region gets better high speed internet I'm afraid. It doesn't help the insular-ness of the community and can be heard daily on 103.9...edit: speaking of which at 14:38 he's telling on himself lol. If he wants a thriving down town he needs to opt in to recreational cannabis. Boomers hold the whole place back.
And I meant what I said when I mentioned being inspired earlier. David Pingree made his fortune shipping slaves & cotton and his land base still generates revenue for his descendants today....wheels turning

Old Town maybe nice but please do not say anything about the school system, it failed me terribly. The common joke is I'm from olt town I don't do math

I think it depends on the individual. For me, I was two years ahead of the average with most of my class. I moved to Alaska where the high school system is much much worse.
