After playing for over 40 years I still wonder how much better we drummers would become if we simply had the will power to NOT compare ourselves to other drummers. It's even harder today when we're being inundated by so many amazing drumming videos here on TH-cam. But being able to replace comparing ourselves to them with being inspired by them instead is a major yet attainable goal. Thanks, Rob. ❤
Ive been playing 46 yrs almost non stop and the info that you give in this lesson is as important to me as it is to a beginner. Thanks
That last bit of advice is certainly the most helpful in my opinion: don’t compare yourself to others. If I’ve learned anything in my now 5 year drumming journey, is that self-doubt is a progress killer. Thanks again Rob for your insight. Watching your videos always inspires me!
This WILL be the year I either develop 4 way coordination or I'll hang em up! I bought a kit late Aug. of 23'. I basically work so much I don't have the time or energy for lessons so I just try to do all I can when I can, through TH-cam... Tryna stay positive this year and not get down on myself!... Here we gooo!.
The struggle is real!! Learning at 12yo the brain absorbs and learns at a much greater clip! I'm 50 and that 4 way coordination is a massive struggle, wish someone had the fix, I haven't found a drill that works or makes me confident there is a quicker way to do so...
Man don’t hang them up, this stuff takes time. Thousands upon thousands of hours practicing. I understand work gets in the way, so you can’t knock yourself for learning something slower than someone who is fortunate enough to spend 5-6 hours a day behind the kit. Just keep pushing and you’ll get there!
@@eliboyd6551exactly 💯
You can only lose if you quit brother. NEVER, EVER, EVER QUIT!!!
@@vikingwarrior4966gary chester- new breed book, thats the solution
I got back into drums last year after a 12 year hiatus and found your channel. For 12 months, every day, I've done one of your hand workouts on a practice pad (swiss triplet, doubles, 6 stroke) and the progress I've made is immense, a true game changer. I am so much more agile around the kit now. It also speaks to your point about repetition. Focus on developing practical things over and over and over rather than trying to learn 40 rudiments. Thanks for all good, practical advice you give, you're a great instructor.
Great advice. I've only been playing for a couple months. I almost gave up a couple of weeks. I'd learn something and as soon as I could barely play it I'd move on to something new. I was starting to get overwhelmed. Then one day I went back to playing a simple beat and fill over and over again. I started having fun again after that
@@lobbyrobby It’s so true what he says about muscle memory. Once you can play something adequately, don’t move on, that’s the time to then drill it down into your DNA. He has a 20 minute triplet workout and at the start of the video he said if you do this 3-4 times a week for a year you’ll have the best hands in the game. It took me a full two months before I could do it at his tempo, then I did it for 10 more months, same with 6 stroke roll. Now those are deeply engrained and make learning other things so much easier because the foundation is there.
We need a “Beatdown” practice pad.
That ain’t a bad idea 🤔 lol
@@RobBeatdownBrown I’d buy it. I like a LOT of drummers, but I find your particular brand of instruction to be open-minded and yet, clear. I love your playing and you’re one of my ALL TIME favorites.
A "Beatdown" practice pad would be cool. Great idea!
@@RobBeatdownBrown Make it one of those quiet ones, and larger than the remo silentstroke ones. My wife will have you know there's a market for that
Playing along to music no matter what your level no matter how bad it may sound in the beginning is really great advice from a real great instructor. Thanks Rob
Don't compare yourself to others. So true. There will always be someone " better " than yourself, so as Rob says, practice , work hard, stay motivated, and be the best version of you that you can be.
one musician I worked with, he once told me, "no matter how good at what you do/play, there will always be someone better than you"
awesome video! always practice along with your videos, greetings from British Columbia
Rob ....always keeping it simple, from tuning drums to practicing, you are the best my friend! I have been playing for over 30 years, I learned by myself exactly the way you are teaching but I didn't have you back then. We are lucky to have you!
Rob, you are my drum teacher. Your videos have improved my playing technically but they’ve also improved my confidence! I’ve been playing off/on for 18 years; I’m back on and better than ever because of you. I love this instrument and I’ll never leave it.
I have a “procrastination” proof set up: music stand, practice pad, metronome and a chair in my living room facing the TV. I practice while watching Bob Burgers. Then in my bedroom, I have my new Roland V-drums set-up with a TV monitor. I’ll sit behind that and play along with your videos, and other YT drummers, and play along with my Spotify playlist. These tips are real and they work.
I practice 5/6 days a week, I give myself rest days just like with exercise. Sometimes I’ll only have time to practice for 5 minutes on a given day, but I make sure I’m behind my practice pad at the very least.
All this to say, THANK YOU Rob. Thank you so much! ✨
Bob's Burgers. That's some quality time, right there! 🏆
Man thank you. That was what I needed. I’ve been wanting to play drums since I can remember. I played trumpet, guitar, bass ( in many bands for many years). And always, always wanted to play the drums. My wife recently asked me to put the kit away as we needed room in the basement for other things. I knew if I stacked it, I would never practice. So I rearranged the whole basement to keep that kit playable. So glad I found you. For some reason you inspire me to just get to it and enjoy playing. Can’t wait to see where this journey goes. I’m in my 50’s and looking forward to becoming the drummer I’ve always wanted to be. Thank you for all your videos and inspiration. Means everything.
