  • "I came to UCI in 1973 as a freshman from Los Angeles. My attendance was in large part due to my oldest brother, Dr. William Parham, and some other high school friends who had also preceded my arrival. Prior to enrolling and during my senior yr. of high school I had periodically come down to hang out for the weekend with family and friends. I knew I wanted to be at UCI. Once here I was active in the campus life becoming involved with the Sierra Project my first year, was a member of the track team, and met Dr. Joseph White. Following his guidance, I became an R.A. my second year and was elected Vice President of Administrative Affairs in the ASUCI student government, my third year. I was also actively engaged with the BSU and a founding member of the Cross Cultural Center.
The 70's was a different time and UCI was a different place. It provided unique opportunities geared toward building community; principles and values that have helped shape my character and that I still live by today. One of my fondest memories is the ""Soul Food Picnic"" the BSU hosted in 1974, (I think). We invited CSULB, USC and San Diego State up to join us. We hosted intramural sports activities, had a picnic in Aldrige Park, where the BSU did all of the cooking, and culminated the event with a concert featuring Kool and the Gang in Crawford Hall.
I am grateful to Dr. Joseph White and Dr. John Whiteley, who were instrumental in my success. The lessons I've learned and the relationships I still have with friends from ""back in the day"", are treasures to be sure. Ones I will cherish and forever be grateful for."
