As an Asian American, I don’t see any issue with BTS being a part of the conversation because anti-Asian hate isn’t just exclusive to the U.S.. They have faced major prejudices, racism, micro aggressions, everywhere including the U.S., so their experiences are valid and have weight in this topic. In my own experiences, the aggressors often do not care that I was born here. My face is Asian and that is enough to categorize me as “other”. Having BTS and other Asian faces being visible in the media, having this representation, is so huge. Bringing BTS into the White House was a smart move.

I don't think you understand the impact of their visit to the White House, and how momentous of an occasion it is for them to be invited and speak on these very real issues, as they are Asian artists. They have spoken at the UN multiple times, so the White House was the next step and they are the voice for many Asians who continue to be discriminated against. Antis like you will never fully appreciate the impact of BTS, who I know that NCT probably also admires. And don't disrespect RM, as he did a wonderful job.

I'll tell you a story. The mall next to where I work has a small store (lotto, snacks, etc) run by Asians. During the pandemic when things were slowly opening up the people running the store started getting hate and physical attacks. The store then closed down again despite most of the other stores being open. They did finally reopen a few months ago. I was personally happy to see them open again. This isn't much of a story but this is the part I've been leading up to. I went in there about a month ago and one of the 2 gentlemen working had a dry cough. I thought about what had happened in the past and could tell that this poor man was trying to hold in his cough - not just because whenever you cough nowadays people think covid but also because being Asian it brings about another level of fear and attacks from others. I looked at him and commented that he had a dry cough and to go ahead and cough all he wants because the more you try to suppress it the worse it gets. He did his coughing, I didn't say horrible things to him, and we proceeded to have a brief conversation while I bought the things I went in there for. Since then both gentlemen seem very happy to see me whenever I come in and we always have pleasant conversations every time.
I know it is not much of a story but no matter who you are dealing with or what race they may be - try to treat others the way you would like to be treated. A little empathy goes a long way. I say empathy because I myself developed a persistent cough before the pandemic began and know what it is like when you have to cough knowing that other people around you are suddenly going to go into panic mode. The scarier part for them was being a Asian with a cough considering the hate and attacks they got just for being Asian.

I totally get this. I am Asian. I take care of my brother-in-law, who is challenged. Well, when he wears the mask, he coughs. When we went to the store, beyond getting stares, I was always worried that someone might attack him if he coughs.

@@lizsays3324 The thing that sucks is that because according to the census bureau, “Asians” are clumped up into this huge monolith ranging from Indians, Pakistani, Korean, Chinese etc.” The “highest earning are Asian” actually comes from a huge outliers in income from Indian Americans. Filipino Americans as well, because we import alot of nurses and their wages are high.
But then you have for example, Burmese Americans who are some of the poorest group in the U.S. income wise. Korean Americans for example, do not earn more than whites. The whole “Asians earn more than whites” comes from extremely skewed data.
This is problematic when groups like Burmese Americans are for example, viewed as successful and don’t need help because they are Asian.
Its why I personally don’t like using the word Asian to denote people from that continent. Not because I think its politically wrong or anything, but its just a really inaccurate insanely generalized category.
To sum it up, the “Asians earn more than whites” actually come from only 3 subgroups or so which are Indian Americans (by a FAR margin, like an extreme outlier of over 100k average a year), Filipino and Chinese Americans.
Many Asian Americans do not earn more than whites, and MANY earn below the poverty line.

Notice that most people talk about "addressing racism" while BTS talks about uniting people. This is very important. It's not possible to 'fix racism', but it IS possible to unite people in a way that transcends racism and transforms those people with racist tendencies. BTS understands this and that is why they take the approach that they do.

What I wish people who were complaining about their spotlight on AANHPI would understand is:
BTS have been fighting for *everyone's* rights for years.
Their UNICEF campaign to stop violence against youth, their support of Black Lives Matter, their vocal challenges about abuses of power, etc. Yesterday they just were taking the opportunity, during a time set aside for people of their particular demographic, to speak on yet another important topic.
High tides raise all ships. BTS is an ocean of change. We should stop trying to drain something that benefits us all.

When I first got to know about BTS, 4 years ago, one of the dominating traits I noticed about them was their positive nature. We live in a time where humanity is content with destroying itself, crazy to think that a loud few outnumber us who just want peace and safety. With their messages of promoting self awareness and acceptance they really are creating a foundation of hope. With the power of ARMY and the spreading of positivity and love they really can make huge difference in this world. It doesn't have to be politicians as world leaders. ARMY is diverse and spans the globe, BTS can be world leaders just by touching hearts and encouraging people to make progress.

