People seem to want to know the meaning behind The Weather Machine. So, here goes. It's about the way Western politicians use crises in the Middle East as an excuse to sell weapons. After the Arab spring sprung in Tunisia, various dictators around North Africa and the Middle East were looking at their own populations, worried that they might rise up in revolution. David Cameron, never one to miss an opportunity, flew to Cairo (supposedly to "promote democracy") with eight British businessmen - 'defence contractors', a.k.a. arms manufacturers. We were tooling up paranoid dictators. Our biggest customer was Colonel Gaddafi of Libya. And he was right to tool, up I guess, because a few weeks later, the Libyan people did rise up in revolution. And Cameron, with no apparent sense of irony, sent British troops, to defend the people of Libya, from Gadaffi's men and their shiny brand new British weapons. The revolution won, Gadaffi was overthrown. Cameron went to Tripoli and gave a speech to the assembled masses, and was hailed as a hero, for helping them. It's so sick, it's almost funny. I like to play this song as loud as possible in the vain hope that wherever they are, these grim reapers like Blair, Cameron, Putin, Berlusconi and Bush can hear it, and a little shiver runs down their spine. Or whatever they have in place of a spine. Rant ends. th-cam.com/video/Kph8r0Rh6M8/w-d-xo.html
Never heard of Jon Gomm before tonight. Five songs later, and I gotta say both vision and talent are at unmeasurable levels. Monstrously brilliant. You came in out of nowhere with the sun, like a Spitfire and blew the place apart.
Imagine Jon on a contract with a Record Label and the director would be like "What you have in your mind Jon, a 8:30 song with 2 minutes of intro with crazy lyrics, we're not realeasing that, but as it's written in our contract you can't realease by yourself since you showed it to us, thx bye" Then they would make a postmortem release and some of us would never listen to this masterpiece. Thank you Jon for choosing the harder path for the delight of our ears 😄
You are absolutely one of the most unique writers and performers who have ever lived. So much undeniable soul. This song is like feeling the middle of the Earth in your chest. So bad ASS. I LOVE YOU JON!
I love this song so much. Those heavy strums on the main riff are so aggressive yet playful; they bump so hard. I could go on about this song for hours.
Jon I love the different direction you have taken with this piece! The aggressive playing mixed with emotional, meaningful and thought provoking lyrics makes this one of your best pieces.
I really dig that song!!! I dig that it has this great Zeppelin-esque feel to it. I dig that there's some serious shredding going on. I dig that it has a message (veiled by metaphor but still - a message! a political message!). It's almost too good to be true. Thank you, Jon.
Mario Unterköfler Yea, i can see the Zeppelin influence, but i would say more Tea Party-esque sound rings true to my ears, could easily see Jeff Martin playing this. And referencing the weather machine to mean "political climates", well that is what i hear....so not entirely sure, but if that was the idea then well done man. Either way, great song
***** Well, IMHO the metaphor is quite dense, so many people sure read their own meaning into it... (if they don't notice your explications above, that is). I saw some funny interpretations popping up already... but that's what makes it even more interesting!
I really love the slower tempo on Gloria and especially on this damn cool song. The sound is HUGE, you did a great work with your old material! Jon, you are the magic man!
Jon, I got the chance to see you at the Theatre du Petit Champlain (Sept. 22th, 2015), along with Don Ross. You guys are really virtuosos. Even this excellent vid doesn't do justice to the surrealistic ambiance you create around your music. Thumbs up!
it’s difficult not to say “he’s one of the best musicians on the planet. the percussive originality on every song. he has so many techniques mastered.. tha dood bends notes w the tuning keys 1/2 up to 2 steps and puts em right back in tune after he bends the note. i also have a theory that his is the first born Son of the Great Octopus in the Sky.
What was it like when the wellspring opened and you communed with ancient spirits? Prophetic, utter freedom of the mind. You are an inspiration to everyone, everywhere that believes vibration is the highest of spiritual callings. The High Priest. Thank you for this wonderful gift.
Hey Jon, this is amazing! I think that my favourite thing about your music is that I don't like all of it, you don't seem afraid to try something new, and you don't seem willing to compromise your art to resonate with the masses. Your music makes me braver as an artist! I think this has overtaken Passionflower as my favourite Jon Gomm song!
Each and every one of your songs are a new work of art for me, your expressiveness in your unique way of playing is so heartfelt and it truly pulls on the strings of emotion. I am simply amazed that you can keep this up consistently, thank you for gracing us with this music. Also, your humility I see in the comments is so pure and outstanding, I am just blown away.
Dear Jon, I've been waiting you since 2011, you're one of the few latest musicians (artist or genius) that made me still believe in the power of music. I'm begging you: please come to Italy! :)
OMG... It's impossible dislike this music. I think it's my favourite, because you put your real opinion in the lyric. Really good job, syr! I'm brazilian and I really like all your musics.
Yay! More please! ;) So much anticipation for next month ... And so much practicing to be done - Thank you as always for the constant inspiration/drive
Asia tour starts next week. I'm packing my thermal sunglasses.
Great song again! I especially appreciate how you describe the meaning of the song in the description. And you're not afraid to play AND sing. A real musician tells a story through music.
"but to me being a songwriter is sometimes about more than painting pretty pictures" word man, word!! also totally dig the message behind it, and of course your playing and singing is sublime!
Great Jon, after your explanation about the title and the lyric I could understand your energy and passion in singing: from my side I heard your song loud sharing your message!
I love this style of music and it has a really bluesy feel too it. the percussive finger style aspect is amazing and Its great. whenever i play acoustic, i love to learn it. thanks for being my inspiration!
Thought it as a tad odd when I first heard it, and I was a bit disappointed it was a lyrical song since so far I've been a bigger fan of your purely instrumental stuff. Saying that, I've listened at least ten times since and I love it, seems for me it was just something I had to listen to more and more to like it more. Good job, Jon!
I love you Jon. Your art fills my heart with joy and inspiration. You and Wilma have the rather unique ability to make the trees of my imagination to flower and bear fruit. I would never have conceived my contribution to earth were it not for this. we're it not for you.
I was wondering what kind of melody can work with such chords and boom you struck me with the most unexpected melody yet an amazing one and the chorus is stunning. Thank you Jon for your sublime talent and music from a man coming from the middle east!
Superb...fantastic performance...mix of Arabic funk, grunge, rock with a vocal that reminds me of George Michael! Perfect combination and quite a pioneering vibe...
all of your songs are utter masterpieces! every last one of them. I definitely agree with how you feel about musicianship. it's more of a personal art than it is a display for people to inevitability enjoy. this is the beauty of music. nobody has to like it for it to still mean something very important. keep up the amazing work!
...this whimsical gypsy ride takes us above the clouds and in our minds to a time keepers tour of tricks. it's certainly worth the band at this point John. why not get old and give the band and big crowd concerts a shot! I'm seeing lighting and massive projector imagery art along with full band. base player might be able to be subbed for pedals or keys. but you need the drummer and big crashes that only a drummer can bring! best of luck, this was awesome!!! love the lyrics lately
You're good man.. you're good :) and you deserve to feel so uplifted and high after playing such piece of sweet music to the ears. I've been listening to your songs for a while now, but my all time fave is Passion flower.. the first time I heard, and saw you :) I make every person passionate about music and guitar listen to that song .. and I feel joy when I see they feel joy listening to you. Cool job on the tats too ;) Love from Malta x
I love that some songs had different speeds in the videos. Like for instance in my opinion this song sounds way better slower like this. It's more powerful, but like having both faster and slower versions is super cool
You are amazing, always beyond words for me! Also gotta say you sound very similar to Danny Elfman (tone of voice) when he was fronting Oingo Boingo, which is awesome :-)

