it's one of my favourite scenes but when I rewatch it, I can't stop thinking about how traumatising for Cait it must be. She's there on her knees, manages an attempt of an attack, but gets stabbed, goes down again and is basically about to be executed, hears Maddie from behind reloading the gun, hears it firing, you can see her closing her eyes, then for a second nothing happens and then Maddie drops ON HER. You can hear Cait groaning at the realisation. Like this is nightmare material for years.
I don't consider this a betrayal by Mel. She never pretended to be on board with her mother's plan, she made it clear this whole time she was opposed to this invasion and would not support it. There was no moment where she pretended to be anything or went against her words, she simply stood up to her warlord mother trying to trample over her and her city.
As unpopular as it might be, that was such a good move on Ambessa's part. Plot and main-characters-need-to-stay-alive aside, I feel like she kinda deserved the win. I felt a bit frustrated when the powers that be had to intervine and kill Maddie last second. I do understand it, as I don't think her character had much else to offer to the story beyond this point. It was a grand revelation that gave a whole new meaning to her entire presence in the show. Still what a great plan, Ambessa isn't just skilled at the battlefield, but also at psychological warfare. She weaponized Cait' stressful position and need for some sort of personal connection to spy and get and agent on her. On top of that, Maddie had some impressive cold blood play her role the whole time and even take the shot towards the end without hesitation. Her line about appreciating their relationship feels so disturbing in a way, to be able to enjoy the intimacy with someone you're betraying and to have the will to shoot without hesitation feels almost inhumane. I'd like to know more about her character, I feel like that final line alone gives her a lot of personality, but I doubt that even if Arcane got its 4 full seasons she would have been developed. After all, what works so well is her cover as spy and the fact that we never get to know her until the very end, the point where she also has to die.
The music when Ambessa appears really sells this scene for me.
Yep. It really hammers home the tragedy of brutality triumphing over civility.
What song is it please

In the dark frame of the minute 1:43 you can see how they show us that Maddie enjoyed the betrayal
Simply arcane
