The Legend of Mount Sleeping Indian: Luba, who they called “Flor del Aire”, or “Air Flower,” was the daughter of Urraca, the most successful Chief in Panama fighting against the Conquistadores. It was her misfortune to fall in love with one of the Spanish soldiers. Yavari, one of the strongest fighters of her tribe, vied for her affection. When she did not return his love, he jumped to his death from a mountain top before the Princess’ eyes in despair. In sorrow, Princess Flor del Aire left her home and never saw the Spaniard again. She crossed mountains and valleys bitterly weeping over her fate. Above the beaches of the Caribbean, she fell dead looking back at the beloved mountains where she had been born. This sad love story so touched the mountains they decided to form the shape of the Princess, and that is how the India Dormida arose.

Very nicely done. Looks as if the trail is beautifully maintained. Do you encounter dangerous wildlife, including spiders, snakes, and scorpions? What precautions do you recommend?

    • @AlienTM24

Hello, Brenda! Thanks for your comment! 😃 Yes, Panama has poisonous snakes (the fer-de-lance is the most dangerous), tarantulas, and scorpions. But finding them takes a lot of work. I have spoken to several expats who have been living in Panama for several years. Only one saw snakes on his coffee farm during all this time, but they were not poisonous. One lady saw a scorpion. By this, I mean that there are no more of them in Panama than in any other place, for example, in Florida. When you will walk along the hiking trail, just look under your feet to avoid stepping on some creatures. They will be visible on the rocks (we didn't meet anything dangerous). Mosquitoes and midges didn't bother us in the rainforest, as I feared. The biggest predator in the jungles is the jaguar, but it is almost impossible to meet, and they don't attack humans in the wild. In this area, a type of insect called chitras (sandflies) was unpleasant for us. They can bite up to the knees, and your legs will itch for a long time. They bite us not in the rainforest (perhaps we needed to use bug spray when we sat on the patio after sunset, but we forgot), but I recommend wearing long pants for hiking. Also, on this trail, there are sections with large stones. During the rainy season, they become slippery. During this period, it is better to go to the trail in the morning before the afternoon rain.