Spot on. I wish this technology was around in late 80s, but it's never too late to learn. Kids, listen to Beat Down. He's legit. Probably the best educator on TH-cam.
Not comparing yourself to others is something I've struggled with the last few weeks. I'm getting out of it now & it has been making me think of starting a new channel for Musicians Mindsets. Pitfalls we all have like comparing ourselves, why we do it, why we shouldn't & how to get out of it. So maybe it was a good thing it happened!
Great advice, being a drummer who plays by ear and let's face it, musicians are a touchy bunch, very critical of themselves and how they play. I've learned that there will always be someone better that you, don't get bummed, just do your best
Been Playing 60 Years .Still Play every day . Thank You For the Video
Thanks man. Best Drumming channel on youtube without the nonsense.
Yeah I'm a bounce back drummer it's like riding a bike once you learn the fundamentals you really never forget I'm doing ok I think to be 55 yrs. later I'm even playing a little with a childhood guitarist it's really fun thanks to you I've improved more keep on keeping on
What really got me about this video was the fact that you had something to sell and you mentioned other people’s stuff first. That’s a real one ☝️
Rob, I can't thank you enough for your awesome lessons.. you have made marked change in my playing and opened doors I didn't know existed.. for decades I avoided the practice pad.. now I'm never without it..THANKS!!!!
You're not only a great musician, but also a great teacher! Thank you so much for the tips and for encouraging many of us that are still learning.
Thanx Rob, there's one thing I always seem to have (or take away) after watching one of your videos is Confidence. Your
positivity is a breath of fresh air in todays world, so thank you for doing what you do. Bless you and yours, I'll keep in time
right with you Brother, peace.
I’m 33, work long days and last year I had one of the longest breaks from playing drums than I’ve ever had. However, I recently came up with a 20-20-20 rule. 20 minutes doing a quick basic work out and stretching, 20 minutes on the practice pad (my main 4 are singles, doubles, paraddidles and six stroke) and 20 minutes on the kit. During my lunch at work I figure out what I want to practice on the kit so I’m ready to go with those 20 mins. I had been thinking I wouldn’t improve anymore unless I had 3 hours a day to spend playing, but even with just the 40 mins between the pad and the kit, I’ve been improving. I really enjoyed your video and will work to incorporate your suggestions!
That last one is the best but also the hardest!! Wise words dude... 🤘
You, sir, are a master at teaching. You have a great gift, positively, and energy that everyone feels watching your videos! God bless! Such a motivator!!
I love Rob's lessons. I've been playing drums for 50 years, but his videos always teach me something to practice and upgrade my skills.
Thank you Rob, great motivation! At 64 it is time to get serious! Got to get out and see more bands play, no excuses in Nashville.
Thank you so much! I enjoy your no-nonsense approach to teaching. I am a beginner, and the one thing I'm hesitant to do, but that I know I NEED to do, is record myself. You have inspired me to just suck it up and do it.
"Don't compare yourself to others" is the absolute best advice from this video. I've been drumming for just over 1 year and had a buddy over to play that's been playing for 25 years. After he left I didn't touch my drums for 2 months. I had to buy a new kit to motivate myself to get back on em.
I’m self taught, and to be honest, is just an ok drummer. But I don’t get discouraged when I see someone better than me. I always get inspired. We all have our own journey. Glad you got back into. If it makes you happy, keep playing.
@stixxnstonerz3450 i agree. Everyone has their own path. Just gotta have tunnel vision at times and stay focused. Outside forces can really be distracting and even disheartening
Rob, I truly appreciate you and your encouragement of drummers as a whole. I've been playing on and off for 45+ years and in all that time I have had many seasons of playing. Some seasons were frequent and intense, other times my drums have sat piled in the corner for longer than I would like to admit. I think your tips are excellent and I like the point of not comparing yourself to others the most. It's tough when you're the long time drummer and some kid can smoke you on some new style or syncopation. Thanks for encouraging me and thanks for keeping it real and not getting all caught up in yourself. You always bring content worth my time and I for one appreciate that.
Compare and despair. Yes Sir.
Can't stress the importance of getting a practice pad. It's the cheapeast and most valuable thing to do.
I was an OK/medicore drummer for years, did gigs and recordings in bands...but finally getting a practice pad (+ a metronome app on my phone :-) was game changing.
I don't have a drumkit at home, so it might happen that there's sometimes a week or more that I don't get to sit behind a real kit. That sucks, but it doesn't matter much, cause I'm using that damn pad at home everyday and once I get to finally play music, I'm ready to go from the beginning.
And for the fun: play with as many other people as possible. Ideally people who play on a higher level and/or different styles of music than you listen to.
Keep track of how long you're practicing each skill. I log my time in 15 min chunks on a piece of paper. It's very rewarding to see the hours you've dedicated, and useful to see what needs more time.
