I can understand why people say this makes them dizzy or makes their ears bleed, but I find this far from annoying, this is stunningly beautiful, so different from what I grew up with
It’s so nostalgic, I’d usually hear my grandpa singing or listening to it. Really sad that he have passed away, I wanted to learn so much more about my own culture and language.
Rest in peace to your grandpa but I’m so jealous of your stunning culture and language it makes me so upset the mine isn’t as interesting and unique :(
My elderly father does not have much to say and so I play these Cantonese operas whenever I visit him. It’s brings back his childhood memories and encourages him to talk about his life in Hong Kong 60 years ago.
My second favorite Chinese opera performance, right behind The Monkey King. I love the guy playing the protagonist; that entrance at 1:50:27 is so good. Great eyes, great movement, great voice.
@Keyboard Emperor thank you so much. it's such a beautiful performance already not understanding the language, and knowing the full context makes it so much better!
When i was in junior high school (13, now 34), i really love this kind of chinesse culture. I just heard it from radio. I'm from Gorontalo (Sulawesi island)-Indonesia, as long as i focused to listen my chinesse opera, i almost can't hear it at all. But, today, thankyou for uploaded this on youtube. I knew, this is problem for some people who heard this sound every single day. But, i listen this every single nite side by side with my grandma, i miss that moment.
Very beautiful and artists are professional I love Chinese opera the Chinese influence is great on my life praise to the people Chinese civilization is great high culture you honor me and others thank you
in the first 11 minutes, you get a bunch of servants bickering, princess comes and angsts about how her fiance died in the war, gets pissed off at the appearance of a mandarin duck (a species known for monogamously mating for life, symbolizing eternal love), and so shoots it down. the king comes by, and finds out what happened, decides to summon a bunch of eligible bachelors so the princess can pick a new husband.
up to 45 minute mark //Suitors come to gain favour through the princess's head servant, including with bribes. She dismisses them one by one, deeming the one with the beard to be too old (he's 51), so he recommends his own son (dude in pink), who isn't personally willing, as he wishes to make a name via his own merits, so she encourages him to work hard in his tertiary studies. The general (dude in green) confesses that he ditches his wife and child to show how serious he is about the princess. She orders that he be beaten for being heartless family-value-fail scum. The servants scoff at everyone they've seen so far. end scene.
up to 1 hour 25 mins // 2 pheasants are introduced, princess and entourage bump into them literally, scaring off their mule. The head servant and the dude bicker and insult each other. The princess gives him a large sum of money to compensate for the loss of his mule. But then she finds out that the lady is engaged to the kindhearted government official from earlier, and so tries to buy her off so she'll break off the engagement. She refuses, and her companion throws the money back in the princess's face. // The lady accuses her fiance to have forgotten about her, kind hearted man denies it. the wife who got kicked out comes by to claim her baby and plead her case. kind hearted man summons the general to his court to berate and threaten him. The general grovels, agrees to take his family back, and his ex-ex-wife commands him to go home, take care of his son and change his diapers. ex-ex-wife and kind-hearted-man's fiance engage in female-bonding over allegedly similar fates of being betrayed by men.
Hahah love this. I love it, my annoying neighbor not so much. So whenever they started to make loud noises and be annoying , I’d play these as loud as possible. LMAO Then they would shut it. 😂😂😂
Funny, that is EXACTLY why I looked this up. Drunken neighbors getting a cheap skinful at home until 10 pm, then hitting the nightclubs, returning at 3 am to play loud music an general drunken guffaws etc. I thought it would be well worth buying an amp and sending this over the fence at 3 am on a workday. I heard only 4 or 5 bars and I still think that!
I can see why people call it annoying because the female voices are SOO high pitched, but to be honest I barely noticed it after I started watching it because its really so beautiful, the costumes, set, makeup its so amazing
Me ha gustado mucho como se expresan . Sus vestidos muy llamativos y coloridos así como la música muy alegre. Admiro mucho la cultura China. Saludos de un ecuatoriano.
I don’t know why people find this annoying. It’s not surprising that one of the most ancient and isolated civilizations in human history would produce an art form which is an acquired taste.
Wtf did you just said to my culture you call it annoying if you can't respect our culture then don't expect that we are going to respect your culture 🙄
42:50 The general divorced his wife and children because he wanted to marry the princess. The maid is calling him scum. 人(human) 渣(scum/dregs/trash/residue) XD
@Richard Zimmerman I absolutely agree that the dude got his due. Though my comment was not at all intended to be a complaint about the maid. I merely wanted to interpret this scene because I found it funny (watching the maid roast that general that is) and wanted to share it with fellow viewers who might not be as fluent with reading the Chinese subtitles.
哇哇, reminds me of when I was a kid my grandma would sit there watching it all the time :0 Does seem nostalgic. But still not very pleasant to the ear lmao. Still great 😔👌
The music fits the language perfectly. There is still a lot that I don't understand about the story, but it helps to know that the young nobleman (who is addressed as 大人) is actually married to the woman who appears, towards the middle of the play, riding a horse; he doesn't want to be unfaithful to her, and so he resists the advances of the young princess, who has lost her own husband.
Does anyone know the significance of the big sleeves? The are constantly playing and dancing with the sleeves of their gowns and doing intricate little movements with them. It's very intriguing.