+Jon Gomm Shut up and drum/strum that thing.
+Morgan_Fucking_Freeman Not your call to make pal
mtayala I know, it was a joke. A really shitty joke.
+Morgan_Fucking_Freeman My apologies
+Jon Gomm Plus 7/7 and 9/11 were inside jobs!!! You're the man, good to hear you speaking... and singing out!
Never heard of Jon Gomm before tonight. Five songs later, and I gotta say both vision and talent are at unmeasurable levels. Monstrously brilliant. You came in out of nowhere with the sun, like a Spitfire and blew the place apart.
I HAPPILY AND AMAZEDLY CONCUR!
One more display of absolute freedom, thank you Jon!
I love this comment. :)

The intro reminded me a lot of Ewan Dobson :D I love this song Jon!
+Eddie van der Meer
Same, Its the baseline that is so similar...
Yeah. Something from Blood and ice
Yet the end does such complement the intro. Well done Jon Gomm.
You are absolutely one of the most unique writers and performers who have ever lived. So much undeniable soul. This song is like feeling the middle of the Earth in your chest. So bad ASS. I LOVE YOU JON!

Tom Watts Thank you.
Creativity at it's finest. Not a bad word can be said about you Sir! Thank you for making such inspiring and beautiful music all these years!
I completely missed any political message, metaphorical or otherwise because the guitar playing was so awesome!
I really dig that song!!! I dig that it has this great Zeppelin-esque feel to it. I dig that there's some serious shredding going on. I dig that it has a message (veiled by metaphor but still - a message! a political message!). It's almost too good to be true. Thank you, Jon.
Yes, definitely some big Led Zep vibes inside this tune. Glad the message is getting through the layers of metaphor too.
Mario Unterköfler Yea, i can see the Zeppelin influence, but i would say more Tea Party-esque sound rings true to my ears, could easily see Jeff Martin playing this.

@@jongomm I get a lot of David Bowie from it... story telling in music form done perfectly.
I really love the slower tempo on Gloria and especially on this damn cool song. The sound is HUGE, you did a great work with your old material! Jon, you are the magic man!
I picture this as music in some kind of epic platforming game. A level with lots of rain and mountains or something.
Jon, I got the chance to see you at the Theatre du Petit Champlain (Sept. 22th, 2015), along with Don Ross. You guys are really virtuosos. Even this excellent vid doesn't do justice to the surrealistic ambiance you create around your music. Thumbs up!

This is like an acoustic tool song. I dig it