What I have found is that you simply need to log time. Thousands of repetitions on the pad, kit, lots of rehearsals and gigs with bands, and definitely record yourself a lot to course correct. Playing live, you do need to be in the right mindset, not compare yourself to others, doubt yourself, simply enjoy what you can do right now.
I use TH-cam all the time prime and organize. I use I pad to scan all my books and jump to each one and record myself
Love your channel and content, great advice on this video especially on the comparison trap! Keep up the good work!
I just want to say thank you. Your channel, your videos, your positive energy has been so incredibly helpful!
I bought myself a Ludwig Classic maple 7 piece for Christmas, burgundy pearl!
Nice. Congrats! 🎉
I bet it's a beautiful looking set and can only imagine how cool it must sound, congrads!
Thank you, Rob. These are great tips. I will never tire of hearing your last tip: Don't compare yourself to others. The advice is so wise, productive and essential. And timely. No 30 minutes ago I was watching a video of amazing drummer (Sheila E.) and I was struck with the thoughts that I'll never be able to do what she's doing. It really stalled me out. Listening to you just now helped me get my head on straight. Now, I'm going to go practice. Thank you, Todd Berg
Was surprised to hear that even you compared yourself to others an even felt somewhat discouraged, I know there are many people on social media playing drums doing all kinds of fancy impressive things, but in a band setting no one comes close to you not because of what you do but how you do it. One of your videos your playing a live show with the band and you played the drums with such a natural feel to a song itself i didn't really like but you made it sound great in fact you made the drums sound like a rhythm instrument instead of a percussion instrument traits you only see with legendary drummers imho.
I sit with my practice pad and a metronome while I mindlessly watch TH-cam videos! haha
I started learning drums 2 weeks ago, and found your channel during that time. In just 2 weeks I've learned to paradiddle at 160 bpm. I only have a practice pad, not a kit yet. I'm excited to watch more of your videos and get better.
You nailed it on the head these are things I’m already doing haven’t played in a long time started playing in last March and you are so right
These are great tips! I spend most of my practice time playing to songs on a playlist I made and recording video of it with my phone. It can be hard to not get frustrated that I'm not playing every note perfectly or just not even getting close. This is kind of just comparing myself to the original drummer, but I think if you focus on the most obvious differences and try to attack those weak spots from big to small, it can be very effective. I just have to know when I've bitten off more than I can chew and come back to it later. Thanks for the advice!
Brilliant as always. Thank you Rob. 👍
I enjoy the pep talk . Thanks Rob
You always say what I need to hear, often stuff that I already know but I need a reminder and it came at a great time, thank you
Hi Rob- Great practice tips. You’re one of my favorites. You captured what I need perfectly. I’m 63, and just got back into drumming after a long hiatus. These tips are very helpful. I do play with other musicians, and play to drumless tracks, but you are so correct, developing hand and foot technique is huge. I fell victim to comparing myself to other drummers. Very good advice to avoid that. Thanks for all you do for the drumming community.
Love it!! It's encouraging for me that I'm doing it right and realizing not to compare myself to others. Thank you brother. Grace and peace to you and your family always. C
Rob,
You are an endless source of inspiration and I am so grateful. I’ll be passing this video along to some kiddo drummers I know to get them started on the right foot, or hand(s) this year. If I’m ever in Vancouver I’d love to buy you a coffee, or cocktail. Have a great year. 🙏🏼🤘🏼
Your advice and delivery is top notch! Thanks Rob! Hope to see you with the Classic Troubadours show in Perth this summer!
Rob, wise words man, you have inspired me already. I feel energised to create more MAXIMUM THUMPIFICATION!!!!
I watch you videos often for encouragement. I thank you from the bottom of my bass drum. My drumming has really improved over the last 18 months.
All the best and keeping on grooving 😁👌🏽🥁✌🏽
All great tips, but number 5 knocks it out of the park!!!
Took me a good while to get over it
Inspiring guidance 👍🏻
Thank you!!!
Thank you i needed too hear that last one
Comparing yourself to others! Love it,
Very inspiring!thanks my guy!🔥🔥🔥
I've been watching your videos for about a year. As a 45 year old drummer who has been playing since the age of 17. I feel like I have improved more by using your methods this past year. Than I have in several years. Thanks for the content!
11:33 Great tips/advice Rob!!
Thanks bud! Excited for the year ahead!
Thanks for the pep talk Rob
Thank you for the excellent lesson.

Hi Rob, love your channel, big fan!. Thanks for all the useful tips. Best regards from Mexico City!
I'm one year into playing the drums and played with a musician for the first time last week. It was such a huge confidence booster and I realized that my drumming was way more intuitive and tighter than I gave myself credit for. Thanks again for all the advice, Professor Rob! I'm feeling fired up for a year of progress.
Thanks for the awesome advice and lessons Rob. Thoroughly enjoyed this, and I’ll be taking your advice to make 2024 the year to step my game up. Thanks for the inspiration brother 🥁👍🏻
