If I recall, this video was made to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the introduction of Fortran. So, this video dates from 1982.

As a programmer, I have to pay my respect to these men and women, because had it not been for them, we wouldn’t have any of these high level languages today that really have advanced computers to where they are today. Without Fortran, I don’t think there would’ve been a C language (and B before it), and there most definitely would not have been C++, Python, Java, JavaScript, or any other high level language that we use today. These people are pioneers, and deserve to be honored as pioneers in the computer industry. I actually have thought of learning Fortran myself as a little fun side language that I can play around with.

The odd diversity of outfits worn is by far the best part of this video.

My late father was a Fortran programmer on IBM mainframes from 1963. I may even have the original language manuals somewhere.

I first learned FORTRAN IV back in 1973. Used FORTRAN 77 for my dissertation in 2016.

@@vulcanhammerinfo The Payroll programme my late father helped write for the UK Atomic Energy Authority in Fortran back in 1963 was still in use when he retired in 1981. 👍

This felt like a documentary made for an audience who already know a bit about Fortran and the difference between machine code and high level programming languages.

99% of programmers today (are actually scripters) don't know what is machine code.
