This was probably the best-looking series collection (in terms of packaging at least) of TNG. It was also one of, if not the very first, DVD set of its kind. Television shows weren't really collected in this manner before this. At best you would have to buy individual VHS tapes for each season (which I had the first two seasons of), or there was the old Collector's Edition VHS, with two episodes per tape, that you had to subscribe to Columbia House to get. Then they would mail them to you, one a month. After these DVD collections came out and did well, every show started having season collections.
I remember my sister and I getting season one for our Moms birthday, because she was telling us how good this series was. After that, we got at least one season a month. Good memories 😍
You're going to love this... Okay, here goes: The silver box sets were not quite the first release of tng dvds, but pretty close -- it was the first time a whole season was issued. The numbers were production codes, and episodes that started with a 7 (like 721) were the ones that were able to be two-part or the whole "TV movie". Every season was put together in show "air order" and not production order, that's why the numbers are out of order in the early seasons. Each started with 4 episodes per disc to maximize the dvd disc without suffering the video quality... (4 episodes at 45 minutes = about 3 hours). The last disc would then get "filled up" with special features. Each season at release was around $100. When the show was remastered in HD, the entire series could be had on blu-ray for $100. Each season had something for "paper" inside, and a paper on the outside as well -- it covered the back and wrapped under the bottom to come up just a little in the front. It was also usually not only for advertising, but to hide a bonus disc unique for each season. The menus were distinct per season, but the ones that were truly different were only when trying to access "the best of both worlds" episodes. It's a shame that the re-issues were just the same at the time of the blu-ray remastered...
Fascinating info! I remember happening upon the Season 1 silver box sealed with the extra disk inside. I passed on it since Season 1 isn't my favorite, but I'd like to see those extra disks. I get more into the DVD menus in my review of the rereleased DVDs from 2020. I was impressed with them, but suspected the disks were reprints. This set confirmed they were, but I still love the menus and the care taken in designing them. I'm just disappointed that the new disks are only reprints: even a remastering would have been great.
@@JanelleWaz the bonus discs were truly unique in that not all were dvds! Each disc came in a cardboard sleeve, and season 1 and 2 were actually cd-roms! S1 - companion (a series guide and script library, complete with the trailer ads for each episode) S2 - the interactive technical manual S3 - 2 audio books in mp3 format S4 - 2 bonus features (21 minutes) S5 - 2 bonus features (29 minutes) S6 - 2 bonus features (31 minutes) S7 - 2 bonus features (27 minutes) All 8 bonus features were then included on the blu-ray remastered set, as well as the trailer ads.
Ahhh... These are the ones I have. Minus Season 1. One of the boxes, however, is falling apart. The glue has dried out or flaked or something. You lift it up and it looks like someone had very very bad dandruff.
I believe the numbers above each episode are the production number (aka order they were made). I have this entire set on my shelf and I will admit the picture quality isn't awesome compared to the BluRay remaster. I'm shocked that later released haven't gone to the upgraded BluRay version given that they invested a good bit in it.
Thanks for the info! That makes a lot of sense that it's production number. That was the biggest disappointment of the later release: I'm not expecting Blu-Ray quality since they're still DVDs, but even just touching up the colors would have satisfied me. At least it would have shown some effort.
I owned the complete series and gifted them to a friend. The ship shots looked weird. I now have the Blu-Rays and they look just great. However, the packaging for these DVD sets is outstanding!
3:16 THIS! Such a pain to get out. I thought I was doing something wrong. I have to stand it up or actually flip it upside down. Or that is what I was doing. Then opening the CDs on a flat surface, as it feels like an accordion. I personally do not like it that way. Also I believe I mentioned elsewhere, that one of the seasons, the glue disintegrated and looks like dandruff in the box. And when you mess with the CDs, the "dust" can come out. That can't be good.
Both the ease of removal and lack or lose discs are a result of higher quality packaging. I've owned all seven seasons since originally released, and the disc holders were always that solid. (IIRC, only 1 or 2 of the 48 discs become dislodged during shipping from the online retailer.)
Yup, and my parents would bitch at me for soending MY money on bluray sets. Like dude, you were paying $50-100 a SEASON, I'm getting multiple ENTIRE series in the same set for a little over $150 on a superior format. Seriously, physical media is DIRT cheap now.
I bought the TNG 2002 dvd sets like 7 or more years ago. But I transferred them to my computer which also helps with my star trek research and video development. At least I now know not to get the new version.
The new version is passable if that's the only copy you can get: I did a video review on it if you're interested. However the 2002 DVD set is definitely the better collection.
Question. On season 2 disk 3 The Royal, at 13.13, is there a "blip" or grey thin tall rectangle that appears on the screen? Maybe some dots that line the interior of the edges of where the film meets the darkness? It's not there all the time, but I have noticed it previously from time to time.
I just started the process of trying to decide which version of TNG full serious to buy. This was very helpful!
Glad to help! I'd definitely recommend the silver boxes over the rereleased set if you have the shelf space.

I got the season one box back in the day then traded it in to Hastings I think. Those things were spendy new, which is why i only bought one season.

I’m super surprised the 2020 set wasn’t the remasters just in standard. Picture quality would have improved

A lot better than the bluray set, at least in terms of packaging.

I personally never noticed the glue flaking off in my copies. It wouldn't shock me if I ran across it, though.

I'll recommend taking a look at my review of the 2020 TNG DVD set. The packaging was pretty terrible. I was greatly impressed with the silver box set.
700+ dollar gift. I remember buying all of these. they weren't cheap
Were they $100 a piece when they were first released? Wow.
My friend bought these used, so she wouldn't have paid that much.

I have the silver box set. Got the ds9 series set but got a custom cd case for those
I've heard the DS9 sets don't have the greatest cases. I should pick up a season and review it.

0:22 I bought the blu ray remaster that just came out and it has the same messy case😂 I very quickly gave up and bought a bunch of jewel cases
I bought a CD wallet. I didn't need a heart attack every time I pried a DVD out of the case. 😆

I'll have to check.
Okay, finally checked. Yes: I do see a gray rectangle at the edge if the screen.
@@JanelleWaz happens often enough, that it shouldn't be there... Maybe due to newer TVs or wider screens... 🤔
@@tilasole3252 That would be my guess as well. I imagine it's been fixed for the remaster.
I had this set. Sadly, it died in a fire at my storage while I was moving. 😐
Ma'am i love the video in general but you say the word "dvd" like a million times in the first 5 minutes of the video alone.
Well, nobody's perfect. 😆
