I'm weird I guess no matter how well I know/use my daily ratchet... to this day before I stick it to the fastener I always grab the socket and twist just to make sure I'm in the orientation I need. STILL even 10 years later.

Thank you for your review. I am also new to the flex head ratchets. I would of bought them years ago but my flex breaker bars complained that they would be out of a job, so I didn't buy any. Now, I own: 88 tooth 18" Armstrong 1/2 flex ratchet, Armstrong 10" flex 3/8 36 tooth, and a NAPA 1/2 standard length 36 tooth flex head ratchet. All are USA made. I still use the breaker bar to loosen up the nuts to prevent breaking the gears. I just feel that the 36 teeth ratchets are more durable. So far, I have not run into a circumstance where a 72 tooth ratchet would get in more easily. I have run into situations such as needing a small arc because of tight space but in all of those times, it was for either an 8mm or 10mm nut/bolt. I would just put the appropriate gearwrench flex head wrench on and take it off. It was better to use a flex head wrench even if I had a flex head ratchet. Wrench is lower profile, takes up less space, and doesnt have a 'ratchet head' to get in the way.

Maybe zip ties. Anything beyond that is a crap shoot with all the stores these days. Striped screw heads have been a huge problem for me lately. All 8 valve cover screws striped striped on my kohler mower. 1 screw striped on polaris carburetor. Constantly working on or in the shop with all my stihl equipment.

Take one of your old ratchet heads apart and take the new one part and compare the internals. The thickness of the ratcheting gear on the new style is over twice as wide as the old ones. With that said you should be able to put a lot more torque on your new style wrench without breaking the gears. We have all put a pipe over the end of the ratchet handle when the tool wasn't designed to take that much force and subsequentially damaged the ratchet. I think this thicker, heavier wrench just might be built to take a little extra punishment that we sometimes use. Look at the internals and don't judge the book by the cover.

I found them at an ace and got the short 3/8th flex - the price worked on that one, but not the rest. If the half was a bit shorter I would have got it, but an icon or some other fake nice ratchet is better for that spot. Would have got a quarter inch if they had them in flex head. I'm willing to make some sacrafices for a cheaper but still chunky flex head.
Interestingly, the quarter inch is about 24.50, and the quarter inch set with sockets up to 14mm is about 25.99.
One serious problem is no detent to hold the switch in one position - I don't care which way is which, I have many styles of ratchets with many styles of switches, I can figure out how to switch it, I always test it anyway, to make sure the pawl's fully set - sucks to have your ratchet neutral out on you in a tight spot, or to have it look locked but slip off and hurt you, especially on one of these detent-less cheapies.
They've got very nice feeling teeth, but they have a lot of take-up, so the 72 tooth really functions in about a 32 tooth space.
It's a very unfinished tool. it's pretty beefy but lacking all the nice little touches that make you keep grabbing it.

  • @andrestnt
    @andrestnt 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

It's this supposed to be a review? I feel like you should first use and test the tool before making a judment. Other then the thick heads, the chrome looks good. I like the design of the handle. The selector thing is not even a issue, I always check my ratchets before use. The price is high probably due to tarrifs. SBD is keeping their word, they just announced a new mechanics tool plant in TX, it's going to be interesting. Price will probably increase again.

I looked at Craftsman and bought Tekton ratchets at a fraction of Craftsman prices. One of five new stubby flex head 3/8" Craftsmans off the rack at F & F last week didn't hold to finger pressure. It was defective from the get go. Maybe some quality control would be a good idea? I've seen Amazon reviews where this happens with other China and Taiwan made ratchets like Gearwrench and Tekton but the Craftsman is much more expensive.

I thi k the price may reflect "quality" if you want to call it that. If they have been built to tight tolerances and decent forging of the ratcheting mechanism, that is probably what is reflected by the price. Looks like were going to have to put these to the test to see if they hold up pretty well.

Years ago I helped my dad work on his truck and he has nothing but the old USA made Craftsman and nowadays it's all China. I started out with some Kobalt tools which imo are better than the China CM but when it comes to quality at a good price it's hard to beat my Gearwrench 120XP flex heads and non-flex ratchets. Had them for a long time and never had an issue. My tools are mostly Gearwrench and Tekton with some Kobalt leftovers.

I dont like the indexable feature in the head. Which is just a ball detent that locks it into place requiring more force to articulate the angle. I like them for locking flex heads but for a regular flex head I prefer no detent on the head. A high end snap on ratchet is just held in by friction it feels a lot nicer.

I looked around quite a while for a flex-head (locking) 3/8" with at least an 11" handle. Light duty, don't need snap-off or Carlyle. Settled on the Stanley extendable (to 14") sold at Wal Mart for $23. Much nicer than the Husky I looked at. Wanted quick release and choice of lock/nolock on the flex. Feels like a 72-tooth design. Here's the hack to buying the new, chonky, over-priced, Taiwan-made CRAFTSMAN -- take an old ratchet into LOWE'S and find the youngest, DGAF'est, female Employee at the Customer Service Desk on a weekday evening and tell them you want to exchange it for a new ratchet.
If they don't do a direct swap, usually they will credit you for a basic ratchet and you just pay the difference.
I think I got the 3/8" drive, fully polished, flex head for less than 10 bucks after trading in an absolutely shitty 'Craftsman INDUSTRIAL' ratchet I got in a set from an old job.
Did the same thing with a really poor quality (but USA-made) 1/4" drive ratchet from one of those dinky sets you get from your Uncle on Christmas when you're old enough to drive but they still gotta get you a present....we've all got a few of those laying around.
May as well leverage that warranty and get a 72-tooth, polished ratchet with a flex head instead of just letting that ratchet you're never actually every gonna use again take up space in your drawer and collect dust(rust).

Hahaha! Waaay overpriced. I would never buy one of those. I'll stick to my old school Craftsman ratchets. For the cost of those new ones you could get a better brand, USA made.

Nobody's going to pay the price for this Craftsman ratchets especially if they're made in China or Japan remember they're not American-made.

These ratchets are over priced for what they are. I honetsly think the Pittsburgh ratchets and hart ratchets from walmarts are WAY better than these craftsman. Which isn't saying much.. have a newer craftsman 3/8 that I bought last fall that I have already warrantied 4 times. One time I snapped the teeth inside from changing one spark plug.