Second, I'm a caucasian U.S. citizen, non-Asian, and I am super proud of BTS for becoming the stars they are AND for using their influence to speak about such important causes. Although they are not U.S. citizens, they themselves have been discriminated against IN the U.S. to the point of death threats where they had to cancel or shut down concerts. So, in my mind, they have every right to talk about discrimination against Asians, including Asian-Americans, here in the U.S. You've likely seen the videos on BTS Hardships, so I won't go any further on some of the things they've been through. I have such great admiration for these young men. Music as Jungkook said is also a huge unifier when connecting people , I remember being a part of the 600 million who tuned in for the Nelson Mandela tribute and opposition of apartheid in 1988, at that time artists used their platform to reach so many. BTS have 90+ million ARMY and those 90+ million people know people who know people etc. This is how things can spread and make positive changes to the world around us. Unfortunately there is always backlash, negatives, and just downright refusals of any changes being needed. I love BTS's music but it was them as people and their core values that made me an ARMY.
I believe they would not have taken any questions because this was not about themselves as a group(which is what I imagine most of the questions would have been about), but about an increasing problem which has been growing across the globe in the past few years. As Ambassadors they probably would feel very bad if the focus was taken away from something they feel strongly against and are fighting to end. Just the fact that the people there had to be told repeatedly to put down their cameras and focus on what was being said, was a little off putting but the guys handled it well. As a long time ARMY I was very proud of them and hope that just the attention on this will get more people talking and having conversations on things that need to be changed.

@Beards,Booze,Bands,&BS Thank you for react to this really important moment for BTS. I am not S. Korean. I am of Greek immigrant parents. I live in Canada, a country who praises itself in being a multicultural tapestry, where everyone from all cultures and religions can freely be themselves. And yet, I and my parents have endured racism and hate because we're not of anglo background and English is not our first language. I'm not considered a "visible minority" and I'm not considered "white" or "caucasian". My people are considered "invisible". We are less than 0.007% of the population in Canada (there's only approx. 270,000 of us here - a true minority). It's unfortunate that even we are treated like 5th class citizens, even after my heritage gave the world many of it's foundations. I hope and wish for the day when societies around the world realize we are more similar than different and learn to appreciate the beauty of our unique cultures --> that is strength, that is progress, that is when we (humanity) can move forward and evolve and "racism" becomes a term of some forgotten past.
I applaud our BTS brothers for continuing to stand up, speak out and in their native language! Bravo! It gives hope to ALL of us who experience racism and hate!

Really appreciate that you went beyond just reacting but gave your perspective and converse with us regarding what it means for BTS to be there and their significance in the industry not just with their music but with what they advocate about.

BTS actually gives press conferences every time a new album is released and have been put on the spot to reply to some really difficult questions and they do a very good job of being diplomatic, being careful what they say, and punting back to the company handling specific issues/topics. They would probably have been fine answering some questions, but probably didn't have time in the itinerary.

When they released Permission to Dance one of BTS' label mates compared their path to Michael Jackson’s. Taehyun, one of the members of the band TXT, was asked about the song. After saying he of course listened to the song and liked it, he added "if you look back at Michael Jackson’s path, such as the themes in the songs his songs, as time passed, he used themes that are like public service advertisements and not personal, like world peace, earth, the environment, and children. I think our sunbaenims (BTS) are doing that as well."
This is a similar view to what you mention about The Beatles and U2

Also I remember hearing that President Biden also wanted BTS to speak about these issues because he knows how much people respect them and will listen to their messages and take it to heart. As you said earlier they are helping make many changes to help people think about various different issues that they have openly spoken about.

Oh, I hope you feel better soon, Kyle! Your stuffed pillow version was iconic, ngl.
BTS did very well in their speech and the comments just highlight why this was so important. Honestly, we need more acceptance and people speaking about those issues and the fact that BTS always use their platform to talk about what is important is a huge deal. As said by Biden, it matters. Instead of pointing fingers, it would be great if people actually took time to understand why they were chosen and the message they are spreading. But even with all the negative, the majority is positive and praising and proud of them for helping spread the tolerance message and to shine a light on the matter.
I am very proud and hopeful that more people would follow the example and try to do better for everyone.

It’s too bad people don’t recognize that the US is proud to talk about the influence the US has around the the world, but quick to criticize when people from other countries do the same. I don’t think I am wording this right but the US isn’t the center of the world and we should be interested and happy when people from around the world show up for us. When people go out of their way to try to undermine the perception of a cause, it belittles the cause. It’s like saying Asian hate crimes aren’t important enough to have the attention instead of saying “How can I help?”

I never like to comment on videos, I’m mainly the type of person that watches videos, like, and subscribe. Today watching your video reacting to the speech is the second time today I’ve seen the video. I am not Asian, but I am West Indian. I am nothing less than proud and happy because they were able to meet with the President and to speak about hate in general (not going to label it because no matter where it’s pointed towards, hate is hate). These 7 guys, amazing and humble are changing the world. Keeping the promises they make and have made in the past, to there fans (Army), makes me believe that one day the world will change. Helps me keep hope that everyone will one day set aside there differences and value each other as people who live and share the same world we live in. Army(a family that I’ve come to grow attach to) is world wide breaking the boundaries of race, gender, ethnicity, and language with the help of BTS who have the platform where they can bring together people from all around the world to relate to one another and to show everyone we’re not all so different. I thank you Corey and Kyle for taking time out of your days to make reactions to BTS and not just their music but also speech’s and other contents. It means a lot 💜💜💜💜 “you nice, keep going” 💜💜💜💜
